Chronic Bowel Disease Drugs Linked to Skin Cancer Risk (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Nov. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Some patients with inflammatory bowel disease may be at increased risk for skin cancer due to their use of immunosuppressant drugs to treat the intestinal disorder, according to the results of two new studies.

The studies, published in the November issue of the journal Gastroenterology, noted that immunosuppressants are commonly used to treat patients with irritable bowel disease, or IBD. Currently, there are no specific recommendations for skin cancer screening in IBD patients.

In one study, French researchers led by Dr. Laurent Peyrin-Biroulet, of University Hospital of Nancy, found that both past and present use of a widely used class of immunosuppressants called thiopurines significantly increased the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer in irritable bowel disease patients.

"The increased risk of skin cancer that we found in our study was observed in all patients, even before the age of 50 years. As expected, this risk increased with age. All patients with inflammatory bowel disease currently receiving or having previously received thiopurines should protect their skin from UV radiation and receive regular dermatologic screening, regardless of their age," Peyrin-Biroulet said in a news release from the American Gastroenterological Association.

Non-melanoma skin cancer includes basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which are the most common cancers diagnosed in North America.

In the second study, Canadian researchers found that certain people with inflammatory bowel disease, such as men with a form of the disorder known as Crohn's disease, may already be at increased risk for basal cell carcinoma, and the use of thiopurines increases this risk.

"All individuals should be protecting themselves against skin cancer," lead author Dr. Harminder Singh, of the University of Manitoba, said in the news release. "But, it is especially important that physicians stress the need to be extra vigilant about skin care with their inflammatory bowel disease patients, especially among those exposed to immunosuppressants such as thiopurines."

However, Singh and his colleagues added that there was only a small absolute increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer seen in the study, which may not warrant stopping treatment with thiopurines in IBD patients who need the immunosuppressants to control their disease.

PFT: Colts to start Orlovsky at QB vs. Pats

Green Bay Packers full back John Kuhn spikes the ball after scoring a touch down against the Detroit Lions during the second half of their NFL football game in DetroitReuters

1. Packers (No. 1; 11-0):? Any sounds you hear coming from South Florida won?t be coming from a cork leaving a bottle of champagne.

2. Ravens (No. 6; 8-3):? Given their history of stumbling against bad teams, the next four ?easy? games could be the hardest on the schedule.

3. Steelers (No. 3; 8-3):? The Steelers nearly experienced ?choke-like symptoms? on Sunday night.

4. Patriots (No. 4; 8-3):? The Pats are playing just well enough to fail to fulfill the expectations they?ll create in December.

5.? Saints (No. 5; 8-3):? They?ll be fine until they have to play on the road in the postseason.

6.? 49ers (No. 2; 9-2):? Unless and until the 49ers lose in January, Jim Harbaugh likely won?t be rooting for his brother in the playoffs

7. Texans (No. 9; 8-3):? Wins in the playoffs could be hard to come by without a quarterback who has some playoff experience.

8. Cowboys (No. 11; 7-4):? If the Cowboys keep it up, Tony Romo will have a chance to commit another game-altering turnover in January.

9. Raiders (No. 12; 7-4):? Forget Carson Palmer and Darren McFadden; Shane Lechler and Sebastian Janikowski could be the keys to a deep postseason run for the Raiders.

10. Bears (No. 7; 7-4):? Caleb Hanie?s hiney soon will be back on the bench.

11. Falcons (No. 13; 7-4):? They need to develop a killer instinct if they want to make it back to the playoffs.

12. Lions (No. 8; 7-4):? In fairness to Suh, no one ever specifically told him that stomping was frowned upon.

13. Bengals (No. 14; 7-4):? In the first NFL season since 1997 without T.O. and Randy Moss, the Bengals have a wideout who could be better than both of them.

14. Broncos (No. 15; 6-5):? Tebowmania will be very dangerous in a single-elimination tournament.

15. Jets (No. 16; 6-5):? Beating the Bills was, ultimately, the equivalent of delaying the inevitable.

16. Titans (No. 17; 6-5):? If Chris Johnson without his burst can rush for 190 yards, he could go for 400 yards once he can explode again.

17. Giants (No. 10; 6-5):? Bill Cowher?s plans are about to change.

18. Eagles (No. 18; 4-7):? DeSean Jackson dropped that pass because he prematurely launched into his ?hide under the bed? touchdown celebration.

19. Seahawks (No. 19; 4-7):? The 12th man apparently took a day off.

20. Buccaneers (No. 20; 4-7):? The ?toughest . . . schedule . . . ever? excuse went out the window in Nashville.

21. Bills (No. 21; 5-6):? So if Stevie Johnson had scored a touchdown against the Eagles, would he have gotten on all fours and barked like a dog?

22. Cardinals (No. 26; 4-7):? This team may not be as far away from contending as it appears.

23. Chiefs (No. 22; 4-7):? This team may not be as far away from contending as it appears.

24. Chargers (No. 23; 4-7):? This team may not be as far away from contending as it appears.

25. Dolphins (No. 24; 3-8):? This team may not be as far away from contending as it appears.

26. Browns (No. 25; 4-7):? And the streak ends at four.

27. Panthers (No. 29; 3-8):? Cam Newton had flashbacks to the national title game, given that his opponents in Indy were roughly as good as the 2010 Oregon team.

28. Redskins (No. 30; 4-7):? Back-to-back home games against the Jets and Patriots could make or break Mike Shanahan for 2012.

29. Jaguars (No. 27; 3-8):? Though it?s not clear who the next coach will be, it?s safe to say the next coach will have no offers to coach other NFL teams.

30. Vikings (No. 28; 2-9):? So if the Vikings have another 3-13 season, does Bud Grant come back again?

31. Rams (No. 31; 2-9):? Is it possible for the offensive rookie of the year to become a bust?

32. Colts (No. 32; 0-11):? ?If we fire the defensive coordinator, maybe people won?t think we?re trying to get the first pick in the draft.?

Mexican trucker gets 16 years for drug tunnels (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? A Mexican trucker was sentenced Monday to nearly 16 years in prison for his role in two major drug tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border, marking the end of one of the most prominent cases since the secret passages began turning up about a decade ago.

Daniel Navarro, 45, apologized in a soft voice to his family and a federal judge for his role in tunnels that linked warehouses in San Diego and Tijuana and resulted in seizures of a combined 52 tons of marijuana. The long passages raided in November 2010 were lit, ventilated and equipped with rail cars.

"This defendant is a significant, significant player," said Sherri Hobson, an assistant U.S. attorney. "This defendant is right in the middle of it."

Navarro, who pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to distribute marijuana, knew where the tunnels were and had keys to one warehouse, Hobson said. He was in frequent contact with one driver who was caught with nearly 10 tons of marijuana in his truck and told authorities that he previously worked with Navarro on large loads. Navarro led another driver on the freeway who was arrested with 14 tons of marijuana in his truck.

Holding the warehouse keys shows Navarro was a "trusted, trusted person" in the tunnel operations, said Hobson, who sought a 30-year prison sentence.

Defense attorney Victor Sherman acknowledged Navarro had a part in both tunnels but sought to play down his role. He asked for a 10-year sentence.

"There's no evidence that he's a manager or supervisor of anybody," he said.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns sentenced the Mexicali native to 15 years and eight months in prison. He said Navarro was "up to his hips" in smuggling the huge marijuana loads, but the sentence was barely half the length that prosecutors wanted.

Navarro became a legal U.S. resident in 1999 and worked as a trucker in Southern California, his attorney said. He worked construction briefly in Tulsa, Okla., last year.

As U.S. authorities have tightened their noose on land over the last decade, tunnels have emerged as a major tack to smuggle marijuana.

More than 70 passageways have been found on the border since October 2008, surpassing the number of discoveries in the previous six years. Many are clustered around San Diego, California's Imperial Valley and Nogales, Ariz.

Royals reach deal with former Dodgers closer Broxton (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract with former Los Angeles Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton, the American League team said Tuesday.

The deal is pending a physical exam of the right-hander, who missed most of the 2011 Major League Baseball season due to bone spurs in his pitching elbow and had arthroscopic surgery in September.

"We are delighted to add someone as talented as Jonathan to our bullpen," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said in a report posted on the team's website.

"He will be used in a setup role to closer Joakim Soria and will help solidify what we feel is a young and talented bullpen."

Broxton, who saved 58 games for the Dodgers in 2009 and 2010 and was an All-Star both seasons, was 1-2 with a 5.68 earned run average in 14 appearances last season.

Report: Herbicide atrazine spurs reproductive problems in many creatures

Monday, November 28, 2011

An international team of researchers has reviewed the evidence linking exposure to atrazine ? an herbicide widely used in the U.S. and more than 60 other nations ? to reproductive problems in animals. The team found consistent patterns of reproductive dysfunction in amphibians, fish, reptiles and mammals exposed to the chemical.

Atrazine is the second-most widely used herbicide in the U.S. More than 75 million pounds of it are applied to corn and other crops, and it is the most commonly detected pesticide contaminant of groundwater, surface water and rain in the U.S.

The new review, compiled by 22 scientists studying atrazine in North and South America, Europe and Japan, appears in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

The researchers looked at studies linking atrazine exposure to abnormal androgen (male hormone) levels in fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals and studies that found a common association between exposure to the herbicide and the "feminization" of male gonads in many animals.

The most robust findings are in amphibians, said Val Beasley, a University of Illinois emeritus professor of comparative biosciences and co-author of the review. At least 10 studies found that exposure to atrazine feminizes male frogs, sometimes to the point of sex reversal, he said.

Beasley's lab was one of the first to find that male frogs exposed to atrazine in the wild were more likely to have both male and female gonadal tissue than frogs living in an atrazine-free environment. And in a 2010 study, Tyrone Hayes, a professor of integrative biology at the University of California at Berkeley and lead author of the review, reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that atrazine exposure in frogs was associated with "genetic males becoming females and functioning as females," Beasley said.

"And this is not at extremely high concentrations," he said. "These are at concentrations that are found in the environment."

The new review describes the disruptions of hormone function and sexual development reported in studies of mammals, frogs, fish, reptiles and human cells exposed to the herbicide. The studies found that atrazine exposure can change the expression of genes involved in hormone signaling, interfere with metamorphosis, inhibit key enzymes that control estrogen and androgen production, skew the sex ratio of wild and laboratory animals (toward female) and otherwise disrupt the normal reproductive development and functioning of males and females.

"One of the things that became clear in writing this paper is that atrazine works through a number of different mechanisms," Hayes said. "It's been shown that it increases production of (the stress hormone) cortisol. It's been shown that it inhibits key enzymes in steroid hormone production while increasing others. It's been shown that it somehow prevents androgen from binding to its receptor."

The review also consolidates the evidence that atrazine undermines immune function in a variety of animals, in part by increasing cortisol.

"Cortisol is a nonspecific response to chronic stress," Beasley said. "But guess what? Wildlife in many of today's habitats are stressed a great deal of the time. They're stressed because they're crowded into little remnant habitats. They're stressed because there's not enough oxygen in the water because there are not enough plants in the water (another consequence of herbicide use). They're stressed because of other contaminants in the water. And the long-term release of cortisol causes them to be immuno-suppressed."

There also are studies that show no effects ? or different effects ? in animals exposed to atrazine, Beasley said. "But the studies are not all the same. There are different species, different times of exposure, different stages of development and different strains within a species." All in all, he said, the evidence that atrazine harms animals, particularly amphibians and other creatures that encounter it in the water, is compelling.

"I hope this will stimulate policymakers to look at the totality of the data and ask very broad questions," Hayes said. "Do we want this stuff in our environment? Do we want ? knowing what we know ? our children to drink this stuff? I would think the answer would be no."

Legal Bludgeons Don't Belong in PR World

PR Society of America is seeking a new definition of PR but it must look at its own house first for a clue to what has happened to PR. It?s got nothing to do with Twitter, LinkedIn or the web.

A camel known as the law put its nose into the PRS tent and now the whole camel is in the tent causing havoc.

Latest evidence is the remark by VP-PR Arthur Yann that the Society is ?well within our rights to ban any and all reporters from attending? (the Assembly).

This may be good law but it?s bad PR. For one thing, it shows that the PRS press boycott is not just against the O?Dwyer Co. but the entire PR trade press. No reporter covered the 2011 Assembly.

PRS?s reactionary governance policies are in contrast to those of the Canadian PR Society, whose annual general meeting is not only open to the press but is audiocast live on the web for anyone to see. A transcript is then provided. CPRS posts its audit on the web (PDF) and just voted a dues increase of $30 to $250 in which all 1,600 members cast their votes by regular mail. Dan Tisch of Argyle Communications, Toronto, is on the redefining PR committee.

PRS Lacks Staff for ?PR for PR? Program

The presence of only three PR pros on a staff of more than 50 means there?s a shortage of people to carry out any ?PR for PR? program. Yann does not address business groups and he acknowledges in an entry on thegoodthebadthespin.com that COO Bill Murray has spasmodic dysphonia, a disorder that results in a halting, choking quality of speech. This may be a reason that Murray rarely (if ever) appears in public.

Another legal bludgeon was the opinion from Venable that PRS had the right to cancel the in-person Assembly if the 2011 Assembly did not pass a $30 dues hike.

Such an atrocity, mashing basic principles of democracy as well as Robert?s Rules, would be another example of bad PR.

Boycott Debate Shut

Similarly, Yann had the legal right to shut down a PRS blog debate on the press boycott after only four business days (Oct. 26-Nov. 1), but that violated web practice of hosting debates indefinitely.

Sixteen of 18 posts favored the boycott.

A more balanced debate took place in LinkedIn Groups as hosted by newsroomink.com.

Twenty-one of the 29 entries criticized PR?s press boycott. Four of the comments are by Yann himself including the one where he says PRS is within its ?rights? to ban all reporters from the Assembly.

The Society is not legally bound to provide its IRS Form 990 (with pay of the top eight staffers) to the Assembly and it hasn?t for the past three years. But that?s also bad PR. PRS follows the letter of the law but violates its spirit which is that members have the right to know what their association executives are making. COO Bill Murray and the board refuse to divulge terms of his new three-year contract starting in January.

Is PRS a ?Private Organization??

The Society has argued for years that it is a private organization and none of anyone?s business except its members.

This is a question we?re putting to someone uniquely qualified to answer it ? T. Barton Carter, chair of the Dept. of Communication of Boston University who is also a practicing lawyer specializing in communication law.

A member of the department is PR?s most visible educator, Donald Wright, PR professor and editor of the online PR Journal of PRS. His extensive credentials include serving as president of the International PR Assn. in 2004.
Wright is one of those referenced (as editor of PRJ) in the 23 pages of PRS?s complaints against this writer.

His name is not used and we wonder if PRS got his permission before making him a part of this reckless document. Supposedly we ?threatened? Wright?s relationship with BU by complaining to BU president Robert Brown about the ?anti-information, anti-intellectual, anti-democracy, anti-press and anti-member? regime at PRS and wondering how Wright and BU could be connected with this.

We are now also taking up our case with Carter and reiterate those charges, all of which have been documented.

Nearly a dozen other names are left out of the 23 pages of charges against us although otherwise identified and we wonder if permission was sought from them? They include Del Galloway, Phil Bonaventura, Mike Cherenson, Brandi Boatner, Gary McCormick, Cindy Badger, and Mickey Nall.

Carter, with his feet in both the law?s camp and PR?s camp, might provide an answer.

The legal axe is being swung wildly at PRS and legal?s influence is also evident in a lot of what goes on in PR today.

Legal monitors any input from reporters at organizations and checks anything before it goes out. PR pros are heavily scripted.

Definition Must Address Legal Issue

PRS has cast a net far and wide (although reporters are not invited) in an attempt to craft a new definition of PR in the face of the internet, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

But there?s no use coming up with a new definition of PR if PRS is not going to live up to its current Code that promises the ?free flow? of information, ?fair? treatment of the press and others, being ?honest and accurate in all communications,? ?reveal all information needed for responsible decision-making,? ?preserve intellectual property rights in the marketplace,? ?avoid deceptive practices,? and ?act promptly to correct erroneous communications for which the member is responsible.?

Yann has posted several places that the Society of Professional Journalists wants this writer to quit because of violations of the SPJ Code. SPJ wants me to quit because it doesn?t want to get involved in the ?situation? between PRS and the O?Dwyer Co. Its statement has nothing to do with ethics. The ?situation? is that PRS sold hundreds of thousands of copies of authors? materials without their permission and it?s about time a PRS board took responsibility for this.

Romenesko Tweets O?Dwyer Boycott

Journalist Jim Romenesko tweeted to his 40,000+ followers Nov. 22 that ?PR man Jack O?Dwyer says PRSA has circulated a 23-page list of charges against him? (linking to that day?s O?Dwyer blog on the Society seeking a new definition of PR).

PRS staffer Keith Trivitt was the next tweet denying any such circulation. Said Trivitt: The Society ?did not ?circulate? as you state. We mailed the letter directly to Mr. O?Dwyer. No circulation by us.?

That?s partially true in that the 23-pages were initially sent to us. PRS thought that if we published it first, they would get off any legal hook. But in the weeks that have followed PRS has distributed the 23 pages to numerous places including since Oct. 26 its own website, PR Watch, Talentzoo.com, Jane Genova?s blog, and newsroomink.com.

Yann posted on the Genova blog Oct. 27 that ?the Society?s response details the abusive, unprofessional and unethical behavior of Mr. O?Dwyer towards the Society.? The entry contained a link to the 23 pages.

Trivitt should correct his false statement if he wants to abide by the PRS Code.

Fiske Tweeted About Father?s Death

While exploring on Twitter, we came upon this post by chair Rosanna Fiske (@fiskey) on Nov. 13: ?The entire family is together today to honor my dad who died a year ago, to share all our great memories and celebrate his life.?

Fiske provided this information about her father via Twitter to her 1,850 followers and anyone else who chooses to access her Twitter page.

She has also written about her photojournalist father in biographical materials on the web, citing him as the reason she went into journalism and then PR.
For some reason, she declines to provide further information about him.

Bad law Is Being Practiced

I wouldn?t mind good law being practiced at PRS. But this is bad law.

Robert?s Rules, for instance, provide that if a group does not have a specific bar against proxies, the adoption of RR is sufficient to satisfy any state law that requires a specific ban on proxies.

PRS uses RR as its parliamentary guide but both PRS and Venable ignore the RR rule on proxies.

If members could afford their own lawyer there is no doubt some members would fight this legally.

Another RR rule that is ignored is that if a group has an ?assembly,? such as PRS?s, that assembly ?is the highest authority within such a society? (page 6-7 and 549).

PRS?s Assembly delegates have been told numerous times never to tell the board what to do.

A 2006 attempt by the Central Michigan chapter to copy governance of ABA and AMA was trounced with no other chapter publicly supporting it. The AMA says its House of Delegates is its ?principal policy-making body? while the ABA says its delegates are ?the ultimate governing body of the Association.?

No mention was made in any PRS media of the proposal from April of that year to the Assembly.

That?s how PRS practices the ?free flow of information.?

Such practices provide a bad example to its 31,000 regular and student members. Journalists should be part of the committee and members should meet face-to-face including sessions open to the public.

PRS supports information that is ?truthful? but truth in a democracy is obtained by forging it in the hot cauldron of public debate.

While some PR pros see the internet and social media as a grand opportunity for them, others are hearing a death rattle for what was once the prime function of PR?providing information.

A PR pro quoted on Peter Himler?s blog said: ?Those you?re hoping to engage have a myriad of other credible sources for story ideas or actionable information. We simply no longer serve nor are we perceived as the primary bearers of timely, accurate and actionable information. Google, Twitter and Facebook have seen to that.? http://www.theflack.blogspot.com/

Broadway's Spidey turns two, breaks house record (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Lending some credence to the old maxim that there's no such thing as bad publicity, the infamous Broadway musical "Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark" has broken house records on the eve of its second anniversary.

The $70 million show, which was plagued by a series of stunt-related cast injuries in its early days, not to mention a record-length preview period which eventually brought director Julie Taymor's ouster, broke the Foxwood Theatre's house record last week, grossing $2.07 million at the box office.

Despite its troubled history -- or perhaps in part because of the media attention paid to it -- the show, which began previews on November 28, 2010, has consistently played to packed houses.

Since its June opening, which drew fairly scathing reviews even after a post-Taymor overhaul, more than 600,000 people have filled seats at the cavernous 42nd St. theater.

"We were staunchly committed to getting this show open and to doing whatever we could so that 'Spider-man' would be in New York City for this year and those to come," producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah Harris said in a statement, adding they were thrilled with "the incredible response from our fantastic audiences at each and every performance."

Taymor, who won a Tony award for the still-running hit "The Lion King," spent years working on "Spider-man." Earlier this month, she sued the show's producers in federal court accusing them of copyright infringement and breach of contract. Her lawyers claim "unauthorized and unlawful use of Taymor's copyrighted written works" by the producers of "Spider-Man."

"Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark", with music by U2's Bono and The Edge, closed for three weeks in April for a major revamp by a new director and officially opened in June.

'Twilight' shines on with $42 million weekend

The latest "Twilight" movie has plenty of daylight left with a second-straight win at the weekend box office.

  1. More Entertainment stories
    1. Three judges are left standing on 'X Factor'

Paula Abdul became the first judge to zero out on ?X Factor? when Lakoda Rayne got the fewest number of votes on Wednesday.

    2. Bachmann: Fallon song choice was sexist
    3. J.Lo didn't drive that Fiat 'round the block
    4. 'Breaking Bad' boss doesn't know how it'll end
    5. 'Arthur Christmas' a jolly new holiday tradition

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" took in $42 million domestically over the three-day weekend and $62.3 million in the five-day Thanksgiving boom time from Wednesday to Sunday. That raised its domestic total to $221.3 million, while the Summit Entertainment release added $71.5 million overseas to lift the international total to $268 million and the worldwide take to $489.3 million.

Debuting at No. 2 was Disney's family flick "The Muppets," with $29.5 million for the three-day weekend and $42 million over the five-day holiday haul.

Three other family films rounded out the top-five: the Warner Bros. sequel "Happy Feet Two" at No. 3 with a three-day total of $13.4 million and $18.4 million for five days; Sony's animated comedy "Arthur Christmas" at No. 4 with $12.7 million for three days and $17 million for five days; and Paramount's epic adventure "Hugo" at No. 5 with $11.4 million for three days and $15.4 million for five days.

Between "Breaking Dawn" and the blitz of family films, analysts thought Hollywood had a shot at record revenue over the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the year's busiest weekends at movie theaters. But viewers did not come in anywhere close to record numbers.

"I was pretty surprised by this. I just thought this was the perfect combination of films in the marketplace," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "Maybe there was just too much out there."

Domestic revenue totaled $234 million from Wednesday to Sunday, well below the $273 million record set two years ago, when "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" led the Thanksgiving weekend, according to Hollywood.com. Receipts also fell short of last Thanksgiving's $264 million haul, when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" finished on top.

Studio executives concede it's growing harder to lure fans into theaters given all the portable games, devices and other electronics people have to fill up their entertainment time. A so-so Thanksgiving on a weekend with such a good variety of movies could be a sign that Hollywood simply has to live with diminished expectations.

"I don't know that choice is ever a bad thing, and in terms of a weekend for families, this is one of the best," said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, which brought "The Muppets" back to the big-screen after a 12-year absence. "The challenge is breaking through and being relevant and meaningful and fresh enough to take the more finicky customers and have them choose you."

Disney reported that "The Muppets" drew a good mix of families and couples without children who fondly remember Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang on "The Muppet Show." The film stars Jason Segel and Amy Adams as fans helping to reunite the Muppets for a telethon to save their decaying studio.

"Breaking Dawn" was holding close to the pattern set by "New Moon" two years ago, though domestic revenues were off slightly. Factoring in higher ticket prices since "New Moon," the audience shrank even further for "Breaking Dawn."

"I think the audience has changed a bit. Everybody's grown a little older, and I guess we lose a few of our patrons to age," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit.

With no big new releases coming next weekend, though, "Breaking Dawn" has a shot at making up some ground, Fay said.

"Happy Feet Two" has failed to live up to its Academy Award-winning predecessor, a blockbuster that took in nearly $200 million domestically. The sequel about dancing penguins has managed just $43.8 million since opening Nov. 18, a 10-day total that barely matches the opening-weekend gross of the 2006 original.

"Arthur Christmas," from the British animation unit Aardman that made "Chicken Run" and the "Wallace and Gromit" films, has long-haul potential because of its good reviews and holiday story line. The voice cast includes James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie and Jim Broadbent in a Christmas Eve romp about a child's present that falls through the cracks in Santa Claus' high-tech delivery operation.

"To have the one picture that really is kind of carrying the torch as a Christmas picture really bodes well for the future," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony.

Distributor Paramount has similar long-term hopes for Martin Scorsese's "Hugo," which also has great reviews. Based on a children's book, "Hugo" follows the adventures of an orphan boy who tends the clocks in a Paris train station and becomes caught up in unraveling a mystery that connects a surly old man (Ben Kingsley) and a mechanical automaton the youth is trying to repair.

Paramount scaled back "Hugo" from a full wide release over Thanksgiving, opening it in 1,277 theaters, about a third the number for most other top movies. The studio plans to roll the film out more gradually, spreading its marketing budget over the coming weeks to capitalize on the critical word of mouth and potential awards buzz leading up to the Jan. 24 Oscar nominations.

Critics have praised "Hugo" for Scorsese's dazzling use of 3-D. Unlike 3-D fatigue that set in for some other recent movies, whose 3-D business dipped below half of total revenues, "Hugo" audiences have been willing to pay an extra few dollars to see it in three dimensions. About 75 percent of the film's revenue came from 3-D screenings, according to Paramount.

Weekend box office

  1. Totals for Nov. 25-27

    1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1," $42 million.

    2. "The Muppets," $29.5 million.

    3. "Happy Feet Two," $13.4 million.

    4. "Arthur Christmas," $12.7 million.

    5. "Hugo," $11.4 million.

    6. "Jack and Jill," $10.3 million.

    7. "Immortals," $8.8 million.

    8. "Puss in Boots," $7.5 million.

    9. "Tower Heist," $7.3 million.

    10. "The Descendants," $7.2 million.

"People are reading the reviews that say, 'You've got to see it in 3-D,' and they're going out and voting with their dollars," said Don Harris, head of distribution at Paramount.

In narrower release, the Marilyn Monroe drama "My Week with Marilyn" opened solidly with a $1.8 million weekend and $2.1 million since opening Wednesday. The Weinstein Co. release stars Michelle Williams as Monroe during her tumultuous time filming Laurence Olivier's "The Prince and the Showgirl."

Playing in 244 theaters, "My Week with Marilyn" had a weekend average of $7,266 a cinema, compared with a $10,330 average in 4,066 locations for "Breaking Dawn."

Another Weinstein release, the black-and-white silent film "The Artist," had a big opening in limited release with a three-day haul of $210,414 in just four New York City and Los Angeles theaters. That gave the film an average of $52,604 a theater.

"The Artist" traces the fall of a silent-film star (Jean Dujardin) and the rise of a new screen sensation (Berenice Bejo) as talking pictures take over in the 1920s and '30s. The acclaimed film gradually expands to nationwide release during the buildup to the Oscar nominations.

O's?might trade former hot prospect

Chris Tillman was a second-round pick of the Mariners back in the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft. He posted?intriguing?strikeout numbers at a few different levels of Single-A between 2006-2007 before being dealt in an offseason trade to the Orioles in 2008.

That?s when his profile really began rising.

Tillman registered a 3.18 ERA and 154/65 K/BB ratio across 135 2/3 innings for the O?s Triple-A affiliate in 2008, and was rated 22nd on Baseball America?s Top 100 prospect rankings heading into the 2009 season.?In July of 2009, he made his major league debut against the Royals to a good degree of hype.

But it?s been mostly downhill since then for Tillman, and now Roch Kubatko of MASN is hearing that Baltimore ?would be willing to? trade the young righty this offseason if they?re able to find interest.

The 6-foot-5 Tillman?posted a 5.52 ERA and 46/25 K/BB ratio in 62 innings this year in the majors and a 5.87 ERA over 53 2/3 innings in 2010. Even on an O?s roster that is short on reliable starting arms, he?s a longshot to land a spot in the 2012 Opening Day rotation. So rather than asking the 23-year-old to?transition?into a reliever, thus stunting his long-term potential, the O?s might go ahead and try to find him a new team.

Occupy movement targets Black Friday; 10 arrested

KHNL-TV

Occupy Honolulu protesters demonstrate at a Wal-Mart store in Honolulu early Friday,

By msnbc.com staff

Updated 2:57 p.m. ET: The Occupy Wall Street movement is taking its anti-corporate directly to Black Friday shoppers.

Ten Occupy Oklahoma City protesters were arrested Friday morning after a protest at a Wal-Mart store in Del City, Okla., The Oklahoman reported.?

Del City police Capt. Jody Suit told the newspaper that officers working off-duty security jobs at the store called for assistance about 2 a.m. because the protesters were causing disturbances in the back of the store.

One of those arrested, Mark Faulk, 55, of Oklahoma City told the newspaper that he was filming the group's "mike check" ? in which one member of the group shouts something and then the others in the group repeat what the speaker said ? when??Del City police ran and started tackling people from behind.?

Police Lt. Steve Robinson told The Associated Press that no excessive force was used.

Occupy protests targeted other retailers across the country.

More than a dozen Occupy Honolulu protesters demonstrated in front of a Wal-Mart store in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the predawn hours, NBC station KHNL of Honolulu reported.

They accused Wal-Mart of supporting child labor and suppressing its work force.

"Sweat shops in China and around the world produce these products," said Alala Zusman, one of the protesters. "People are paying low prices at Wal-Mart, and when Wal-Mart came in here, this neighborhood lost a lot of mom-and-pop stores."

Meanwhile, Occupy Eugene protesters were moving from store to store in Eugene, Ore., urging shoppers to spend less money on what they call "Buy Nothing Day," NBC station KMTR of Springfield reported.

Shoppers at Valley River Center said they wished the demonstrators, who chanted and sing reworded Christmas carols, would just go away.

"I think it's a waste of time," one shopper said. "People are still buying."

Story: Crazed weekend launches crucial retail season

Occupy Seattle planned to hold a rally from noon to 5 p.m. local time at Westlake Park in the downtown retail core, The Associated Press reported. The Seattle group said it was promoting homemade gifts and local businesses as an alternative to what it called "rampant consumerism that plagues society, destroys the environment and supports the 1 percent."

Occupy Atlanta planned to go even further, setting up its own "really, really free market" downtown as an alternative to Black Friday shopping.

PhotoBlog: Black Friday shopping starts Thursday

Organizer Tim Franzen told the AP that the market, which was scheduled to open in Woodruff Park at 3 p.m. ET, would feature free food, clothing and other items.

He said demonstrators want to focus on the people who are struggling to make ends meet while banks and corporations bring in millions during Friday's shopping tradition.

Mexico City 'zombies' gather to challenge record (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Thousands of self-proclaimed "undead" have gathered in the historic center of Mexico's capital for a "Zombie Walk" that organizers hope sets a world record.

The announced 9,860 registered participants are dressed in rags and ghoulish makeup to look bloody and decaying.

Organizer Pablo Guisa says the fifth annual Mexico City event is meant to celebrate diversity and human rights. The participants also collected donations for a local food bank.

Cities around the world hold zombie walks, and Guinness World Records currently recognizes Asbury Park, New Jersey, as the record holder, with 4,093 participants on Oct. 30, 2010.

A group in Brisbane, Australia, has applied for the record, claiming it massed 8,000 "zombies" last month.

(AP) ? Family and friends of three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo waited anxiously Friday for news that they had been released from police custody.

Derrik Sweeney, Luke Gates and Gregory Porter, who attend the American University in Cairo, were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square on Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

A court in Egypt ordered the release of the students, a lawyer in Philadelphia confirmed Thursday.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a 19-year-old student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said he spoke by phone with Porter, describing the student's demeanor as "calm and measured, demonstrating a maturity well beyond his 19 years."

"He was extremely thankful and appreciative for our efforts and the unconditional support of his mother and father," Simon said.

Porter is from Glenside, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia.

Sweeney's mother, Joy Sweeney, said she is "absolutely elated" at the news of her 19-year-old son's release.

"I can't wait to give him a huge hug and tell him how much I love him," she said, adding that the news of the court order was the best Thanksgiving gift.

The 21-year-old Gates is a student at Indiana University.

His parents released a statement Thursday through the school, saying they were "extremely happy" to hear that their son would soon be released.

"This has been a difficult situation, and while we are disappointed that he will be held a few days longer to complete administrative procedures related to his release, we're confident he will be home soon," Bill and Sharon Gates wrote.

The State Department released a statement saying it was trying to independently confirm the reports of the students' release.

Earlier Thursday, Egypt officials said the Abdeen Court in Cairo had ordered their release. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. They did not say when the students would be released.

Joy Sweeney said she wasn't sure when her son, a student at Georgetown University, would be returning to their home in Jefferson City, Mo.

"If he can find his passport (then he'll leave) tomorrow, if not, it won't be until Monday," she said.

She said the U.S. consul general in Egypt, Roberto Powers, recommended that her son leave Egypt as soon as possible.

"He also conveyed that that was what Derrik had conveyed to him that he wanted to do. He was enjoying his experience but (was) ready to be done with it," Sweeney said.

Derrik Sweeney interned for U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., earlier this year. Luetkemeyer's spokesman Paul Sloca, said the congressman is "extremely pleased that he's safe and coming home, especially on Thanksgiving."

Sweeney said she had not prepared for a Thanksgiving celebration, although a friend had taken her some food. She said the idea of a Thanksgiving feast had seemed "absolutely irrelevant" before the news of her son's pending freedom.

Asked what she thought her son would take away from his arrest, Sweeney said she thought he would make something useful of it.

"I'm sure that he'll put a life-lesson learning experience into a positive story," Sweeney said. "He's a writer, he will write about this experience."

Chrome to gain plug and play gamepad support and WebRTC video chat in 2012

Seems like Big G updates its browser of choice with fresh features every time we turn around, and one of Google's own, dev advocate Paul Kinlan, revealed that another spate of upgrades are arriving for Chrome early next year. The headliner is plug-and-play support for gamepads, but native support for cameras, microphones and open-source video chat app WebRTC are on the docket too -- features that give Chrome some considerable gaming chops when combined with its existing WebGL and HTML 5 prowess and, he says, could bring OnLive to the web without plugins. If you thought Angry Birds on a browser was a great, we can't wait to see what's in store when a proper controller and integrated video chat are involved.

Apple flips the switch on Black Friday sale, Macbook Air, Pro see modest discounts

Apple has just launched its annual Black Friday online sale, and, as you may expect, there isn't a whole lot to write home about. The company has slashed the prices of its MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac by a modest $100 for this year's 24-hour event, with the iPad 2 seeing a $41 reduction, and the iPod Touch getting slashed by a measly $21. Not exactly the kind of discounts you'd wait an entire year for, but they're there at the source link, nonetheless. For more tryptophan-laced deals, check out our ongoing Black Friday roundup.

Tell Me What?s in My Genome!

Right now, for about the same price as a conventional medical test that reveals just a handful of genes, you could learn the entire contents of your genome. Sure, it?s a "research" scan, which means it will contain mistakes, and your insurance won?t cover the $4,000-$5,000 bill. But it won't be more than a few years before a complete and virtually error-free version of your genome will be within financial reach. Wouldn?t you like to unlock your complete instruction set, with all the medical and ancestry data it contains?

In Canada, hockey for everyone

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

A hockey player who has been diagnosed as legally blind is rollerblading from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Toronto to raise money to teach blind Canadians how to play hockey. Mark DeMontis, who has limited vision, is in-line skating through Canada with two friends who take turns being his guide. He is raising funds through an organization he started called Courage Canada, and is expected to arrive in Toronto on Oct. 15 ? two months after setting off from Halifax.

Mr. DeMontis says he was inspired by Chris Delaney, a blind Canadian who rode a tandem bike across Canada to raise funds for research.

Blind hockey is a sport that so far exists only in Canada. It involves a puck that is much larger, slower, and noisier than a normal puck ? which makes it easier to spot for visually impaired players, according to Fran?ois Beauregard, a captain of a Montreal-based blind hockey team called Les Hiboux de Montreal, or The Montreal Owls. Canada started having national blind hockey tournaments two years ago, but organizers would like to turn it into an international sport. They?ve received e-mails and phone calls from the United States and Sweden expressing interest.

In addition to hockey, there are also bicycling, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiing events for blind people in Canada.

More Than Just Travel: Insurance Packages That Cover All Aspects ...

Vacations are something that we look forward to every year. Somehow, when the pressures of work become overwhelming, we have thoughts of spending our vacation leaves on some faraway land under a tropical sun occupy our minds to help us through some very trying times. Vacations are something grand, hence, necessary preparations must be made to make them as enjoyable as possible. One of the essential things you could prepare for is travel insurance packages. Please take note of the word ?packages? as these are more than just travel insurance.

Why do we say that travel insurance packages are more than just travel insurance? There are a lot of wonderful reasons behind such fact. Let?s take a look at them.

* Travel insurance protects you against the usual fare. That is, travel insurance provides some guarantees against flight interruptions caused by delays and cancellations. The insurance company would undertake to reimburse you for any expenses you would incur as a result of the said flight interruptions. This would be a great contingency plan, since flight interruptions can be brought about by intermittent weather patterns all around the world.

* However, what makes a travel insurance package more than just travel insurance are the comprehensive benefits they afford the policy holder. For example, a travel insurance package would also shoulder the medical expenses that would be necessitated by any injury, illness or disease that the injured would suffer during his trip. Indeed, by including protection for the policy holder?s wellbeing, a travel insurance package becomes more than just travel insurance. But that?s not all.

* A travel insurance package is also considered as more than just travel insurance because of the protection it affords against baggage loss. Baggage loss is a common occurrence in travels involving interconnecting flights. It can be quite a hassle to have to contend with an experience abroad without the things you have packed. Thankfully, because a travel insurance package is more than just travel insurance, you would be allotted an allowance in case you do lose your baggage, or you could be reimbursed for the expenses you would incur as a result of the same.

* A travel insurance package further solidifies its claim as more than just travel insurance by also covering car rental damage. Hiring vehicles is a common practice when you want to travel by land in the place where you will be spending your vacation. A travel insurance package would reassure you that whatever contingencies you would encounter, your back would be fully covered.

Indeed, a travel insurance package is more than just a piece of paper that details a transaction. It?s more than just an agreement between an insurance company and a policy holder. It?s more than just travel insurance.

A travel insurance package is the key to a vacation that you could completely savor and enjoy!

Video: Obama pardons turkeys

>>> today in washington the president did what presidents have dpon for the last 64 years now, pardoned the national thanksgiving turkey. this year's lucky bird named liberty along with his understudy peace were officially spared at at white hou as the first family looked on

>> some of you may know that recently i've been taking a series of executive actions that don't require congressional approval. well, here's another one. we can't wait to pardon these turkeys. literally. otherwise, they'd end up next to the mashed potatoes and stuffing. now i'm told that in order to prepare liberty and peace for their big day , the students exposed them to loud noises and flashbulbs so thed be ready to face the white house press corps . this is actually true. they also received the most important part of the media training , which involves learning how to gobble without really saying anything.

>> this afternoon the president and his family took two other turkeys unpardoned to a local food bank.
