Xerox WorkCentre 6605N Color Multifunction Printer

The Xerox WorkCentre 6605N Color Multifunction Printer ($999 direct) is the same as the Xerox WorkCentre 6605DN Color Multifunction Printer, except that it lacks the latter's auto-duplexer. That makes it a good workhorse color laser MFP designed for small workgroups. It provides good output quality when you use its default PostScript driver. The printer's PCL driver has to be installed separately, and?though faster?it's no match for the PostScript in print quality.

The 6605N can print, copy, fax, and scan. It has a front-facing USB port that fits a USB thumb drive that you can print from or scan to. You can scan to email or network folder, and it offers LAN faxing from your PC or walkup faxing using the printer's control panel. These functions are controlled with 4.3-inch color touch screen. A 50-sheet reversing automatic document feeder (ADF) lets you scan, copy, and fax multipage documents.

The white-and-blue 6605N measures 20 by 16.9 by 20.8 inches (HWD), too large to put on a desk, and weighs 71 pounds. It has a standard paper capacity of 700 sheets, split between a 550-sheet main train and a 150-sheet multipurpose tray. An optional second 550-sheet tray ($299 direct) is available, to bring the maximum paper capacity to 1,250 sheets.

PostScript and PCL Drivers
During setup, you're offered two printer drivers (PostScript and PCL6), with checkboxes next to each.? The PostScript driver is marked as recommended, and the box next to it is already checked. The PCL driver's box is empty, so to install it, you have to check the box beside it yourself. If you install both drivers, the PostScript driver will be set as the default, though you can change that later.

The 6605N provides USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit Ethernet) connectivity; an optional Wi-Fi adapter is available for $99 (direct). I tested it over a wired network with its drivers installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

Testing and Print Speed

I ran our official tests using the PostScript driver, as it is both the recommended driver and the only one that installs automatically. (We do our testing using default settings, as in our experience they are the ones that users are most likely to use.) That said, I also did some testing using the PCL driver. As is typical for printers with those two drivers, the PCL was faster (I timed it in simplex mode at 9.1 ppm), but its output quality, for photos and especially for graphics, was inferior to the PostScript. Although the PCL driver may be suitable for quickly printing drafts of documents in situations where output quality is unimportant, Xerox clearly did the right thing in making the PostScript the recommended and default driver.

Xerox WorkCentre 6605N Color Multifunction Printer

On our business applications test suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), ?I timed the 6605N using the PostScript driver at 5.7 pages per minute (ppm). Its rated speed, based on printing text documents without graphics or photos, is up to 36 ppm. (Our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content. I timed the Editors' Choice Lexmark X548dte, rated at 25 pages per minute, at 7 ppm, also in simplex mode. The Editors' Choice Dell C3765dnf, rated at 23 pages per minute, tested at 8.2 ppm in duplex mode, and the Xerox 6605DN in duplex mode using its PostScript driver at 4.8 ppm. (As the 6605N lacks an auto-duplexer, it can be used in simplex (one-sided) mode only.)

Output Quality
The 6605N provides above-average overall output quality, with average text, above-par graphics, and slightly above-par photo quality. Text is fine for most any business use short of desktop publishing applications that require very small fonts. Graphics are fine for PowerPoint handouts, including ones intended for people you seek to impress, and even basic marketing materials. Photo quality is fine for company newsletters, and maybe for basic marketing materials, depending on how picky you are. When I switched to the PCL driver, output quality for both photos and graphics suffered.

Xerox's claimed running costs for the 6605N, including toner and other consumables, are 2.9 cents per monochrome page and 15.3 cents per color page. The Dell C3765dnf's claimed running costs, based on a similar set of consumables, are 1.5 cents per monochrome page and 10 cents per color page, while the Lexmark X548dte's claimed running costs are 1.6 cents per monochrome page and 11 cents per color page.

The Xerox WorkCentre 6605N provides good output quality and brings all the features of the Xerox 6605DN except the auto-duplexer for $100 less. If you know you won't need the duplexer, it will save you some money. It is worth a close look by workgroups needing a color MFP for PostScript use, though its speed was unimpressive. If you don't need PostScript, there are faster choices, like the Dell C3765dnf, that provide good output quality.

Google buys BufferBox, might give Amazon Locker a run for its money

Google has just snapped up BufferBox, a Waterloo, Ontario-based startup that offers temporary lockers for online purchases much like the ones recently deployed by Amazon. Instead of 7-Elevens and RadioShacks however, the relatively young startup has only just started a deal to install parcel kiosks in Canada's Metrolinx GO Transit stations. The Mountain View company hopes to keep BufferBox alive through the acquisition, with plans for 100 kiosks in Greater Toronto and Hamilton in the next year. Of course, we can't help but think this could all be part of Google's master plan for a rumored same-day delivery service that might make Amazon a touch nervous. Hopefully this means future Nexus deliveries will be a just little faster, eh?

Spain's banks must cut branches, bondholders to share losses: EU Commission

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. I haven't led a perfect life either, and I have my own skeletons and things that I would never mention. But still, I can't get over this. ...

New method of manufacturing smallest structures in electronics: Discovery could revolutionize semiconductors

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A completely new method of manufacturing the smallest structures in electronics could make their manufacture thousands of times quicker, allowing for cheaper semiconductors. The findings have been published in the latest issue of Nature.

Instead of starting from a silicon wafer or other substrate, as is usual today, researchers have made it possible for the structures to grow from freely suspended nanoparticles of gold in a flowing gas.

Behind the discovery is Lars Samuelson, Professor of Semiconductor Physics at Lund University, Sweden, and head of the University's Nanometre Structure Consortium. He believes the technology will be ready for commercialisation in two to four years' time. A prototype for solar cells is expected to be completed in two years.

"When I first suggested the idea of getting rid of the substrate, people around me said 'you're out of your mind, Lars; that would never work'. When we tested the principle in one of our converted ovens at 400?C, the results were better than we could have dreamt of," he says.

"The basic idea was to let nanoparticles of gold serve as a substrate from which the semiconductors grow. This means that the accepted concepts really were turned upside down!"

Since then, the technology has been refined, patents have been obtained and further studies have been conducted. In the article in Nature, the researchers show how the growth can be controlled using temperature, time and the size of the gold nanoparticles.

Recently, they have also built a prototype machine with a specially built oven. Using a series of ovens, the researchers expect to be able to 'bake' the nanowires, as the structures are called, and thereby develop multiple variants, such as p-n diodes. A further advantage of the technology is avoiding the cost of expensive semiconductor wafers.

"In addition, the process is not only extremely quick, it is also continuous. Traditional manufacture of substrates is batch-based and is therefore much more time-consuming," adds Lars Samuelson.

At the moment, the researchers are working to develop a good method to capture the nanowires and make them self-assemble in an ordered manner on a specific surface. This could be glass, steel or another material suited to the purpose. The reason why no one has tested this method before, in the view of Professor Samuelson, is that today's method is so basic and obvious. Such things tend to be difficult to question.

However, the Lund researchers have a head start thanks to their parallel research based on an innovative method in the manufacture of nanowires on semiconductor wafers, known as epitaxy -- consequently, the researchers have chosen to call the new method aerotaxy. Instead of sculpting structures out of silicon or another semiconductor material, the structures are instead allowed to develop, atomic layer by atomic layer, through controlled self-organisation.

The structures are referred to as nanowires or nanorods. The breakthrough for these semiconductor structures came in 2002 and research on them is primarily carried out at Lund, Berkeley and Harvard universities.

The Lund researchers specialise in developing the physical and electrical properties of the wires, which helps create better and more energy-saving solar cells, LEDs, batteries and other electrical equipment that is now an integrated part of our lives.

Besides Lars Samuelson, the other authors of the article are: Magnus Heurlin, Martin Magnusson, David Lindgren, Martin Ek, Reine Wallenberg and Knut Deppert, all employed at Lund University, except for Martin Magnusson, who works at start-up company Sol Voltaics AB.

About semiconductors Semiconductors are materials that neither conduct electricity as well as metals, nor stop a current as effectively as insulators -- silicon and germanium are two examples. These properties may not sound attractive, but in actual fact they are excellent. The reason is that we can influence the conductive capacity of the materials, for example by introducing impurity atoms, known as doping. Materials with different types of doping can be combined to manufacture products such as transistors, solar cells or LEDs.

AFS Health & Fitness: Beauty and Fitness, A Nonconformist View

I consider myself a nonconformist in most things. But? let's examine my stance as a nonconformist from a fitness perspective to stay within the scope of this blog.

I am a nonconformist because I vehemently refuse to subscribe to the idea that a particular body type or what a person weight or even how they may appear to the masses categorizes them as being beautiful or even fit. I DO NOT GIVE A FUCK what anyone says or any damn book or school of thought teaches. In my opinion this is why society is so fucked up as it is today. Too much emphasis is being placed on body type or what some may percieve as perfect body symmetry and relating that to the only standard for beauty. FUCK THAT SHIT!

GOD made us all and we are all beautiful. I do not care what body type you are. I am sick and tired of the fitness and fashion industries and its professional perpetuating this bullshit about body type. While it is okay to appreciate someone's body type be it thin or large or whatever? that does NOT make it the standard for BEAUTY. This shit literally has people BRAINWASHED. That because someone may have physical aesthetics or "good body symmetry", whatever the fuck that means because I sure as hell don't know, DOES NOT mean they are fit. The sooner people realize this the better off most of us will be. I know larger than average people who live longer lives than thin people and who to me are more beautiful because they are pure of heart.? Fitness is a STATE OF MIND. If you are regulating fitness to a particular body type or look then your mind or thought process MAY be toxic. And as far as I am concerned a toxic mind is the first sign of someone who needs to improve their overall health and total wellness.

There are some people who get this and others who simply do not. Dove gets it Victoria's Secret does not. And it is this type of thing that poisons the mindset or leads people to think that thin equates to being fit. WRONG WRONG WRONG on all levels. It hurts me to the core though to see others judged or have assumptions made about them because of another persons view of what they feel is beautiful. This to me is a form ethnocentric thinking being applied to a more personal and direct level. Ethnocentrism is the tendency to judge a cultural or society by ones own cultural standards. Combine ethnocentric behavior with politics & economics and you got a formula for war in terms of societies and nations. Therefore ethnocentric thinking to me is TOXIC. In conclusion it as no place in determining fitness and least of all what is or is not beauty.

Peace and One Love,
Nuri

What Stocks Albert Einstein Would Invest in Today - The Market Oracle

Peak Price Not 'Peak Oil', Free 26 Page Report

Companies

Alexander Green writes: Albert Einstein wasn?t famous as an investor. He was a genius who revolutionized theoretical physics. But if he were alive today, it?s pretty clear what he would be doing with his money. And you should be doing it, too.

Let me explain?

It?s a truism that when times are good, investors tend to forget about risk and focus on opportunity. When times are bad, investors tend to forget about opportunity and focus on risk.

This is exactly the opposite of what they should be doing, of course.

But today you have a great opportunity to both limit risk and generate superb returns in your stock portfolio with ? stifle that yawn ? stodgy, old dividend-paying stocks. These investments aren?t nearly as boring as you may think. And in the decade ahead, their returns are likely to be outstanding.

The Basics of Dividend-Paying Stocks

Let?s start with the basics. Dividend yields are a company?s annualized payment divided by its share price. When share prices fall ? as many have over the last month ? yields rise.

It still astonishes me that investors are willing to lend money to the U.S. Treasury for the next 10 years at less than 2%. What a terrible bet, one that virtually guarantees a negative, real (i.e. after inflation) return over the next decade.

A far better bet is a diversified portfolio of dividend-paying stocks. Understand that, over the long run, stock market performance is tied to economic growth. And ? news flash ? the growth outlook in the developed world today isn?t exactly torrid.

Understand furthermore that over the eight decades through 2010, dividends contributed 44% of the stock market?s return, according to Fidelity Investments. Sometimes it was much more. During the 1970s, for example, dividends generated 71% of returns.

Dividend stocks today represent an unusual opportunity. U.S. corporations are sitting on $2 trillion in cash, a record amount. More S&P 500 companies have initiated or raised dividends this year through August than during the same period in any of the last seven years. And there?s plenty of room for more increases. Payments are less than one third of profits, a historic low.

If you?re a growth-oriented investor, you probably don?t think much about dividends. You?re interested in doubling or tripling your money. And with a bit of patience, you can.

The Historical Returns of Dividend-Paying Stocks

Analysts often talk about the lost decade, how stocks have essentially returned nothing since the market highs in the spring of 2000. But the story has been very different with dividend-paying stocks.

Over the past decade ? with dividends reinvested:

  • Oil producer Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) has returned 200%.
  • Altria Group (NYSE: MO), the U.S. tobacco giant, has returned more than 300%.
  • Even musty old Con Edison (NYSE: ED) ? a utility that was born 23 years before Thomas Edison ? has returned 130% over the period.

Today there are plenty of blue-chip stocks with decent (and growing) dividends attached. Consider Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM), AT&T (NYSE: T), Merck (NYSE: MRK), or Verizon (NYSE: VZ).

Or, for a more-diversified approach, plunk for a few shares of PowerShares Dividend Achievers Portfolio (NYSE: PFM), the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (NYSE: VYM), or the WisdomTree Total Dividend Fund (NYSE: DTD).

Dividend stocks alone won?t generate a mouth-watering return. But dividends will rise over time ? and surprising things happen when you reinvest them. Picture a snowball rolling downhill.

Albert Einstein understood this. As he observed, money compounding ?is the most powerful force in the universe.?

Good Investing,

Alex

Iowa State, Ames Lab chemist elected president of American ...

AMES, Iowa ? Tom Barton, a chemist with long ties to Iowa State University and the U.S. Department of Energy?s Ames Laboratory, has been elected president-elect of the American Chemical Society.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has more than 164,000 members and is the world?s largest scientific society.

Barton will be the society?s president-elect in 2013, its president in 2014 and its immediate past-president in 2015. He was recently elected with 62 percent of the vote.

Barton is currently an Iowa State Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and an associate of the Ames Laboratory. He has been at Iowa State since 1967 and a distinguished professor since 1984. He directed the Ames Laboratory from 1988 to 2007. He directed Iowa State?s Institute for Physical Research and Technology from 1998 to 2007. He was also interim director of the Iowa Energy Center in 2009. He retired from Iowa State in May 2012.

And why does he want to lead the ACS? These, after all, are difficult times for chemistry. Jobs are being outsourced, unemployment of chemists is high, research funding is uncertain and young people are less interested in the field. The ACS has developed plans and strategies to address those issues.

?However,? Barton wrote on his candidate website, ?plans remain only words unless there is leadership who passionately believes in our mission, and has the background, talents, capabilities and time available to lead the effort to carry out these strategies, to sell these strategies and to energize the membership of ACS to carry them out with zeal.?

Barton said his priorities will be improving elementary and secondary science education in America, boosting the public?s appreciation of chemistry and addressing employment and globalization issues.

About American education, he said, ?Everybody knows that in K-12 we?re not doing a good job in science, technology, engineering and math. We have more conferences and special reports but still do little or nothing. We need drastic changes. I hope this new bully pulpit of mine will add to the efforts in getting this done.?

Barton, who?s not shy about sharing an opinion or telling a story (he?s even writing some fiction these days), said it?s purely an accident that he?s a chemist.

He started college on a music scholarship ? half voice and half clarinet ? and was asked to pick a science class to meet his degree requirements. When a college official tried to steer him away from a chemistry class for science students, Barton rose to the challenge and took the harder course.

?The next thing you know I had a Ph.D. in chemistry,? he said.

And now, instead of settling into retirement, he?s preparing to advance chemistry and meet the changing needs of chemists.

?While the ACS president is only one person,? Barton wrote on his website, ?an energetic, experienced president can lead by coordinating the effort of 164,000 bright, well-educated members and their collective wisdom to take us into the future.?

2nd Saturn 'Pac-Man' moon revealed

New images from a NASA spacecraft orbiting Saturn have revealed a view any retro-gamer would love: a second moon with a heat tattoo of the 1980s video game icon Pac-Man.

The latest images were snapped by NASA's Cassini spacecraft during a photo session of Saturn's icy moon Tethys, revealing an infrared pattern on the moon shaped like Pac-Man. It is the second time Cassini has found a Pac-Man heat pattern on a Saturn moon using its infrared spectrometer. In 2010, the spacecraft found a similar view on Saturn's moon Mimas, which is also known for a giant impact crater that gives it a similar look to the fictional Death Star of "Star Wars" fame.

"Finding a second Pac-Man in the Saturn system tells us the processes creating these Pac-Men are more widespread than previously thought," study leader Carly Howett said in a statement Monday. "The Saturn system ? and even the Jupiter system ? could turn out to be a veritable arcade of these characters." [ Amazing Saturn Photos by Cassini ]

Scientists suspect that the Pac-Man shapes on Mimas and Tethys are created when high-energy electrons slam into low latitudes on the forward-facing sides of the moons as they orbit Saturn.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Mars rover snaps spooky self-portraits

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: It looks as if someone is taking portraits of NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars from a few feet away ? but who's the photographer?

    2. Countdown to a total solar eclipse
    3. Light from first stars in universe spotted
    4. Spacewalkers troubleshoot leaky radiator

This bombardment transforms the normally "fluffy" surface into hard-packed ice, NASA officials said. The effect means that the hard-packed ice does not heat up as fast during the day or cool down as fast at night, they added. ?

The surface of Tethys is also regularly bombarded by icy particles from geysers on Enceladus, another Saturn moon. The Pac-Man heat signature on Tethys, however, suggests that the surface changes from electron bombardment are occurring faster than the recoating effect from Enceladus' plumes, researchers said.

"Studies at infrared wavelengths give us a tremendous amount of information about the processes that shape planets and moons," Cassini spectrometer principal investigator Mike Flasar of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., explained. "A result like this underscores just how powerful these observations are."

Cassini's infrared spectrometer observations were obtained on Sept. 14, 2011. The research by Howett and her team is detailed in a recent edition of the science journal Icarus.

Howett and her colleagues found that the temperature on Tethys' surface varied depending on where in the Pac-Man they looked. The daytime temperature inside the Pac-Man shape's "mouth" was about 29 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1.6 degrees Celsius) cooler than surrounding areas. The warmest temperature on Tethys, still a frigid minus 300 degrees F (minus 184 degrees C), was actually slightly colder than the warmest temperature on Mimas (about minus 290 degrees F or minus 178 degrees C).

Cassini's views of Tethys also confirmed that the Pac-Man heat map on the moon can also be spotted in visible-light images as a dark, lens-shaped area. The surface oddity was first sighted by NASA's Voyager spacecraft in 1980, but now finally explained.

"Finding a new Pac-Man demonstrates the diversity of processes at work in the Saturn system," said Cassini project scientist Linda Spilker of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Future Cassini observations may reveal other new phenomena that will surprise us and help us better understand the evolution of moons in the Saturn system and beyond."

NASA's Cassini spacecraft launched in 1997 and has been orbiting Saturn since its arrival at the ringed planet in 2004. Cassini is currently in the midst of an extended mission that runs through 2017.

Josh Hutcherson Talks Catching Fire

Filming on Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire has been underway for some time now, and Josh Hutcherson has taken time out to give an update on how things are progressing.

?They actually built a cornucopia in Atlanta that we shot at, and it looks amazing,? says Hutcherson. ?The way that the spokes got out, and the way everyone comes up on the pedestals and the water? it looks incredible. I?ve seen some of the CG renderings that Francis [Lawrence] has worked on, and they look really, really great.?

Continuing the visual theme, he also dropped a few tidbits regarding the use of IMAX cameras, outlining which parts of the story will employ the technology.

?All the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX,? says the star. ?So when you go see it in IMAX, you?ll see the regular movie when we?re in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It?s very cool.?

Directed by Francis Lawrence and co-starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Donald Sutherland, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will open in the UK on 22 November 2013.

Facebook policy change results in hysteria ? and a hoax

Featured

23 hrs.

If you're confused over a recent email from Facebook regarding its data use policy, you're not alone.?

The email ? with the subject line "Updates to Data Use Policy and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities" ? sparked an online hysteria which divided the Facebooking world into two factions: users who suspected the email?was yet another phishing spam scam; and users?who believed that Facebook is rolling back copyright and privacy rights, and protested this by cutting-and-pasting a viral?status update. ?Neither?are accurate.

The hysterically reposted?status?update starts?like this (and goes on and on and on):

In response to the new Facebook guidelines I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, graphics, comics, paintings, photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!

Blah blah blah and so on. We're all busy people, so let's just cut to the chase:

  • The Facebook policy update?email, subject line: "Updates to Data Use Policy Statement of Rights and Responsibilities" (pictured below)?is totally real, totally from Facebook and totally?not a scam. ?
  • The Facebook policy update doesn't represent any egregious robbery of your personal data, photos, drawings,?macaroni?art, etc., let alone any personal data you've already made available to Facebook or on many a site or mobile device.
  • Even if Facebook was coming for your macaroni art, et. al, your cut-and-paste status would do nothing to change it. As Snopes (a site you should have bookmarked) helpfully reminds: "Facebook users cannot retroactively negate any of the privacy or copyright terms they agreed to when they signed up for their Facebook accounts nor can they unilaterally alter or contradict any new privacy or copyright terms instituted by Facebook simply by posting a contrary legal notice on their Facebook walls. " This is true whether Facebook is a publicly traded company or not.?

Now that we're clear on that, let's focus on the notable items of this totally real, authentic?Facebook update (which you can read in full here):

  • The new policy will allow Facebook to obtain data about you?"from our?affiliates?or our advertising partners" (with whom you've already shared your personal info, such as websites, memberships, etc.), to "improve the quality of ads." Plenty of sites already do this, matching your info (which you've provided, technically?of your own free will)?to show you ads your most likely to respond to, and to report to those ad partners how you did respond.
  • Facebook is also axing your ability to vote on policy changes ? a practice it first launched in 2009 to a continually?underwhelming?response. As?Suzanne Choney reported earlier this year, a vote on privacy changes resulted in "hardly anyone voting."?(The trouble here?may be in the rules, however.?"Hardly anyone"?equaled?342,632 votes at the time," Choney explained. An army, but hardly the third of its users Facebook requires to?vote before it registers?dissent.)?
  • You have until 9 a.m. ET, Wednesday,?Nov. 28 ?to vote or comment on these and the other?changes ? probably for the last time. ?That's a scant seven days since the policy notice went live on the Facebook Governance page, but face it, were you ever?really going to vote, anyway?

NBC News?contacted Facebook over the confusion likely caused by the latest policy change?announcement and the latest Facebook copyright status hoax, and received the following email statement:

As outlined in our terms, the people who use Facebook own all of the content and information they post on Facebook, and they can control how it is shared through their privacy and application settings. Over the last few years, we have noticed some statements that suggest otherwise and we wanted to take a moment to remind you of the facts ? when you post things like photos to Facebook, we do not own them.?

True enough.

As we reported a year ago, Facebook made a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over the massive privacy rollback on 2009 which bars the social network "from making?any further deceptive privacy claims." Facebook is also?now required to?"get consumer's approval before it changes the way it shares their data, and requires that it obtain periodic assessments of its privacy practices by independent, third-party auditors for the next 20 years."

Hence these emails that send us into a status-update cut-and-paste panic. If you fell for it this time around, don't be too hard on yourself. You're certainly not alone. As Facebook users, we're still angry over the social network playing fast and loose with our privacy in years past. Some people show their rage in fits of cutting and pasting, others vow they'll never touch Facebook again, then secretly log in three days later. We may love it too much to leave it, but can you really ever?trust?a cheater ? even when that cheater is trying to show you its reformed??

?Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about privacy and then asks her to join her on Twitter and/or Facebook. Also, Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.

Italy's Berlusconi says considering political return

ROME (Reuters) - Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Monday he was considering a political comeback for elections expected in March, but that the decision depended on who his center-left adversaries selected as their main candidate.

A center-left primary contest on Sunday left Democratic Party (PD) leader Pier Luigi Bersani, 61, ahead of his younger rival Matteo Renzi before a final runoff on December 2, thanks mainly to his strong support among traditional PD voters.

Renzi, the 37 year-old mayor of Florence who has run as a modernizer, is mistrusted by many on the left of the PD but has wider appeal among the broader electorate. A Renzi victory is widely seen as a deterrent to a Berlusconi comeback.

In the latest of several switches of position, Berlusconi, who has previously ruled out running, said Italy needed a complete transformation following mounting popular disgust with traditional politics.

"I think that it's right for someone who had the honor of leading the Italian government for almost 10 years to reflect on the way to achieve this modernization of Italy, this liberal revolution," he said, in an interview with his own Canale 5 television.

Berlusconi said he would decide what to do depending on whether the left's candidate turned out to be Renzi or former communist Bersani. "With Renzi, Italy could have a Social Democratic party like other countries such as Germany and England have," he said.

Statement Against High-Stakes Standardized Testing by ...

DEY?s Senior Adviser, Nancy Carlsson-Piage recently initiated a Statement against High- Stakes Testing? which is being signed by Massachusetts professors and researchers.? Below, read a ?call to action? letter aimed at all Massachusetts professors and researchers, explaining the why it is important and how to sign on.

Dear Professor,

There is a new sense of possibility for change in our outmoded high-stakes testing policies, thanks to a growing national movement of educators, parents and students. A National Resolution on High-Stakes Testing has gained more than 13,600 individual and 460 organizational signers. Thanks in large part to testing fiascos around the country, the mainstream press has started to take note and editorials have begun to question this approach to education ?reform.?

Inspired by recent statements by education professors in New York and Chicago, we have written a Massachusetts version of a statement against high-stakes testing that we hope would draw similarly large numbers of signers (New York?s has 1,160 ? http://www.nyclu.org/files/releases/testing_professor_letter.pdf; Chicago?s has 88 ? http://createchicago.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html; a new letter from Georgia professors has 38 ? http://www.empoweredga.org/Articles/greater-support.html).

We would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time to review this letter and consider endorsing it. If you are willing to sign this statement, please send an email to matestingstatement@gmail.com with the heading ?I Will Sign On? and your name and position in the body of the email. And if you do endorse it, will you help us reach additional signers? These could be colleagues at your college or at another college, in schools of education or in other departments.

Attached to this message is a copy of the statement with a list of the 32 original endorsers and four initiators.

Sincerely,

?Chris Buttimer, Ed.D. candidate, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Nancy Carlsson-Paige, Professor Emerita, Lesley University

Lisa Guisbond, FairTest and Citizens for Public Schools

Monty Neill, Executive Director, FairTest

Below?read the statement in its entirety:

Statement against High-Stakes Standardized Testing

by Massachusetts Professors and Researchers

There has been a ground swell of opposition to the overuse and misuse of standardized testing across the United States. This includes statements from more than 670 Texas school boards, nearly one-third of all New York State principals, and hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals who have endorsed the National Resolution on High-Stakes Testing. Against this backdrop, two significant statements have come from groups of educators and researchers in Chicago, Georgia and New York.We applaud these actions and have come together in solidarity with their efforts.

We respectfully present this statement to the Massachusetts Commissioner of Education, the Secretary of Education and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) because you have it within your power to dramatically improve state assessment policies and thereby improve the learning opportunities and conditions for all of our students.? We also copy this to the Governor and key legislators, as they too have the power to enact positive changes.

As educators and researchers from across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we strongly oppose our state?s continued overreliance on high-stakes standardized testing to assess student achievement, evaluate teacher effectiveness, and determine school quality. Given that standardized tests provide only one indicator of student achievement, and that their high-stakes uses produce ever-increasing incentives to teach to the test, narrow the curriculum, or even to cheat, we call on the BESE to stop using standardized tests in high-stakes decisions affecting students, teachers, and schools.

Researchers have documented, and a nine-year study by the National Research Council (Hout & Elliott, 2011) has confirmed, that the past decade?s emphasis on testing has yielded little learning progress. Further, testing experts and the test-makers themselves have consistently warned against using standardized tests for high-stakes decisions such as graduation or retention, or to hire, fire, or reward teachers (AERA, 2000).? The tests provide only a snapshot of a limited range of knowledge and skills, so they can provide only limited information to teachers. Because the tests are not designed to determine teacher effectiveness, no accurate conclusions can be drawn about an individual teacher from her students? test scores. Research indicates that a teacher?s impact on student learning cannot be reliably isolated from the myriad other factors that impact student learning (Baker et al., 2009). Finally, test experts have shown that test scores can be raised without increasing true student learning (Koretz, 2008), and that the higher the stakes attached to a test, the less trustworthy the test scores are.? Cheating scandals in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and dozens of other major cities dramatically illustrate this problem. Problems with the use of MCAS interact with other educational problems, such as continued funding inequities and the growth of poverty within the state (MassBudget, 2012). While MCAS may help identify the consequences of inequities, its high-stakes uses exacerbate these consequences. These MCAS problems include but are not limited to:

Disparate impact on students. Numerous studies document that the use of high-stakes testing ? including test barriers to high school graduation ? bears adverse impact on students and is accompanied by widening racial/ethnic and income-based gaps.? MCAS testing has not significantly reduced disparities in achievement or eliminated gaps, thus the negative consequences of the high-stakes tests fall disproportionately on the groups that most need help. In Massachusetts? low-income, urban districts, large numbers of students perform below proficiency on the MCAS. Twice as many urban as suburban public high school graduates fail college placement tests in math and English and must take noncredit, remedial classes (Massachusetts DESE, 2008). Results on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show a failure to achieve significant reduction in the achievement gap separating Massachusetts? white students from African-American and Latino students since 2003. The negative effects of our high-stakes testing environment are perhaps most pronounced for English Language Learners (ELLs) ? for whom the tests were not designed ? who cumulatively and consistently fail to achieve proficiency within the limited school time of a year and a day before they are required to take the exam in English. According to a 2011 Gaston Institute report, ?In high school, about 18% of [ELL] students were retained in grade, many of them several times and many of them in the ninth grade to avoid having them fail the tenth grade MCAS graduation requirement.? In Massachusetts, ELLs are, on average, nine times more likely to drop out of high school than their peers. The disparate impact of the graduation requirement on students with disabilities also is striking. For example, of the 2,798 students who did not pass all the required MCAS tests by the end of their senior year in 2011, 75% were students with disabilities. The fact remains that Massachusetts has placed the most severe accountability on the backs of its most disadvantaged students.

Negative impact on curriculum and instruction. Surveys of teachers in Massachusetts (Abrams et al., 2003; Clarke et al., 2003) and nationally (McMurrer, 2007; Moon et al., 2003; Hinde, 2003) show a marked increase in teaching to the test and narrowing the curriculum to tested subjects as a result of high-stakes testing. In addition, research compiled by the NRC and others shows this comes with a negative impact on school climate, often creating an environment of intimidation, fear, anxiety and stress for both teachers and their students, including kindergarten children (Hout & Elliott, 2011). Further, investigators of the Atlanta cheating scandal identified high-stakes testing as a cause of the problem (Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 2011). Under such conditions, it becomes difficult for teachers to create a learning environment that promotes creativity, critical thinking, risk-taking, experimentation and a love of learning. Moreover, as with other negative consequences, there is a disparate impact: teaching to the test, curricular narrowing and damaging school climates more frequently affect low income and minority students.

Negative impact on educators. High-stakes testing creates adverse consequences not only for students but also for educators. Researchers have challenged the validity, reliability, effectiveness, and ethics of using high-stakes test scores to evaluate educators. Further, as argued in an open letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel by Chicagoland Researchers and Advocates for Transformative Education (CReATE, 2012), ?There is no evidence that evaluation systems that incorporate student test scores produce gains in student achievement? [and] Teachers will subtly but surely be incentivized to avoid students with health issues, students with disabilities, students who are English Language Learners, or students suffering from emotional issues. Research has shown that no model yet developed can adequately account for all of these ongoing factors.? Student growth measures are not capable of identifying with reasonable accuracy and consistency over time who is or is not an effective teacher. Already some highly effective teachers are leaving the profession. Further, Massachusetts? new system requires that ?measures of student learning? be developed as part of annually evaluating every teacher in every subject and grade. This could further inundate students with testing and test preparation.

Negative impact on schools. The problems discussed above harm many schools, as well as their students and teachers individually.? While federal law requires assessments, it does not require high-stakes standardized testing. There is nothing to prevent Massachusetts from using a very different assessment system, using multiple sorts of indicators gathered over time, as was proposed in the Education Reform Act of 1993.

Recommendations

Because of these and other problems with the high-stakes uses of standardized tests to evaluate students, teachers and schools, we call on the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to:

  • Work with educators, parents and the public to craft a new assessment system that will more fully assess the many competencies our children need to succeed in the 21st century and that will avoid the current overreliance on standardized tests.
  • Stop using MCAS test results as a barrier to high school graduation.
  • Prohibit the use of test scores in educator evaluations and in decisions for hiring, firing, laying off or rewarding teachers.
  • Focus teacher evaluations on the appropriate use of evidence-based teaching practices and a comprehensive set of indicators of classroom and school-based student learning rather than one-shot test scores.
  • Stop using test scores to designate schools for punitive turnaround reform measures that mandate the firing of 50% or more of the staff.
  • Focus turnaround reform efforts on school-wide, research-based approaches.

We know that reforming the current high-stakes testing system will take time and political capital, but we believe that it is not only possible but also imperative if we want to improve the lives of all children and ensure their future success. Given the recent unprecedented attention focused on problems with current testing practice, this is exactly the right time to transform recommendations into reality. Therefore, we make ourselves available to the BESE to assist in these efforts in whatever ways are necessary.

Choosing the Best Remodeling Contractor to Design Your Outdoor ...

Choosing the Best Remodeling Contractor to Design and Build Your Outdoor Space in DFW

Designing an outdoor living area can be fun and rewarding for you and your family. Unfortunately, it can also be stressful and costly. Since we Texans get to enjoy most of the year outside, designing an outdoor living area has become a very popular item on the family wish list. There are several things you can do to prepare, so here are some Tips for Designing an Outdoor Living Area.

1. Establish a Budget

Too often families find pictures on HGTV, Houzz, or other websites and begin preparing and creating their outdoor living dreams only to find out later that their $30,000 budget was much less than the $60,000 design they found. Therefore, the first place to start is to determine your budget and whether or not you are paying upfront or financing. If you are considering financing, many times your mortgage company can help or even other financing sources.

2. Determine the Space and Accessibility of Your Outdoor Living Area

When you invest in an outdoor living area, you want to make sure you have the space for the design and build in an area that is easily accessible from the house. In other words, you don't really want to have to walk too far from your house to get to your outdoor living area or it will become an inconvenience for your family and will not be used as much. Space is also important when it comes to selecting the design. After all, if your design requires far more area than your space has available, the design of your outdoor living area will not work.

3.Make Sure Your Design Compliments Your Home Design

One of the challenges of selecting ideas for HGTV, Houzz and other websites is that it might not compliment your home. While the outdoor living area you view looks great on the Internet or in a magazine, it might not marry up with your home's look and feel nearly as well as it does with the home in the picture. Make sure the designer you choose helps you visualize what will and what will not look great for your home.

4. Be Confident You Can Keep the Landscape Around the Area Immaculate

One thing we have seen hurt the look and feel of an outdoor living area is a poor landscape surrounding it. Make sure you are building your outdoor living area in an place where you can keep the landscape looking great. Consider the location of your larger trees and shrubs and what impact they might have on the location of your outdoor living area.
