U.S. extends embassy closings, lawmakers say threat serious

By Tabassum Zakaria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States extended embassy closures by a week in the Middle East and Africa as a precaution on Sunday after an al Qaeda threat that U.S. lawmakers said was the most serious in years.

The State Department said 19 U.S. embassies and consulates would be closed through Saturday "out of an abundance of caution" and that a number of them would have been closed anyway for most of the week due to the Eid celebration at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The United States initially closed 21 U.S. diplomatic posts for the day on Sunday. Some of those will reopen on Monday, including Kabul, Baghdad and Algiers.

Four new diplomatic posts - in Madagascar, Burundi, Rwanda and Mauritius - were added to the closure list for the week.

Last week, the State Department issued a worldwide travel alert warning Americans that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.

"There is an awful lot of chatter out there," U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

He said the "chatter" - communications among terrorism suspects about the planning of a possible attack - was "very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11."

A National Security Agency surveillance program that electronically collects communications on cellphones and emails - known as intercepts - had helped gather intelligence about this threat, Chambliss said.

It was one of the NSA surveillance programs revealed by former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden to media outlets.

Those programs "allow us to have the ability to gather this chatter," Chambliss said. "If we did not have these programs then we simply wouldn't be able to listen in on the bad guys."

'SERIOUS THREAT'

"This is the most serious threat that I've seen in the last several years," Chambliss said.

U.S. military forces in the Middle East region have been on a higher state of alert for the past several days because of the threat, a U.S. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The threat also has prompted some European countries to close their embassies in Yemen, home to an al Qaeda affiliate that is considered one of the most dangerous: al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Yemeni soldiers blocked roads around the U.S. and British embassies in Sanaa, while troops with automatic rifles stood outside the French Embassy.

Interpol, the France-based international police agency, on Saturday issued a global security alert advising member states to increase vigilance against attacks after a series of prison breaks in Iraq, Libya and Pakistan.

"Al Qaeda is in many ways stronger than it was before 9/11, because it's mutated and it spread and it can come at us from different directions," U.S. Representative Peter King, a Republican, said on ABC's "This Week."

"And al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is probably the most deadly of all the al Qaeda affiliates," he said.

Republicans and Democrats alike on Sunday television talk shows said the threat was serious and sought to defuse the controversy over the NSA surveillance programs, which critics say are an invasion of privacy and civil rights.

"The good news is that we picked up intelligence. And that's what we do. That's what NSA does," U.S. Representative Dutch Ruppersberger, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on ABC's "This Week."

"We've received information that high-level people from al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are talking about a major attack," he said.

The threat information came just before the Eid celebration at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan later this week and just over a month before the anniversary of al Qaeda's September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

A September 11 attack last year killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the actions taken to close the embassies and issue the global travel alert showed the Obama administration had learned lessons from Benghazi.

"Benghazi was a complete failure. The threats were real there. The reporting was real. And we basically dropped the ball. We've learned from Benghazi, thank God, and the administration is doing this right," he said.

Full marks for style and ambition for Drew Buck, who was riding a retro two-speed Hirondelle (Charlotte Barnes)

At 5am on Friday morning, the seventh 1,419km London Edinburgh London ride finished in the UK capital.?Every four years,?Audax UK stake a claim for the hardest cycling event in the country with the 881-mile route between the two cities.

At 5.30am on 28 July, 997 riders got underway on The Mall, in central London.?The course followed a route up the east coast before coming inland, skirting to the west of the North York Moors, crossing into Scotland near Carlisle, and turning back down south on the outskirts of Edinburgh.?Riders pass through checkpoints and have brevet cards stamped to show they have completed the distance.?

The first rider to get back to London ? in a swift time of 65 hours (an average speed of 21.8km/h) ? was Anco de Jong, from the Netherlands.?And spare a thought Drew Buck ? dressed in a beret and stripy jersey, he rode a two-speed Hirondelle popular in the early 20th century. He was just over 100 miles from London at lunchtime yesterday.

Womens Interests: Take Care of Your Inner Beauty

Let us talk about beauty from a different angle!

We have our own criteria for judging the beauty of a woman. We look the beauty of a lady from a certain angle and then pass the remarks whether she is beautiful or not. It's not fair. Let me tell every woman that she is unique and beautiful.

The business of beauty is thriving everywhere. Women are spending much of their time and money on buying beauty products. Even in the third world countries, women living below the poverty line, buy cheap and substandard beauty products, which give more harm to their skin than good.

It's the fundamental right of every woman to look beautiful. Every woman wants to listen the sweet words "you are beautiful". But the beauty of a woman is far from her looks or figure. Physical beauty is only one aspect while a beautiful charming personality is a complete blend of many fine characteristics such as good manners, etiquette, behavior, smile, intelligence, sense of humor, social and family values etc., all make a woman look beautiful and attractive.

Didn't you know that there is a marked difference between a carefully hand woven expensive Persian carpet and a cheap machine made carpet. Both of these cannot be equated. A beautiful woman is like an elegant hand-knotted Persian carpet. Each and every silky, colorful thread of her character, nicely woven into her personality, gives a woman an everlasting beauty and attraction.

Looks are very important indeed but the characteristics of a person are much more important. Besides taking care of your physical beauty, why not think of improving your inner beauty. The beauty which everyone admires is becoming a rare commodity these days. While on your way to a beauty parlor keep on thinking ways of improving your inner beauty.

Take care of yourself and take care of your inner beauty. No doubt you are a beautiful person.

Trying to survive isn?t the only thing you can do in the world of The Last Of Us: it?s true that the Infected have taken over the world but it?s also true that survivors can keep on living without some kind of side-activities. If blasting Infected is too dangerous for you, maybe you will want to invext some time in exploring the many different locations found in the game.

For starters, there are quite a lot of items to collect in the game: while some are absolutely optional and only completionists will want to find them all, many others will end up being useful in your surviving endeavors like training manuals, tools, parts and more. Some of these items will also allow you to understand the story behind The Last Of Us more, with some additional information that can only be discovered by finding some special items.

Pretty much each area of the game includes some collectibles, with the obvious exception of the Prologue area: even in the Jackson area you?ll be able to find a collectible item, a single comic.

Finding all collectibles is not going to be too hard: some of them will be in plain sight. At the same time, some of these extra objects are carefully hidden so if you don?t feel like searching every corner of each area, you can just follow our guides and find all the collectible items without wasting too much time searching.

We will be covering each collectible type, together with the details on the locations where you?ll be able to find them, starting from the first areas until the end of the game. Make sure to check out and follow the correct guide for the type of collectible you are searching for.

Comics

Collecting Comics doesn?t have any real advantage during the game since they?re completely optional. Finding all of them is not too hard since only a few of the game?s locations have them. Once all the Comics are found, the Endure And Survive trophy will be unlocked. Please note that there are no comics to be found in the first areas, the Quarantine Zone, the Outskirts and Bill?s Town.

Free Radicals

Only comic to be found in this chapter: to find it turn around and go back right at the beginning to find the comic inside a car hood.

Building a Toolkit for Home Health Emergencies - Healthcare ...

Building a Toolkit for Home Health Emergencies

Aug 1, 2013

It doesn?t matter how healthy you or your family members are or appear to be ? emergencies can strike at any time. Even the healthiest of individuals can become victims to sudden heart attacks, strokes or accidents, and there?s no amount of planning that can help to keep these issues from occurring at random. You can strive to live the healthiest lifestyle imaginable, but even that isn?t enough to keep certain ailments at bay.

updating-bathroom_modern

One of the best ways to keep the anxiety of suffering a sudden ailment away is to prepare a toolkit for home health emergencies. There are a variety of life-saving devices that everyone can benefit from having in their homes, and they don?t have to be exceedingly costly to pick up.

No emergency toolkit is complete without an AED, or automated external defibrillator. In the case that a heart-problem might arise, it can take quite a bit of time for an emergency team to show up at your house.

If you or one of your family members is having a heart-attack, it could indeed end up being too late.?An AED then can sometimes mean the difference between life or death.

Fortunately, they don?t have to be expensive to purchase. Since not all AEDs are created equal, be sure to take the time to compare?AED brands?before you make a purchase. Don?t take only the cost into consideration either; pay attention to the features each option offers, as some AEDs are more feature-rich than others.

First Aid Materials

It doesn?t matter how healthy someone is; all it takes is one accident for a scare to occur. Even chopping vegetables can result in a trip to the emergency room if you?re not paying attention, which makes it all the more important to have the proper first aid materials at your fingertips. If an event such as this happens, you?ve got to have the right tools at your disposal; rubbing alcohol isn?t going to be enough to get it done.

While you could fill an entire medicine cabinet with first aid materials if you wanted to, you really only need to consider the basics at first; bandages, antibacterial ointment and tape are enough to clean and protect most wounds, and if you?ve injured yourself beyond that scope, it may be worth visiting the ER.

Blood Pressure Cuff

It?s not always easy to tell whether or not one is close to having a cardiovascular event. Blood pressure, however, can be a strong indication that something isn?t right. Fortunately, you can test your blood pressure within the realm of your own home, as there are countless blood pressure cuffs available on the market.

If you find readings that are over the norm, you may want to make an appointment with your doctor. Excessively high blood pressure readings can sometimes warrant immediate attention, especially if you?re having other symptoms.

Don?t get stuck at home without the right emergency tools on your side. If you take the time to build a proper toolkit, you?ll be protecting yourself against potential disaster.

Remember, though, that even the best emergency toolkit may not be enough depending upon the situation, in which case you should always consider a trip to the emergency room.

Obamacare Making Cancer Treatment Worse, More Expensive ...

AP

AP

BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff

Obamacare is driving up the cost of cancer-fighting drugs while simultaneously reducing the quality of care for cancer patients, according to an editorial in the Wednesday?s Wall Street Journal.

Obamacare expands a program called 340B that has become extremely profitable for hospitals at the expense of taxpayers and private insurers, argues Scott Gottlieb, a doctor and fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Under 340B, eligible hospitals are allowed to buy drugs from drug companies at forced discounts of 25 percent to 50 percent. The hospitals can then bill government and private insurers for the full cost of the drugs, pocketing the spread. The arrangement gives 340B-qualified hospitals a big incentive to search for patients and prescribe lots of drugs. The costlier the drugs, the bigger the spread. So expensive cancer drugs are especially appealing.

While the program, created in 1992, was originally intended to affect only a fraction of all hospitals, by 2011 a third of all hospitals in America qualified to earn the windfall.

Obamacare expands this program by allowing it to cover other kinds of treatment centers, Gottlieb notes. The result is that hospitals are acquiring local clinics and shifting treatment of cancer patients to hospitals, where care is poorer and more expensive.

Gottlieb concludes:

One of the rationales behind the Affordable Care Act was that the law would end the gimmicks that distort incentives and drive up costs. In the case of the 340B program and its effect on cancer treatment, the law has only further distorted an already expensive gimmick.

COULTER: O'Reilly's bad history | The Daily Caller

Does anyone read anymore? I mean, besides tweets from Anthony Weiner?

During his otherwise excellent commentaries on race in America, Bill O?Reilly, host of the No. 1 cable news show, claimed on Tuesday night that the one person who tried to help African-Americans more than any other was ? Robert F. Kennedy!

No one laughed. I guess that?s what they?re teaching these days at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. (I can?t wait to hear how Ted Kennedy helped eradicate drunk driving!)

According to O?Reilly?s Bizarro-World history, Bobby Kennedy was ?the guy who was really concerned about African-Americans? and ?who really did something. ? He went in with the federal government and he cleaned out the rat?s nest that was abusing African-Americans in the South.?

Although this myth has been polished to perfection by the Kennedy PR machine (requiring all Kennedy stories to illustrate either courage or adorableness), it is simply a fact that helping blacks was not the Democrats? priority. Even the ones who wanted to, such as Bobby and John Kennedy, couldn?t risk upsetting the segregationists, more than 90 percent of whom were Democratic.

The job of actually enforcing civil rights and desegregating Southern schools fell to Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon.

Five years after Eisenhower had shown the Democrats how it?s done by sending federal troops to desegregate Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., President Kennedy and brother Bobby still dragged their feet in helping James Meredith enter the University of Mississippi.

On Feb. 7, 1961, Meredith wrote a beautiful letter to the Department of Justice, describing his inability to enroll at the University of Mississippi, He wrote:

?Whenever I attempt to reason logically about this matter, it grieves me deeply to realize that an individual, especially an American, the citizen of a free democratic nation, has to clamor with such procedures in order to try to gain just a small amount of his civil and human rights, and even after suffering the embarrassments and personal humiliation of this procedure, there still seems little hope of success.?

The full letter is worth looking up. I would venture to guess there are not many college applicants of any race who write this well today. (You know why? Because Americans don?t read anymore. You watch cable news and fill your heads with nonsense history and false facts.)

In response to Meredith?s eloquent letter, Bobby Kennedy did nothing.?And that?s how Bobby Kennedy ?cleaned out the rat?s nest that was abusing African-Americans in the South?!

Remember: This was seven years?after?the Supreme Court had already handed down its decision in Brown v. Board of Education ? a ruling expressly endorsed in the Republican Party platform, but not the Democratic platform, I might add.

But Democrats were in the White House, so Meredith had to take his case to the Supreme Court. Liberals were engaging in their usual massive resistance to court rulings they don?t like and neither Bobby nor John Kennedy would dare try to stop them.

UFC 163 'Prelims' preview and predictions for 'Aldo vs Korean Zombie' fights on Facebook/FX (Pt. 1)

More free UFC fights are coming to Facebook and FX this weekend (Sat., Aug. 3, 2013) when the UFC 163: "Aldo vs. Korean Zombie" pay-per-view (PPV) event kicks off from HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. MMAmania.com's Patrick Stumberg kicks off the UFC 163 "Prelims" party with part one of a two-part under card preview series.

Night (Sat., Aug. 3, 2013) of the brawling dead!

With a bizarre sequence of mixed martial arts (MMA) events, which culminated with Anthony Pettis challenging Ben Henderson at UFC 164, Chan Sung Jung -- who is affectionately referred to as "The Korean Zombie" -- has stepped up to face dominant Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo.

The clash between the talented pair of 145-pound talents will headline UFC 163, which goes down this Saturday at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In addition to the Jose Aldo vs. Chan Sung Jung main event, Phil Davis and Lyoto Machida will duke it out in the co-featured fight of the night with a potential title shot on the line, while The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): "Brazil" winner, Cezar Ferreira, enters the Octagon for the first time since the show Finale to take on Thiago Santos.

That's not all.

We've got seven "Prelims" under card matches to set the stage on Facebook and FX Networks, the first three of which we examine below.

Let's take a look:

145 lbs.: Rani Yahya vs. Josh Clopton

Career resurgences based on changing weight usually occur when a fighter drops some pounds, but Rani Yahya (18-7) has enjoyed new-found success since returning to Featherweight from 135 pounds, going 3-1 with the sole loss to top division contender Chad Mendes.

Most recently, he survived a late rally from former Sengoku champion Mizuto Hirota in the last Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) trip to Japan to earn a unanimous decision. In his more than 10-year career, Yahya has submitted the likes of Mark Hominick and Eddie Wineland, as well as given a prime "KID" Norifumi Yamamoto one of his toughest outs.

Though Josh Clopton (6-1-1) was defeated in the elimination round of "TUF 14, an injury to Akira Corassani at the Finale opened the door for his first Octagon appearance. It was not to be a successful one, however, as he was beaten up in the clinch by Steven Siler en route to a decision loss.

Clopton, fighting out of Gilbert Melendez?s Skrap Pack, has not competed since the Finale, which took place on Dec. 2011.

Every Brazil card needs its fair share of "Brazilian Guy vs. Foreign Patsy" showdowns to keep the crowd happy ... and this is one of them. Yahya is a world-class grappler with much improved takedowns and serviceable striking. Meanwhile, Clopton hasn?t fought in 1.5 years, failed to get on TUF and looked really mediocre against Siler.

The only question is how exactly Yahya squeezes the life out of him. I?m thinking arm-triangle choke.

Prediction: Yahya by first-round submission

205 lbs.: Ednaldo Oliveira vs. Francimar Barroso

The 6?7" Ednaldo Oliveira (13-1-1) towered over Gabriel Gonzaga in his UFC debut, but his lack of mass and wrestling cost him as he was taken down and submitted little more than three minutes into the Heavyweight showdown. Oliveira, whose nickname, "Lula Molusco," is the Portuguese name for Squidward Tentacles, had made his name in the Jungle Fight and WFE promotions, winning the latter?s Heavyweight title by beating one-time Junior dos Santos-slayer Joaquim Ferreira.

The dos Santos training partner will enjoy seven inches of height over his late-notice opponent.

When grappling legend Robert Drysdale was stricken with staph infection just two weeks before his fight with Oliveira, Nova Uniao-trained fighter Francimar Barroso (15-3) stepped up to the plate. Named a "Brazilian to Watch" back in 2010 by Sherdog, Francimar is 12-1 in his last 13 matches, scoring a five-second head kick knockout in that time.

He has gone the distance just once in his career, while he has knocked out eight during that span.

Despite the extremely short notice, I?m leaning towards Francimar on this one. Oliveira is enormous for 205, but his boxing, the lynchpin of his game, is very mediocre and his ground game is abysmal. All three of Barroso?s losses have come by knockout, so there is a chance he gets caught coming in, but I doubt it.

Francimar is strong, well-rounded, and can crack. Oliveira?s inability to maximize his reach will cost him as Barroso closes the distance, takes him down, and works him over with strikes and submission attempts for a second-round stoppage.

Prediction: Barroso by second-round submission

170 lbs.: Viscardi Andrade vs. Bristol Marunde

As a competitor on TUF: "Brazil 2," Viscardi Andrade (14-5) was the last member of Team Fabricio Werdum standing, making it all the way to the semifinals before being pounded out by William Macario. Professionally, Andrade?s only losses since starting his career 1-3 have been to current contender Yuri Alcantara and two-time UFC veteran Edilberto Crocota.

Andrade?s last four wins, and eight of his 14, have come inside the distance.

After losing badly to Ronaldo Souza in Strikeforce, Bristol Marunde (12-8) got a second chance in Zuffa courtesy of TUF 16, defeating the infamous Julian Lane in the round of 16 before falling to Neil Magny in the quarterfinals. His Octagon debut was a bit underwhelming, getting put on Queer Street by a huge elbow from Clint Hester.

Like Andrade, Marunde?s career started out poorly, going 3-5 before winning nine of his last 12 appearances.

Two guys with sloppy striking and solid grappling with relatively equal amounts of experience. I was about to break out the peyote and go on a spiritual quest to figure out the winner, but then I realized that one of them is Brazilian. This method is far less likely to end with me sneaking back over the border with a fresh coyote skin serving as a substitute for my mysteriously absent clothing ... so let?s go with that.

Prediction: Andrade by unanimous decision

You can catch the remaining four UFC 163 "Prelims" on FX on fight night and their previews and predictions right here on MMAmania at the same time tomorrow.

See you then, Maniacs.

Remember, too, that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC 163 card this weekend, starting with the Facebook "Prelims," which are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET, right on through the FX-televised under card bouts at 8 p.m. ET and then main card pay-per-view (PPV) action, which is slated to begin at 10 p.m. ET.

Rick Warren returns to pulpit after son's suicide

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Nearly four months after his son's suicide, popular pastor Rick Warren returned to the pulpit Saturday afternoon at the Southern California megachurch he founded.

Warren, dressed in his usual casual black T-shirt and jeans, took the stage at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif. with wife, Kay Warren, and was greeted with a long standing ovation by the congregation.

A shout of "We love you!" came from the crowd before Warren began.

"I love you, too," a smiling Warren replied. "Have I told you lately that I love you?"

It was the first time Warren had taken the Saddleback pulpit since his 27-year-old son Matthew shot and killed himself on April 5.

In the sermon, first in a series called "How To Get Through What You're Going Through," Rick Warren said he had the perfect role model for his struggles.

"God knows what it's like to lose a son," Warren said.

He remained mostly composed, but choked back tears at times, including when he thanked his surviving two children.

"How proud I was of Amy and Josh, who for 27 years loved their younger brother," Warren said. "They talked him off the ledge time after time. They are really my heroes."

He delivered a formal, prepared speech with notes and quotes from Scripture but often broke off to talk frankly about his son.

"I was in shock for at least a month after Matthew took his life," Warren said.

But, Warren said he was grateful to come from "a family of spiritual redwoods."

"Satan picked the wrong team to pick on," he said.

Warren has been an essential figure in the modern, megachurch brand of Christianity.

His multimillion-selling book "The Purpose Driven Life" made him a national star in the realms of religion and self-help, and he delivered the opening prayer at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration.

Saddleback, the church he founded in 1980, has grown to 20,000 members, according to Warren's biography on the church's website.

But in April, Matthew Warren, after a lifetime of struggle with depression, shot and killed himself in what Warren at the time called "a momentary wave of despair."

"For 27 years I prayed every day of my life for God to heal my son's mental illness," Warren said.

But Warren said Saturday that he intended to turn his grief into a message of service and hope.

"God wants to take your greatest sorrow and turn it into your life's greatest message," he said.

(AP) ? His game inconsistent and his new racket not offering much help, Roger Federer lost yet again to a player way down in the rankings.

The Swiss star fell 6-3, 6-4 to Germany's Daniel Brands in the second round of the Swiss Open on Thursday, the third straight tournament in which he made a startling exit.

Playing on clay and before home fans, Federer was troubled by the serve and big forehand of his 55th-ranked opponent.

"I wasn't consistent enough in the end," said Federer, who failed on five break-point chances. "He was serving well and I couldn't do enough with my return."

Federer's other losses in the past month were to No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky at Wimbledon and No. 114 Federico Delbonis at Hamburg, Germany.

The top-seeded Swiss is now ranked No. 5, his lowest in a decade since he started his run of 17 Grand Slam singles titles at Wimbledon in 2003.

Federer saved a first match point by serving an ace when trailing 5-3, and a second in the next game with a forehand winner. Brands, who took a set off Federer in a second-round loss at Hamburg, then ended the 65-minute match with a service winner in the thin mountain air.

"For sure the altitude has helped me," Brands said. "I served well and put pressure on him from the very beginning."

The 31-year-old Federer was returning to Gstaad for the first time since he won the title in 2004 and where he debuted on the ATP Tour in 1998 as a 17-year-old ranked No. 702.

Federer rarely loses an opening match. This defeat ranks alongside that of his round-of-64 exit in straight sets at Indian Wells, Calif., in March 2007 to Guillermo Canas of Argentina, then ranked No. 60.

Federer was hoping to tune his game in Gstaad and Hamburg after his second-round exit at Wimbledon. After a three-week break, he returned in Hamburg, testing his new racket yet citing back pains that limited his movement. He lost there in the semifinals.

"I'm happy that I was able to play because I've had problems for some time now, already in Hamburg," Federer said. "But it didn't get worse during today's match."

Brands broke Federer to lead 4-2 in the opening set when he put away an overhead at the net. But the 26-year-old German closed the first set with two aces, among his 11 for the match. Federer immediately lost serve in the second set by netting a backhand volley and saved three break-point chances to avoid trailing 3-0.

Federer is to return next month at the Montreal Masters and then defend his Cincinnati Masters title before the U.S. Open begins Aug. 26.

Two other seeded players were ousted in the second round: Third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia lost to Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-2; and eighth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain retired with a back injury against Victor Hanescu of Romania while trailing 7-6 (2), 3-2.

Also, Marcel Granollers of Spain defeated Federico Delbonis of Argentina 6-2, 7-5.

Joe Scarborough: Good That GOP Denouncing Steve King Remarks

MSNBC talk-show host Joe Scarborough said it was positive that Republican leaders condemned recent remarks made by Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King about immigration.

"I do think it is significant Republicans are finally, finally after three, four years of keeping their mouth shut every time something extreme was said, we're finally having leaders speak out. That's important," Scarborough said in a panel discussion Thursday on "Morning Joe."

Story continues below video.

His comments focused on King's remarks from a Newsmax interview July 18 where the congressman said some illegal immigrant youths are drug smugglers with "calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert."

"Some of them are valedictorians ? and their parents brought them in. It wasn't their fault. It's true in some cases, but they aren't all valedictorians. They weren't all brought in by their parents," King said in the interview.

Prominent Republicans put out statements this week strongly denouncing King's remarks.

"What he said is wrong," House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio said in a statement on Tuesday. "There can be honest disagreements about policy without using hateful language. Everyone needs to remember that."

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia said, "I strongly disagree with his characterization of the children of immigrants and find the comments inexcusable."

On the "Morning Joe" panel, Nicole Wallace, a former communications director for President George W. Bush, held Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida in contrast to King.

Speaking of Rubio's recent attempts on immigration reform, Wallace said, "All Americans saw a prominent, important Republican who was talked about as someone who might run for president, doing his best. Steve King erased any good that Marco Rubio did."

Jim VandeHei, executive editor of Politico, said, "It's these guys that say these crazy things that are routinely getting picked up and have us talking about it, have other people talking about it, and it defines down the Republican Party."

"We're not questioning whether Steve King can get re-elected, we're questioning whether we can ever elect a Republican to the White House again that can nominate Supreme Court justices in our lifetime," Scarborough, a Republican, commented.

Shock-proof iPad mini case packs in neat trickery

New Trent's Airbender Mini is a protective case for the iPad mini

New Trent's Airbender Mini is a protective case for the iPad mini

Image Gallery (6 images)

The iPad mini may indeed be small and portable, but after spending over $300 on one, you probably don?t want to send it out into the world unprotected. While there are already various aftermarket cases available to do the job, New Trent?s just-released Airbender Mini offers a couple of particularly interesting features.

First of all, the rubberized, shock-proof and splash-proof Airbender Mini does indeed protect the little tablet. Even when opened, the polycarbonate clamshell-type case keeps the iPad?s display safe from scratches via an integrated screen protector, which still allows for touchscreen functionality.

The Airbender also features a low-profile Bluetooth keyboard, for users who don?t like the iPad?s non-tactile virtual equivalent.

The keyboard-containing half of the case is connected to the tablet-containing half using an aluminum arm. That arm allows the tablet to be rotated 360 degrees relative to the keyboard, allowing it to be viewed in portrait or landscape modes. The arm can also be pulled completely free of the keyboard, separating the two halves and serving as a stand for the iPad.

Tipping the scales at 9.1 ounces (258 g), the Airbender Mini is available now via the company website and Amazon, for US$39.95. A demo of the case can be seen in the video below.

A Scientist Debunks The 'Magic' Of Vitamins And Supplements

Ads often tout dietary supplements and vitamins as "natural" remedies. But studies show megadoses of some vitamins can actually boost the risk of heart disease and cancer, warns Dr. Paul Offit.

Ads often tout dietary supplements and vitamins as "natural" remedies. But studies show megadoses of some vitamins can actually boost the risk of heart disease and cancer, warns Dr. Paul Offit.

iStockphoto.com

A pediatrician who spent years defending childhood vaccines against the likes of actress/activist Jenny McCarthy has launched an assault on megavitamins and dietary supplements.

"If you take large quantities of vitamin A, vtamin E, beta carotene [or] selenium you increase your risk of cancer, risk of heart disease, and you could shorten your life," says Dr. Paul Offit, a researcher at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Many large studies in recent years have shown that vitamins and dietary supplements rarely help and often hurt, Offit says. Yet a huge number of people still believe that these products will improve their health. So, Offit says, he decided to challenge the false beliefs of "the church of vitamins and supplements."

Offit made the remarks during an appearance in Washington, D.C., Monday to promote his latest book: Do You Believe in Magic? The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine.

Offit, an infectious disease specialist and the co-inventor of a rotavirus vaccine, is best known for publicly challenging groups that claim there is a link between childhood vaccines and autism. That effort often pitted him against actress Jenny McCarthy, who became a spokeswoman for anti-vaccine groups.

One big problem with dietary supplements is a 1994 law that exempts them from the tighter scrutiny the FDA applies to its regulation of medicines, Offit says. So the makers of a garlic supplement can say that it "supports cardiovascular health" even though a government study found that garlic supplements didn't lower cholesterol. Meanwhile, Offit says, patients clearly benefit from a range of FDA-approved statin drugs that actually do what garlic supplements claim to do.

Dietary supplements are often advertised as "natural," Offit says, even though that term can be misleading. For example, almonds are a natural source of vitamin E. But you would have to eat 17 pounds of almonds to get the amount of vitamin E in a single capsule sold by one supplement maker, Offit says. "So how is this a natural thing to do?"

Offit says doctors are partly to blame for the growing popularity of high-dose vitamins and other dietary supplements. Rather than pushing back against patients who want to take them, he says, doctors have acted like waiters at a restaurant, simply asking, "What would you like?"

Many hospitals also include unproved dietary supplements in their list of medicines available to patients, Offit says. But he says his own institution, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, plans to remove nearly all supplements from its list later this month.

Offit says his attack on dietary supplements has generated a steady stream of hate mail. But he says it's not as harsh as the hate mail he used to get from people who believe vaccines cause autism. "This is more, I'm 'a liar and a shill for the pharmaceutical industry,' " he says, "not, 'You're going to hell.' "

Offit has some strong defenders, though, including former President Jimmy Carter and Carter's wife, Rosalynn. They sat in the front row at Offit's appearance in D.C. And during a question and answer session, the former president rose to tell Offit: "You've been a hero around our house for a long time."

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke touts early successes

Mayor Andy Berke discusses his first 100 days at the city's helm. Mayor Andy Berke discusses his first 100 days at the city's helm. "; objLink.IsAboveImage = false; objLink.LinkTarget = "_blank"; objLink.Render();

Poll

Is Mayor Andy Berke doing a good job so far?

The forks stopped clanking and people turned their chairs for a better view as Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke stepped up to the podium at the Chattanooga Convention Center on Thursday.

The 45-year-old attorney and former Democratic state senator, who is approaching his 100th day in the mayor's office this week, trotted out a list of his accomplishments to business and community builders at a weekly Rotary Club meeting.

He said he's revamped City Hall, fired 18 department heads and eliminated four departments his predecessor, Ron Littlefield, had created in the previous eight years.

Berke pushed the building's owner to clean up the troubled Patten Towers after a fire left the building's 241 elderly and disabled residents without a place to live, and promised the city's Rotarians that he would fight Chattanooga's gang problem by borrowing from a successful North Carolina anti-drug program.

"We are transforming the culture of government," Berke told the group.

But even as the freshman mayor drew praise from some in the Scenic City, other leaders say they are anxious to see tangible results.

"We had a honeymoon period," said Everlena Holmes, Glenwood block leader coordinator. "By September he needs to have a plan on the ground going."

Berke's ability to listen and hold community meetings has made him popular with many marginalized voters. He said early on that residents ideas, concerns and their participation would be "central to my administration."

But his tenure thus far has been marked by little specific action on any particular issue.

Though Berke took credit for 917 jobs created on his watch, a Times Free Press review found that the genesis of almost all those jobs came under Littlefield.

A Berke pledge to combat violence by 2014 has yet to reduce violence on the streets. Street shootings are up since he disbanded the city's gang task force and replaced it with his own group. Chattanooga was rocked by 71 shootings and 86 deaths in the first half of 2013, compared to 51 shootings and 59 victims for the same period in 2012.

"I don't see anything getting done except more people getting shot," said former Republican Party chairman Marty Van Schaaf.

However, Berke has impressed in other, less headline-grabbing ways.

Perrin Lance, president of Chattanooga Organized for Action, said the mayor is an excellent listener.

Lance applauded Berke for listening to Lincoln Park residents over plans to build a road expansion that would run alongside a historically black park.

Yet it remains to be seen whether Berke will step up and address social and economic problems that extend beyond downtown Chattanooga, Lance said.

"I think Mayor Berke has a challenge that I haven't heard him address," Lance said. "It's the question of equity. We need a mayor that is going to be the mayor of the other Chattanooga."

BERKE'S VIEW

From his seat across a long conference table in City Hall, Berke, wearing a navy blue striped suit and tie, told the Times Free Press on Friday that he's most surprised by how time-consuming being mayor can be.

"Going from a speech to a meeting on economic development to a phone call with the police chief ... demands an ability to clear your mind and focus quickly," he said.

Berke, who ran without any substantial competition, swept 72 percent of the votes to gain the mayor's seat. In his inaugural address and on the campaign trail, Berke promised to focus on youth development, public safety and economic development.

"I believe we have accomplished a tremendous amount in 100 days," he said.

Berke pointed to his public safety committee, which has many members from the former gang task force, including Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond, Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger and District Attorney General Bill Cox.

The committee's main initiative, nicknamed High Point after the city that founded the program, will roll out in 2014. The main focus is to eliminate gang violence through focusing on the major drug dealers, but Berke said the program also includes cease-fire negations and domestic violence programs.

"All these don't happen overnight," he said. "We need to reduce the shootings. Period. And we are going to do that."

He promises the community will see fewer shootings by 2014.

Some former city officials criticized Berke for being so quick to disband the task force, questioning whether it was a waste for the work already done.

"I was disappointed to see him dismantle the gang task force to begin again discussions that had already taken place," said Pam Ladd, former City Council chairwoman.

Other former officials echoed Ladd.

Looking at job growth in the city, Berke said the city will continue to work with the Chamber of Commerce. But his newly created Department of Economic and Community Development will focus on all levels of business, and it will connect job growth directly to the neighborhoods by finding a way to provide public transportation so the community can get to those jobs, he said.

As for how he will do it, Berke declined to be specific.

On his focus on youth development, Berke cited the literacy programs at the recreation centers, where young children are being taught to read.

Yet this initiative began last year under the former gang task force that the mayor disbanded when he took office.

Compared to Littlefield, some community members said they find Berke more approachable.

Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association President Vannice Hughley said that before Berke, neighbors didn't know what was happening on projects that might affect their community until the decision already had been made.

"He's worked step by step, he's been in the trenches with us," Hughley said. "[Before], we were never at the table."

Joyce Watson Careathers, president of the Churchville Neighborhood Association said she, too, admires how Berke has reached out to the local communities.

County officials also say communication is better between the city and county.

Hamilton County school board members Jeffrey Wilson and David Testerman said Berke has expressed interest in the city being involved in the school system.

"He's helped start the discussion of what role can the city of Chattanooga play in helping improve education for our youth," Wilson said.

Littlefield's archenemy Jim Folkner, who led the charge to have the mayor recalled, said he will wait to pass judgment on Berke until after the budget is revealed.

City officials have said they will present the budget to the City Council on July 30.

'Machete' filmmaker claims Texas withdrew funding over 'inappropriate' depiction of Texans

Still from movie Machete

Houston: A lawsuit filed by Austin filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and the production company behind his film "Machete" accuses The Texas Film Commission of denying agreed-to financial incentives after the agency decided the film was "inappropriate."

Machete Chop Shop Inc. says in a suit filed on Saturday in Travis County that the commission backed out of partially reimbursing the cost of the film after coming under fire for its violence and depiction of Texans.

Before the movie was released in September 2010, anti-immigration groups were upset over the film's trailer, citing its violent imagery and Robert DeNiro's cartoonish role as a senator who kills illegal immigrants.

According to court documents, the producers' application for a grant under the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program was approved in May 2009, one month after Governor Rick Perry signed the program into law at Mr Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios.

At the bill signing, Mr Rodriguez announced that the bill would allow him to make films in Texas, including "Machete."

The complaint states that former commission head Bob Hudgins verified that the script complied with content requirements and also claims he approved the incentive package.

Once filmmakers knew they had additional state funding, they increased their budget, the complaint says, banking on a state contribution of nearly $US8 million.

Wall Street slips after record highs, tech shares weigh

By Chuck Mikolajczak

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks dipped on Friday, edging back from record highs as the technology sector weighed heavily a day after Microsoft and Google reported disappointing results.

Microsoft Corp was the biggest drag on the three major indexes, with the Nasdaq showing the steepest declines. Google Inc also dragged on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq as both companies reported earnings that fell short of expectations.

Microsoft slumped 10.9 percent to $31.56, while Google lost 1.1 percent to $901.50. The S&P tech sector <.splrct> led declines, falling 2 percent.

"As with every earnings season, you have some high profile misses, but still the market is obviously taking it in stride," said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio. "We think it's encouraging we're shaking off the tech disappointments."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 28.61 points, or 0.18 percent, to 15,519.93. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 0.97 points, or 0.06 percent, to 1,688.40. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> dropped 28.93 points, or 0.80 percent, to 3,582.34.

""As long as companies can beat the lowered estimates - and the bar is definitely set low - they should be rewarded. On the flip side, if they miss, they will be just as much punished," Detrick said.

Also in the tech sector, Advanced Micro Devices Inc tumbled 14.2 percent to $3.98 after the company said gross margins would fall, even as the chipmaker forecast stronger-than-expected revenue growth in the third quarter.

Still, encouraging earnings reports from other companies helped keep the S&P 500 near break-even.

General Electric Co and Schlumberger NV both reported better-than-expected results, sending their shares higher. Dow component GE rose 4.5 percent to $24.70, while Schlumberger was up 5.6 percent to $82.87 as the biggest boosts to the benchmark S&P index.

In the absence of fresh economic data, the high-profile earnings disappointments in the tech sector prompted investors to lock in profits after some rosy results and reassuring comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Thursday sent the Dow and S&P to record closing levels. The benchmark S&P is up more than 18 percent for the year.

Analysts expect S&P 500 companies' second-quarter earnings to have grown 2.9 percent from a year earlier, with revenue up 1.1 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Through Friday, of the 104 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings for the quarter, 65.4 percent have reported earnings above analyst expectations, while 51 percent have topped revenue estimates.

Among other companies to report, Whirlpool Corp climbed 7.4 percent to $128.20 after raising its full-year outlook.

Intuitive Surgical Inc slid 11.9 percent to $371.44 after the company cut its 2013 sales forecast and said U.S. regulators had issued a warning after an inspection of its facilities.
