Dominant, promiscuous males have it good ? they don't have to invest in their young because they'll have plenty of offspring regardless, Gavrilets said.

Males that help feed and protect a smaller number of offspring can also be very successful, reproductively speaking ? but only if they can be sure who their children really are or if they provide for all the young in a group. Otherwise, the "providers" will be wasting their resources on offspring that are not their own, and there is ample opportunity for some males to cheat and not do their part.

Gavrilets wanted to see how we might have gotten from A to B. In his work published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, he used mathematical models to test factors that scientists believe may have driven the transition to pair-bonding. These include mate-guarding (males hang around the females they've mated with so others cannot mate with them too) and provisioning (males offer food or other resources to a female in return for sexual favors).

His number-crunching found that these factors alone were not enough to move a species away from promiscuity. The models did work, though, with a few adjustments.

First, he stopped assuming that all males would act the same. Instead, he tested what would happen if only the low-ranking males in the group offered food to females in return for mating opportunities. These weaker males had less to lose by switching strategies because they wouldn't get very far through fighting anyway.

The other key change was realizing that these low-ranking males would select faithful females.

"When I factored those things in, then things start to happen with the formation of pair bonds," Gavrilets said. Pair-bonding ultimately swept through almost the entire group.

For all the talk of the free-love 1960s, he added, "people don't realize that the most important sexual revolution for our species happened much, much earlier ? probably several million years earlier."

Owen Lovejoy, a biological anthropologist at Kent State University in Ohio, said the paper fits with his own thoughts on the evolution of monogamy.

Lovejoy, who edited Gavrilets' paper, said he had theorized for decades that monogamy could be traced to males providing food to females. In a 2009 research paper, he proposed that monogamy was already in place in a 4.4-million-year-old member of the human family, Ardipithecus ramidus, based on such features as a lack of large, slicing canine teeth that would signify a lot of male competition as well as an upright skeleton that would leave arms free to carry food.

But David Buss, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin and author of "The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating," said that although the paper offered a "plausible" explanation for what may have jump-started monogamy, it hugely simplified human sexual behavior.

Human mating behaviors, for men and women, are quite varied, he said ? including not just committed, long-term pairing but a smorgasbord of other strategies such as casual sex, serial monogamy, having a long-term mate with sexual partners on the side, and combinations thereof.

The study also fails to address the possibility that males didn't move straight from promiscuity to monogamy but instead to an intermediate pattern of polygyny ? guarding a number of females on a long-term basis, said primatologist Bernard Chapais of the University of Montreal.

Once polygyny was in place, it would have been much easier to move to monogamy without Gavrilets' assumptions about providing food and care, Chapais said.

Ex-Indiana coach and player, Watson dead at 88

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Former Indiana coach and player Lou Watson has died at the age of 88.

Scott Funeral Home in Jeffersonville, where Watson will be buried, said he died Thursday in Fairfax, Va.

Watson played for the Hoosiers from 1947-50, becoming its leading scorer at the time, and was first-team All-Big Ten in 1950. He was Indiana's head coach from 1966-71, guiding the Hoosiers to a Big Ten co-championship in 1967, and finishing with a 62-60 record. He became a special assistant to the athletic director in 1971, when Indiana hired Bob Knight as coach.

Watson retired in 1987.

The transmission is a PA Supercomp C-4 with Trans-Brake and a Neal Chance torque converter with 4800 RPM stall. It also features a Ford 9-inch axle with 3.73 gears and a Detroit Locker.

First glance, and someone is likely to say that this paint is an OEM factory Ford color, although, it is not. It?s a Viper Blue that looks mean with the OE flat black hood and chin spoiler. The entire undercarriage has been restored and fitted with all new original chrome parts. This ?69 Mach 1 has been fitted with Weld Prostars and 28?10.5 ET Drags. For night time cruisin?, a set of Magnum 500 wheels really set off the exterior.

A recent dyno performance, a first time dyno run with the previous Toploader 4 speed transmission put down 435RWHP and 429 lb. ft. of torque out of 91 octane. Not bad factoring in the ignition problems and fouling plugs. Pretty impressive despite the aforementioned problems! That equals out to be a 10.71 quarter mile at 122mph.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sen. Charles Schumer is urging airlines to allow families with young children to sit together without paying extra.

The New York Democrat is reacting to an Associated Press story last week detailing how families this summer are going to find it harder to sit together without paying fees that can add up to hundreds of dollars over the original ticket price.

"Children need access to their parents and parents need access to their children," Schumer said in a statement. "Unnecessary airline fees shouldn't serve as a literal barrier between mother and child."

Since last year, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and United Airlines have increased the percent of seats they set aside for elite frequent fliers or customers willing to pay extra. Fees for the seats ? on the aisle, next to windows, or with more legroom ?vary, but typically cost $25 extra, each way.

Airlines are searching for more ways to raise revenue to offset rising fuel prices. Airfare alone typically doesn't cover the cost of operating a flight. In the past five years, airlines have added fees for checked baggage, watching TV, skipping security lines and boarding early. Fees for better seats have existed for a few years but have proliferated in the last 12 months.

Schumer is asking Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to issue rules preventing airlines from charging parents more to sit next to kids. He is also asking the industry's trade group, Airlines for America, to persuade carriers to voluntarily waive the fee for families.

"A parent should not have to pay a premium to supervise and protect their child on an airplane," Schumer wrote in a letter expected to be sent Sunday to Nicholas E. Calio, the trade group's president.

The airlines say they try to keep parents and young children together. Gate agents will often ask passengers to voluntarily swap seats but airlines say they can't guarantee adjacent seats unless families book early or pay extra for the preferred seats.

Airlines have resisted past efforts by the government to further regulate them. Their argument: The cost associated with new rules would cripple an industry already struggling with thin profit margins.

Two years ago, Schumer got five big airlines to pledge that they wouldn't charge passengers to stow carry-on bags in overhead bins. The promise came after Spirit Airlines became the first U.S. carrier to levy such a fee.

Activists waging a national war on coal have turned their sights on the Pacific Northwest, targeting proposed shipping terminals in Washington and Oregon that would export coal to?China.

They?re aggressively lobbying federal officials to change how these projects are evaluated. If they succeed, our economy could become a casualty of the war on?coal.

Currently, such projects undergo a rigorous environmental review known as an Environmental Impact Statement involving months or even years of public hearings and analysis by federal, state and county regulators. The EIS for each project must also examine the cumulative impacts of other potential activities in the?area.

But opponents want to insert a second, more expansive layer of environmental review, which some are calling a Programmatic EIS, which would have to be completed before each individual project EIS could begin. This additional review would include all of the Washington and Oregon proposals and expand to analyze their potential ?cumulative? economic and environmental impacts across the region, the United States or perhaps the?world.

A PEIS is historically reserved for assessing the broad national impacts of a federal action or a new federal policy. But the activists want to apply that same scope of review to a local shipping?terminal.

For example, what would be the collective impacts on air, water, wildlife and so on, if all the proposals are built? And what are the additional environmental impacts of the coal mines in Wyoming and Montana? What are the additional environmental impacts along the rail lines from the mines to the terminals? How about the environmental impacts of shipping the coal to Asia? Or the global impact of Asia burning U.S.?coal??

Opponents argue that all of these issues should be part of an additional environmental?review.

Couldn?t happen? Think?again.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, the Washington state Department of Ecology, the Region 10 office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the city of Seattle and the Yakama Nation are among those urging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to change the rules. They want the Corps to conduct a special analysis of the so-called cumulative effects of all the proposed?terminals.

Even if this extra layer of analysis didn?t ultimately block the projects, it would delay them for years. The opponents? presumed goal is to create delay and legal gridlock, making it so difficult, time-consuming and expensive that the backers ultimately give?up.

Call it ?death by a thousand?lawyers.?

Eric Johnson, executive director of the Washington Public Ports Association, agrees that these projects should undergo rigorous review. ?However,? he notes, ?this review should be of the project itself, not of the overall system of commerce across our region, the United States, or as urged by some commenters, the entire?world.?

Johnson warns that requiring an additional layer of analysis for these projects would set a dangerous precedent in a state where one of every three jobs is linked to trade. ?If this precedent is applied to all products imported and exported through our port transportation system, we will bog our project review timeline down in needless?process.?

Consider the?possibilities.

Want to expand an aircraft manufacturing facility? Why not require the study of the pollution impacts of all of the manufacturer?s subcontractors worldwide? Why not examine the greenhouse gas effects of jet engine exhaust around the?globe?

Would it ever go this far? No one knows for sure, but would you want to take that?chance??

For employers trying to decide whether to locate or expand their business in the Northwest, the uncertainty is enough to convince them to take their business ? and their jobs ??elsewhere.

Sycamore not ready to pull trigger on Talbots deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? The women's clothier Talbots Inc. said Friday that a deadline expired without a deal in its exclusive talks about being acquired by a private equity firm and that it will actively pursue other options.

Its shares plunged by more than a third in morning trading.

The retailer said that Sycamore Partners told the Massachusetts-based company that "it is not prepared to execute a transaction at this time." Sycamore had previously indicated it would pay $3.05 per share for Talbots. The end of the talks sent Talbots' stock down $1.05, or 41 percent, to close at $1.51 Friday.

The two companies had been in exclusive talks on a potential $211 million buyout, with Talbots extending the discussions a second time earlier this week. The latest deadline was Thursday.

Sycamore offered to buy Talbots for $3.05 per share earlier this month. That's up from its prior offer of $3 per share for the Hingham, Mass. company, which it made in December.

Talbots said it is still open to pursuing a deal with Sycamore at the $3.05 per share purchase price. But it added that since its exclusive talks with Sycamore have ended, Talbots will actively explore other strategic options.

Talbots, which sells women's clothing and accessories, has struggled for some time and posted annual losses for four of the five past years.

The company tried to reverse its downward spiral by cutting jobs, closing stores, lowering inventory, limiting marketing spending and trimming employee hours. But Talbots continues to look for other solutions to its woes. Its management has said it is considering all its strategic alternatives and is seeking a new leader for the company.

Talbots also reported on Friday that its fiscal first-quarter net income rose to $1.09 million, or 2 cents per share, from $739,000, or 1 cent per share, a year ago. Excluding restructuring charges and other items, earnings from continuing operations were 9 cents per share.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected a loss of 2 cents per share on revenue of $272.5 million.
