Anti-Lynas group enters politics to bring down BN in Pahang

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/images/uploads/2013/january2013/m_wongtack301.jpg

(TMI) -?Environmental group Himpunan Hijau today said it will campaign against the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition in Pahang in its bid to stop Lynas from operating its controversial rare-earth plant in the state.

?

?Himpunan Hijau from today onwards is entering politics,? the group?s chairman Wong Tack(picture)?told a press conference today, saying that Himpunan Hijau wants to change the state government.

At the launch of the group?s ?Pahang Green Corridor? campaign today, Himpunan Hijau said it will campaign for federal opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and will focus more on six out of eight parliamentary constituencies and 14 out of 23 state constituencies in that zone.

?

?Our job now...is to make sure our team will be down to the?kampung?(village) and visit every single family and reach every quarter of society,? Wong Tack said, adding that the group will set up committees called Angkatan Mat Kilau to giveceramah?(talks) and spread information among those in the rural areas.

When asked what is the assurance that PR will stop the Lynas project if it wrests control of Pahang, Wong said the group has given up hope on the ruling BN coalition.

?We have verbal assurance from the Pakatan Rakyat that if they are in power, they will close down Lynas...so we take this promise seriously,? Wong said.

Discovery of sexual mating in Candida albicans could provide insights into infections

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Like many fungi and one-celled organisms, Candida albicans, a normally harmless microbe that can turn deadly, has long been thought to reproduce without sexual mating. But a new study by Professor Judith Berman and colleagues at the University of Minnesota and Tel Aviv University shows that C. albicans is capable of sexual reproduction.

The finding, published online by Nature January 30, represents an important breakthrough in understanding how this pathogen has been shaped by evolution, which could suggest strategies for preventing and treating the often serious infections that it causes.

The most common fungus that infects humans, C. albicans is part of the large community of microorganisms that live for the most part harmlessly within the human gut. But unlike many of its neighbors, this one-celled yeast can also cause disease, ranging from thrush (an oral infection) and vaginal yeast infections to systemic blood infections that cause organ failure and death and usually occur in people with immune defects related to HIV/AIDS, organ transplantation or chemotherapy. C. albicans is responsible for400,000 deaths annually.

Most single-celled organisms reproduce by dividing, but others reproduce asexually, parasexually or via sexual mating. Scientists have long believed that C. Albicans reproduce without mating.

Organisms that produce asexually or parasexually are diploid, which means they have two sets of chromosomes and thus can reproduce without a mate. Organisms that reproduce sexually are haploid, which means they have one set of chromosomes and need a mate to provide a second set. C. Albicans was believed to be diploid, but this study shows that the yeast is sometimes haploid, and that these haploids are capable of sexual reproduction.

Sexual reproduction fuels the evolution of higher organisms because it combines DNA from two parents to create one organism. The haploid isolates discovered in Professor Berman's lab arise only rarely within a population, and have been detected following propagation in the lab or in a mammalian host. These haploids can mate with other haploids to generate diploid strains with new combinations of DNA, which may provide the diversity required for fungus to evolve.

The haploid C. albicans isolates also pave the way for genetic studies of the pathogen, such as the construction of "libraries" of recessive mutant strains. In addition, the ability to perform genetic crosses between haploids will help produce modified diploid strains that should help scientists better understand interactions between the fungus and its host and how it transforms from a harmless microbe into a deadly pathogen.

Berman holds appointments and has laboratories at the University of Minnesota's College of Biological Sciences and Tel Aviv University.

The work was done in collaboration with researchers at Bowdoin College (Maine), Brown University (Rhode Island), A*STAR (Singapore) and at the Taipei Medical University (Taiwan) and was funded, in part, by the National Institutes of Health.

Dutch civil court ruling on Shell's responsibility for cleaning up oil spills in Nigeria

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Dutch judges are ruling in a landmark civil action by Nigerian farmers who want to hold oil giant Shell liable for poisoning their fish ponds and farmlands with leaking pipelines.

The decision being announced Wednesday could set a legal precedent for holding multinationals responsible for their actions overseas.

Lawyers for the four Nigerians from the oil-rich Niger delta argue Shell makes key policy decisions at its Hague headquarters, so the Dutch court has jurisdiction.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC long argued that the case, which was launched in 2008, should be heard in Nigeria.

The case at The Hague Civil Court marks the first time a Dutch company has been sued for alleged environmental mismanagement caused by a foreign subsidiary and could pave the way for similar claims if it succeeds.

Gaming Glutes Header

Click 'play' for today's dose of butt-jiggling joy.

We?re sure you?ll all concur, gentlemen, that Monday mornings suck monkey nuts. Even beardy philanthropist Bob Geldof knows this, as the much-vaunted song he penned, I Don?t Like Mondays, attests (Prospective titles that were eventually rejected included Bollocks to Mondays and Screw It, I?m Going to Call in Sick, Pretend I?ve Got Hemorrhoids Again. Would he have been knighted by Britain?s beloved Queen Lizzie for that? He would not.)

Let?s alleviate the tedium of this craptacular day, then, with an amusing-yet-arousing optical illusion. Allegedly, there?s a television in the above video, but we?re damned if we can see it. We?ll wager our wangs that you won?t, either. Test your powers of observation against the fine form of ?Tahiticora,? who -purportedly- is indulging in Colin McRae Dirt 2.

Still, the copious quantities of dirt (sweet dirty, dirty dirtiness) are plain to see, and what more could our gonads ask for?

Senate confirms Kerry nomination for State Dept.

Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? The Senate overwhelmingly confirmed President Barack Obama's choice of five-term Sen. John Kerry to be secretary of state, with Republicans and Democrats praising him as the ideal successor to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The vote Tuesday was 94-3. One senator ? Kerry ? voted present and accepted congratulations from colleagues on the Senate floor. The roll call came just hours after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved the man who has led the panel for the past four years.

No date has been set for Kerry's swearing-in, but in a letter to Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Kerry says his resignation is effective at 4 p.m. Friday. The State Departments plans a welcoming ceremony for Kerry on Monday.

Obama tapped Kerry, 69, the son of a diplomat, decorated Vietnam veteran and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, to succeed Clinton, who is stepping down after four years. The Massachusetts Democrat, who had pined for the job but was passed over in 2009, has served as Obama's unofficial envoy, smoothing fractious ties with Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"Sen. Kerry will need no introduction to the world's political and military leaders and will begin Day One fully conversant not only with the intricacies of U.S. foreign policy, but able to act on a multitude of international stages," said Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who will succeed Kerry as committee chairman.

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the panel's top Republican, called Kerry "a realist" who will deal with unrest in Egypt, civil war in Syria, the threat of al-Qaida-linked groups in Africa and Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Kerry, a forceful proponent of climate change legislation, also will have a say in whether the United States moves ahead on the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada, a divisive issue that has roiled environmentalists.

Obama had nominated Kerry after Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, removed her name from consideration following criticism from Republicans over her initial comments about the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Voting against Kerry were three Republicans ? Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and John Cornyn and Ted Cruz of Texas. Absent from the vote were Sens. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and John Hoeven, R-N.D.

"Sen. Kerry has a long history of liberal positions that are not consistent with a majority of Texans," Cornyn said in a statement. The senator is up for re-election next year and could face a tea party challenge.

Kerry's smooth path to the nation's top diplomatic job stands in stark contrast to the harsher treatment for Obama's other national security nominees ? Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary and John Brennan to be CIA director.

Hagel, the former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska, faces strong opposition from some of his onetime GOP colleagues who question his support for reductions in the nuclear arsenal and cuts in defense spending. Lawmakers also have questioned whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel and strongly opposed to any outreach to Iran.

Democrats have rallied for Hagel, and he has the announced support of at least a dozen members in advance of his confirmation hearing on Thursday. Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi will support Hagel, a spokesman said Tuesday, making him the first Republican to signal he will vote for the nomination.

Six Republicans have said they would vote against him, with some opposing Obama's choice even before the president's announcement.

Brennan faces questions from the GOP about White House leaks of classified information and from Democrats about the administration's use of drones.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened to block the nomination of both men until he gets more answers from the Obama administration about the assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Graham, who earlier this month signaled he would delay Brennan's pick, said in an interview Monday night with Fox News' "On the Record" the he would "absolutely" block Hagel unless Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testifies about the attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton testified for more than five hours last Wednesday before the House and Senate, but that wasn't sufficient for Graham.

"Hillary Clinton got away with murder, in my view," he said. "She said they had a clear-eyed view of the threats. How could you have a clear-eyed of the threats in Benghazi when you didn't know about the ambassador's cable coming back from Libya?"

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., told reporters Tuesday that a hearing with Panetta on Libya is planned though the date is uncertain. Graham welcomed that news and said he would not thwart a committee vote on the nomination.

"Happy as a clam. News to me," said Graham, who met with Hagel for 20 minutes on Tuesday.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said Panetta had not responded yet to the request but that the department has been forthcoming with information. He insisted that the Hagel confirmation process move as quickly as possible.

Two former chairmen of the committee ? Democrat Sam Nunn of Georgia and Republican John Warner of Virginia ? plan to introduce Hagel, according to officials close to the confirmation process. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the committee has not formally made an announcement.

As a White House emissary, Kerry has tamped down diplomatic fires for Obama. He also has stepped ahead of the administration on a handful of crises. He joined Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., as an early proponent of a more aggressive policy toward Libya, pushing for using military forces to impose a "no-fly zone" over Libya as Moammar Gadhafi's forces killed rebels and other citizens. He was one of the early voices calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down as revolution roiled the nation two years ago.

During his tenure, Kerry has pushed for reducing the number of nuclear weapons, shepherding a U.S.-Russia treaty through the Senate in December 2010, and has cast climate change as a national security threat, joining forces with Republicans on legislation that faced too many obstacles to win congressional passage.

He has led delegations to Syria and met a few times with President Bashar Assad, now a pariah in U.S. eyes after months of civil war and bloodshed as the government looks to put down a people's rebellion. Figuring out an end-game for the Middle East country would demand all of Kerry's skills.

The selection of Kerry closes a political circle with Obama. In 2004, it was White House hopeful Kerry who asked a largely unknown Illinois state senator to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention in Boston, handing the national stage to Obama. Kerry lost that election to President George W. Bush. Four years later, Obama was the White House hopeful who succeeded where Kerry had failed.

(AP) ? Overall leader Tina Maze won a World Cup slalom Sunday before her home fans a day after she just missed capturing the giant slalom.

She led after the opening run and finished the two runs in 1 minute, 33.68 seconds down the Radvanje course. Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was second, 0.86 seconds behind. Kathrin Zettel of Austria was third, 1.13 back.

Maze lost Saturday's giant slalom by 0.08 seconds to Lindsey Vonn.

In the slalom, Vonn failed to qualify for the second leg. American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin moved up from 13th after the opening run to finish sixth and maintained a 13-point lead ahead of Maze in the slalom standings.

In the overall standings, Maze has more than twice as many points as her nearest challenger, Maria Hoefl-Riesch.

Businesses plan to boost spending, gauge shows

12 hrs.

A gauge of business investment improved in December, a sign that worries over tighter fiscal policy may not have held back capital spending plans as much as feared at the end of 2012.?

The Commerce Department said on Monday that non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for investment plans, edged up 0.2 percent last month.?

Many economists had expected businesses to be more timid with spending late last year because of uncertainty over government spending cuts and tax increases, which had been scheduled to kick in this month. Congress struck a last-minute deal in early January to avoid or postpone most of the austerity measures.?

Monday's data showed companies were still planning to expand their businesses.?

"There's a lot more confidence," said Wayne Kaufman, an analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York.?

The data pushed down prices for U.S. government debt, while giving the dollar a lift against the yen. But stock prices opened little changed.?

The report showed new orders for overall durable goods - long lasting factory goods from toasters to automobiles - jumped 4.6 percent in December, beating economists expectations of a 1.8 percent gain.?

Gains were broad based, with new orders for machinery, cars and primary metals all increasing. Orders of civilian aircraft, a volatile category, jumped 10.1 percent.?

Economists still think economic growth cooled in the fourth quarter as companies slowed the pace at which they re-stocked their shelves.?

But Monday's report suggested businesses expect demand in the U.S. economy to improve.?

In a further sign firms were betting their business will grow, the investment plans proxy for November was revised higher to show a 3 percent gain.?

"It certainly seems to us that companies are slowly but surely expanding," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.?

(AP) ? With a team flag waving from an open window of their chartered plane, the San Francisco 49ers arrived at their first Super Bowl in 18 years on Sunday.

The players walked off the airplane in a businesslike manner ? no video recorders or cameras, no waves to onlookers. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, wearing a red wool cap sporting "49ers" on it, mouthed the words to a song on his head phones as he calmly walked on the tarmac.

Most of the team's veteran players disembarked first, including center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl three years ago with the Saints.

The 49ers will play Baltimore next Sunday, seeking their sixth Super Bowl crown but first since the 1994 season. The Ravens arrive Monday.

Successful Salespeople Have Moderate Temperaments

Cover Image: January 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

The most gregarious salespeople are not the most successful

Image: JOSH GOSFIELD Corbis

Store managers and psychologists have long believed that outgoing individuals make the best salespeople. Yet research now suggests that extroverts are actually less successful at making sales than people with more moderate social temperaments. Adam Grant, associate professor of management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, gave personality tests to 340 salespeople and compared their extroversion scores to their yearly revenue. Those who scored exactly halfway between the poles of extreme extroversion and extreme introversion?whom Grant calls ?ambiverts??earned 24 percent more than the introverts and, surprisingly, 32 percent more than the extroverts.

Grant?who is a self-described ambivert and a former salesman himself?says he is not sure why such individuals perform better, but it may be that ?they're less likely to get distracted and to talk too much?they find the right balance between talking and listening.? In addition, extroverted salespeople may sometimes be too pushy and turn potential buyers off.

Next, Grant plans to investigate whether successful ambiverts are always socially even-keeled or whether they tend to fluctuate between extroversion and introversion depending on factors such as mood or the temperament of their customers.

This article was originally published with the title Death of a Salesman Stereotype.

Obama: Tough call on letting a son play football

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is a big football fan with two daughters, but if he had a son, he says he'd "have to think long and hard" before letting him play because of the physical toll the game takes.

"I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," Obama tells The New Republic.

"In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much."

In an interview in the magazine's Feb. 11 issue, Obama said he worries more about college players than he does about those in the NFL.

"The NFL players have a union, they're grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies," Obama said. "You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello responded Sunday, "We have no higher priority than player health and safety at all levels of the game."

Pentagon cutting jobs, maintenance due to budget fears: official

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon has begun laying off many of its 46,000 temporary and contract workers and delaying maintenance on aircraft and ships to slow spending due to fears it may be hit by new budget cuts, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said on Friday.

The Pentagon also plans to formally notify Congress in the next few weeks that if further budget cuts take place on March 1, it will furlough most of its 800,000 full-time civilian employees, probably by asking them to take a day off per week for the last 22 weeks of the fiscal year, Carter said.

"Obviously this is a terrible thing to have to do to our employees and to the mission," Carter said. "But it's necessary because it'll save $5 billion and we have to find that money."

The cost-cutting steps come as the Pentagon tries to deal with budget uncertainty caused by the threat of $45 billion in across-the-board spending reductions on March 1 and Congress's failure to appropriate defense funding for the 2013 fiscal year.

The Pentagon currently is absorbing $487 billion in cuts to projected defense spending over 10 years that were agreed in the Budget Control Act of 2011. That law also required the additional across-the-board cuts by January 1, 2013, unless Congress agreed to an alternative.

Lawmakers failed to reach a new deal but did agree to postpone the across-the-board cuts until March 1 to give themselves more time. But March 1 is five months into the fiscal year, giving the Pentagon less time to absorb any cuts.

Defense officials had long resisted taking action in response to the threat of additional reductions, saying they were put in place to try to force Congress to reach an alternative.

But Carter said the congressional debate on U.S. financial issues in late December had been sobering, with little discussion of how cuts would affect the Pentagon or its mission. Postponing the decision for another two months reduced the time the department would have to respond.

"When we were marching up to January 1 we had more runway, more time to absorb cuts if we had to absorb cuts," Carter said. "Now we're running out of time and so for those two reasons, our risk calculus has to change ... and we need to begin acting."

Carter asked the military services two weeks ago to take steps to reduce their rate of spending. He said he asked them for detailed plans by February 1 on what they are doing to reduce short-term spending before the $45 billion in new cuts are due to go into effect on March 1.

He also asked for detailed long-term planning by February 8 on how the services will implement the $45 billion in across-the-board cuts if they go into effect.

    BUDGET MESS

Congressional failure to allocate funding for defense for the 2013 fiscal year has complicated the Pentagon's budget mess. The department is currently operating on a continuing resolution that maintains funding at 2012 levels until March 27.

"The problem is that the money is in the wrong pots," Carter said. He said the Pentagon had planned to spend considerably more for operations and maintenance in 2013 than it did in 2012.

"We don't have enough money to operate the forces in the way we thought we were going to," Carter said. "That's the problem. And that's a more than $10 billion problem. And we're running out of time to eat that $10 billion and that's the reason that we need to act now."

To slow the rate of spending, the department has put a freeze on civilian hiring, he said. Usually the department hires 1,000 to 2,000 civilians a week, more than 44 percent of them military veterans and 86 percent of them living and working across the country, not in Washington.

The department's 46,000 temporary and contract employees are "all now subject to release," Carter said, meaning they will either be let go now or will not have their contracts extended. The only exception would be if they are performing jobs critical to the war or the department's basic mission.

The department also is cutting back on base and equipment maintenance, which costs about $15 billion per year. He said the Navy would cancel maintenance on 30 ships that had been planned for the third and fourth quarters this year.

"They're not going to sign those contracts with the shipyards that do that work," Carter said.

Carter said the Pentagon would have to do "more draconian things" if Congress allows the $45 billion in cuts to go into effect, likely leading to "a pervasive crisis in readiness."

He said the Army projected that if the cuts occur, two-thirds of its active brigades and all of its reserve brigades would be operating at reduced readiness. Funds for training would primarily be used to prepare troops deploying to Afghanistan, while others would largely do without, he said.

Most Air Force flying units would be at reduced readiness by the end of the year, he said. The Navy would have to cut back steaming days by 30 percent to 35 percent, affecting its presence in the Gulf and Asia-Pacific region. He said the cuts might affect the U.S. ability to keep two carriers in the Gulf.

The Art of Reciprocity in Interviewing | Personal Branding Blog - Dan ...

Interviews should be a dialogue. Interviews should be a conversation. Interviews should be a chance for each party to get a feel for the other. Fortunately, smart companies have changed interviews from what they were in the past. Interviews are no longer just about the needs of a company to fill a role. They have morphed to allow the person looking to fill that role into becoming an active agent in the process.

The reciprocity in interviewing involves two or more people in a dialogue to determine if the person is a fit for the company AND if the company is a fit for the person. Anything less is a disservice to each.

I am not suggesting that each party has a 50-50 split in who does the talking. There are times when the prospective employee needs to provide detail. After all, the person knows what they know and the company wants to find out what they know. Smart companies hire thinkers.

Because, in theory, the person doing the interviewing already knows a lot about the company. This is not always the case, but it?s a good theory. It?s also a great reason for interviewee to do their own research.

There are also times where the interviewee should expect detailed responses from the prospective employer to their questions.

However, Never Forget! It?s up to the interviewee to be prepared.

Do the Work ? Interviewees need to do their own homework so they can ask intelligent questions.

Why? Because the interviewee needs to know if this place is a place where they can work. Not just work ? but do their Best Work.

Interviews are NOT supposed to be monologues.

Interviews are conversations for the job seeker AND the job creator.

Modern and Smart Companies look for thinkers ? Not automatons

Even in roles where mundane tasks are the norm. There are always ways to improve a process and provide a better customer experience.

    Companies Pay for Experience

This is obvious, but most people do not start at the top of the organization. There are exceptions, but that?s usually what they are ? exceptions. Everyone else has to pay their dues. Those dues will involve both positive and negative experiences. That?s part of life. Those experiences expose flaws and pitfalls in plans and these are often the most powerful teaching experiences. Everyone has at least a few of these. Some have many more. The good news for potential new hires always have a few too.

Even Newbies have Something to Offer

Newly minted college graduates have skills and experiences too. Everything they have done plays a role in what they know and in what they can bring to the organization. These experiences should not be discounted and when possible should be leveraged to extend the company into new ways of thinking.

While it will not be common for new hires to start at the top there is nothing preventing a new hire from making an impact. Smart companies know this and they setup a nurturing environment to insure new hires can learn, grow and share. Whether they are straight out of school or whether they are transferring in from another department or company. Everyone has their own experiences and can make an impact. The smart companies are making it easy to utilize these experiences and grow their business.

Smart Businesses practice and perfect the art of Reciprocity in Interviewing.

    What do you think?

    • Are there any cases where monologue-only interviews work?
    • Should interviews be a reciprocal process?
    • What are your tips to insure interviews are a dialogue?

(AP) ? Top international financial officials wrapped up the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos warning that much needs to be done to stabilize the world economy.

Despite relief that the euro, for all its struggles, remains intact and the U.S. has so far managed to get through a crucial budget hurdle, the International Monetary Fund's managing director Christine Lagarde urged world leaders to "not relax."

Lagarde said Saturday that the 17 European Union countries that use the euro have to follow through on steps to keep the troubles at banks from burdening governments.

And she said U.S. officials have to "indicate very promptly" how they're going to deal with their ongoing budget dispute between President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress.

No link found between facial shape and aggression

Jan. 25, 2013 ? There is not significant evidence to support the association between facial shape and aggression in men, according to a study published by the journal PLOS ONE.

The professor Mireia Esparza, from the Anthropology Section of the Department of Animal Biology of the University of Barcelona, is part of the international research group who carried out this study. The research is coordinated by the experts Rolando Gonz?lez Jos?, from the Patagonic National Centre (CENPAT-CONICET, Argentina) and Jorge G?mez Vald?s, from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Sample of about 5,000 individuals from 94 worldwide human populations

The study provides new scientific data to reject the hypotheses that associate facial shape with antisocial and criminal behaviours, which attained its maximum splendour during the mid-19th century and lately have been revitalized. To carry out the study, researchers used a sample of 4,960 individuals from 94 worldwide populations. This large sample allowed to get a global estimation of facial shape and to develop an accurate analysis taking into account distinguishing traits. The experts based the research on the study of the fWHR -- facial width-to-height ratio -- as a possible predictor of aggressive behaviours in men populations.

According to the professor Mireia Esparza, "fWHR was used for two main reasons: on one hand, it is a good indicator of face shape and, on the other hand, it was used in those previous studies which established a correlation between higher fWHR scores and aggression. By this way, we were able to compare results without any bias caused by the use of any other indicator." Esparza contributed to this international study by reconstructing the genealogies of the Hallstatt population from biodemographic data to get genealogical information of the skulls studied and estimate the fitness of each individual analysed.

Craniofacial measurements and 2D and 3D cranial landmark coordinates

Research's results support previous studies which do not prove any relation between fWHR and aggression. "This study goes more deeply," remarks Mireia Esparza. "The methodology used is based on craniofacial measurements and 2D and 3D cranial landmark coordinates, so it provides us with more accurate results than other previous studies based on photographs analysis. Moreover, our research used a large sample of about 5,000 individuals from 94 worldwide populations, so we were able to carry out inter and intra-population comparisons."

"Finally -- she continues -- , two specific databases, one sample of male prisoners of the Mexico City Federal Penitentiary and one the skulls from the catholic church of Hallstaff, Austria, enabled a deeper analysis. The Hallstatt database was used to estimate the correlation among life history parameters, such as fitness or reproductive success, and skull shape traits; this sample has been essential to yield that there is not significant correlation between fWHR and male fitness in this population. The Mexican database demonstrated that fWHR is not significantly greater on those males involved in aggressive crimes in comparison with the general population."

Neither more violence, nor more reproductive success

According to the coordinators of the study, the experts Rolando Gonz?lez Jos? and Jorge G?mez Vald?s, "the social and political implications that this kind of non-contrasted adaptive hypotheses could have, may increase racial prejudices, discrimination and intolerance." Besides demonstrating that facial traits are a poor predictor of aggressive behaviours, the study also proves that fWHR is unrelated to sexual dimorphism. In other words, males who present higher fWHR values -- wide faces in comparison with their height -- do not have a greater reproductive success or show more violent behaviours. If males displaying higher fWHR scores achieved better fitness values, it would trigger a process of sexual selection focused on fWHR. "Our study proves that there is not statistical association between fWHR and male fitness, and that facial shape is not a good predictor of behaviour," concludes Esparza.

100-mph winds halt search for Antarctica plane

A plane carrying three Canadians has gone missing in Antarctica. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

Howling winds and snow grounded an effort Thursday to find a small plane missing in a mountainous area of Antarctica for more than two days, rescuers said.

The twin-engine plane, carrying three Canadian crew members, was about an hour into a flight from the U.S.-run Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station to an Italian research station at Terra Nova Bay, when its emergency beacon was heard by rescue officials in New Zealand at about 4 a.m. ET Tuesday.

The company that owns the plane,?Kenn Borek Air Ltd.?of Calgary, Alberta, said it was ?maintaining a respectful silence? until the fate of the plane and its crew was known.

The?Calgary Sun?newspaper identified one of those aboard the plane as Bob Heath of the Northwest Territories, calling him a ?star pilot? for Kenn Borek Air.

The newspaper quoted Heath?s wife Lucy Heath as saying she was ?worried? and ?waiting for news.?

A search plane spent about five hours circling over the site of the beacon, which is in a mountainous area, but heavy cloud cover hampered the search and then the weather got worse, officials said.

Winds have topped 100 mph and it was also snowing, Michael Flyger, spokesman for New Zealand?s?Rescue Coordination Center, said.

He added he hoped the next weather forecast "will bring good news,? enabling the search to continue.

    Five-day water supply
The beacon?s signal is coming from an area about 11,000 feet above sea level, Flyger said.

?It?s pretty mountainous terrain. It?s impossible to say whether it crashed or made an emergency landing or they had a mechanical problem and had to ditch the plane,? he said. ?At the moment we have a plane that?s not where it should be and a locator beacon is going off.?

The beacon can be switched on manually, but it also would begin transmitting if sensors detected a crash, Flyger said.

Despite the conditions in the area, there may be reason for optimism, he added.

?We do know that onboard the aircraft there was a significant amount of survival equipment -- heavy-duty mountain tents, enough water for three people for five days,? he said. ?They?ve certainly got the equipment to look after themselves.?

The National Science Foundation, which manages the U.S. Antarctic Program, said the plane was flying in support of Italian Antarctic research.

Searchers from the United States, Italy and Canada are assisting in New Zealand's efforts and have helicopters and airplanes ready to return to the site, Flyger said, adding that the the ideal scenario would be for a helicopter to either land or use a winch to bring up survivors.

?If conditions are good enough, hopefully we can land a short distance away and the team will walk to the crash site,? he said. ??There?s some frustration that the weather has been the way it?s been. The searchers are very keen to get in and crack on with the job."

?We?re very aware that not only are there people out there who need our help, but there are people ... wanting to know what?s going on. We hope to be able to give some good news.?

Booze is the curse of dieters | Canarian Weekly in Tenerife

PEOPLE trying to watch their weight should pay closer attention to how much alcohol they drink.

That?s because it is second only to fat in terms of calorie content, say experts.

World Cancer Research Fund, says alcohol makes up nearly 10% of total calorie intake among drinkers, so a large glass of wine will cost you the same 178 calories as eating two chocolate digestive biscuits.

And it will take you more than a half hour?s brisk walk to burn off.

As many of you will know from the regular newspaper bulletins we read, eating or drinking too many calories on a regular basis can lead to weight gain. And alcohol has been linked with breast, bowel, mouth and liver cancer.

But unlike food, alcoholic drinks have little or no nutritional value, and the ?empty calories? in drinks are often forgotten or ignored by dieters, says the Research Fund.

Kate Mendoza, head of its health information, said: ?Recent reports have shown that people are unaware of calories in drinks and don?t include them when calculating their daily consumption.?

Men need around 2,500 calories a day and women around 2,000, and Kate added:

?Cutting down on drinking can have a big effect on weight-loss, or maintaining a healthy weight. It can also reduce your risk of cancer.?

If you feel you can?t ? or don?t want to ? abstain entirely, there are ways to help you cut down, including smaller glass sizes, diluting alcohol with soda water or a low-calorie soft drink, alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and spending a few booze-free ?nights a week.

The Research Fund has produced an alcohol calorie calculator for different drinks, which shows approximately how much exercise is needed to do to burn off the alcohol calories consumed.

Government guidelines recommend men should not drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol daily, while women should limit themselves to 2-3 units.

A standard 175ml glass of wine contains about two units and a large 250ml glass contains about three.

And experts advise that if you have had a heavy drinking session, you should avoid booze for at least 48 hours.

(AP) ? When fire ravaged a Bangladeshi garment factory, killing 112 workers, dozens of their families did not even have a body to bury because their loved ones' remains were burned beyond recognition. Two months later, the same families have yet to receive any of the compensation they were promised ? not even their relatives' last paychecks.

An official with the country's powerful garment industry said DNA tests must first be conducted to confirm the losses of more than 50 families. He would not say why the families have not even received the wages their relatives had earned before the Nov. 24 blaze.

Many of the families desperately need money after losing their primary breadwinners in the fire at the Tazreen factory, which made clothes for Wal-Mart, Disney and other Western brands.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, a foreign supplier and the government promised to give the families of the dead 600,000 takas ($7,500) each, finance the education of the dead workers' children and pay the November salaries of both dead and surviving factory workers.

"I have got nothing. Nobody is saying anything," said Ansar, who uses one name and who lost his wife and daughter in the fire.

The 55-year-old is too ill to work himself. His 16-year-old son, who also worked at Tazreen, managed to escape but was traumatized by leaving his mother and sister behind "amid the darkness and ash," Ansar said at his home near the gutted factory.

The boy got a job at another factory but was unable to work because of his trauma.

"My son cannot sleep," Ansar said, sobbing. "He wakes up at midnight and then cries for a long time. The same thing happens to him every night."

Ansar has been unable to pay his rent for two months and fears that if he gets evicted and is forced to return to his home village in the impoverished north, he may never be compensated.

The fire drew international attention to the conditions that garment workers toil under in Bangladesh, where the $20 billion-a-year textile industry is incredibly powerful and politically connected.

The factory lacked emergency exits and its owner said only three floors of the eight-story building were legally built. Surviving employees said gates had been locked and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm went off.

A government panel concluded that the fire was sabotage. No one has been charged with setting the blaze, though three officials accused of locking in workers have been arrested.

Siddiqur Rahman, vice president of the garment association, said checks have been cut for families of the 59 victims whose bodies were identified. In addition, 80 workers injured in the fire received 100,000 takas each.

The other 53 people killed were burned beyond recognition and buried in unmarked graves, after samples of their DNA were taken. The garment industry demanded relatives provide their own DNA samples to ensure their claims were valid. Those samples are undergoing testing.

Rahman said the industry did not want to handle the claims haphazardly and said the money should be disbursed by the end of February.

"We will do whatever we have promised," he said.

He declined to explain why the victim's families had not yet received their November wages, which they would be entitled to whether the employee had died or not. Those wages are much smaller than the promised 600,000 takas; Ansar said his wife and daughter together earned around 10,500 takas a month as sewing machine operators.

When Ansar heard about the compensation, he gave the industry association photographs of his wife and daughter, their employee IDs and copies of their national identity cards. His son gave a blood sample for a DNA test days after the fire, but he has heard nothing.

"We went there; we met the BGMEA officials. They have asked us to wait. They don't make anything clear. They asked us to stay at home, not to go there," he said.

He has their phone numbers, but they don't answer when he calls, he said.

"I went there three times, but returned without anything," he said. "How long should we wait?"

"These families are very poor," said Mahmudul Sumon, an anthropologist from Jahangir Nagar University who is studying the fate of the victims' families. "They have lost their dear ones. Now they are suffering a lot, as many of the families have lost someone who was the main earner in the family."

Ruhul Hannan, who said his 35-year-old wife was killed in the blaze, sent his 18-year-old son for a DNA test, but so far he has received nothing, despite his pleas to the garment trade group.

"I am just waiting. They told me to wait until end of this month for the test result," he said.

Activists criticized the government, the garment industry and the factory for keeping important information secret, including the names of the victims of the fire and who has received compensation.

"Who died, who got compensated, who not? We don't have any clear idea," said Kalpona Akter of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity. "There should not be any plot to play hide-and-seek."

She said the major Western brands that produced clothing in the factory have a responsibility to come to Bangladesh to check on the compensation situation. She also raised concerns about the DNA testing process.

"We don't know why it's taking too much time. If time is required, fine, but there should be proper reasons ... that should be explained," she said.

Ahedul, a mechanic who lost his wife in the fire but could not identify her body, said he has no idea what is happening with his claim.

"I have been asked to stay calm by the BGMEA," said Ahedul, who uses only one name. "They told me they will come to me. I don't need to go to them."

'We're listening': The Republican Party wants your advice

CHARLOTTE, N.C.?The Republican Party is looking for advice.

To kick off this week's Republican National Committee's winter strategy session, which will focus in part on how to broaden the party's appeal to women and minority voters, the RNC on Thursday launched a website soliciting ideas and constructive criticism about what the party did wrong in 2012?and what it can do better over the next four years.

The site, which is part of its "Growth and Opportunity Project" created to analyze the last election, includes a wide-ranging survey seeking input on things such as whether Republicans should spend more or less time talking about the economy, national security, social issues or taxes. "Do you think the Republican Party shares your values?" it continues, after asking about demographics like race, age and gender. "Do you think the Republican Party listens to voters like you?"

The survey also asks about five areas where it needs improvement: "Diversity within the Party," "The Party's position on issues," "How the Party communicates with voters," "The process of selecting the best candidate" and "The Party's infrastructure and tactics used in campaigns."

Although Republicans dominated the 2010 midterm elections with gains in the House and Senate, Democrats retained control of the White House and Senate, and bolstered their minority in the House just two years later. President Barack Obama won 332 Electoral College votes and, perhaps more alarming for the GOP, enjoyed support from more than 70 percent of Hispanic and more than 95 percent of black voters.

Now, Republicans are keen to learn how to conduct better outreach to minorities and regain a foothold among a new pool of voters.

The RNC has tasked five co-chairs to lead the effort. The team, which consists of two white men, one white woman and one Hispanic woman, and a black man, will produce a report in the spring that summarizes their findings about last year's election and advice they received from RNC members and the public.

In a video accompanying the new site, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus urged voters to lend a hand in the effort.

"What do you think the party must do better? Where do we go in the future?" he asked. "We're listening."
