The Epson WorkForce WF-845 ($199.99 street) multi-function printer (MFP) has the features (touch screen, auto duplexer, duplexing ADF, and more) and the ?paper capacity to anchor a home, micro, or small office. It also has what it takes to double as a home printer as well, provided that you?re not too picky about photo quality.
The WF-845 can print, copy, scan, and fax. It can scan to your PC or to e-mail. It can print from or scan to memory cards or USB keys. It can fax either from the printer?s keyboard or from your PC (PC Fax). You can e-mail documents directly to the printer for printout.
The WF-845 has a generous 500-sheet standard paper capacity, split between two 250-sheet trays. It adds an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. Its 30-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF) lets you automatically scan, copy, or fax both sides of a sheet of paper.
The matte-black WF-845 measures 11.8 by 176 by 14.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 22 pounds. Embedded in its 7.8-inch touch panel?which you can tilt to the angle of your choice?is a 3.5-inch TFT color screen. Apart from the On/Off button there are no physical buttons; all control is through the touch panel. Pressing the Home icon gives you the choices of Copy, Fax, Scan, Print Photos, Print Ruled Paper, and Setup. Below the panel is a port for a USB thumb drive, and a memory-card reader that accepts a variety of card formats, including CompactFlash.
The Epson WorkForce can connect to a computer via USB, or to a network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. I tested the WF-845 over an Ethernet connection with its drivers installed on a computer running Windows Vista.
Speed and Output Quality
The Epson WorkForce WF-845 printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (as timed with QualityLogic?s hardware and software) at 4.2 effective pages per minute (ppm), a decent speed for an inkjet MFP. Still, it?s slightly slower than its predecessor, theEpson WorkForce 840 ($299.99 direct, 4 stars), which we clocked at 4.5 ppm, and lags the Editors? Choice HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One ($299.99 direct, 4 stars), which zipped through the tests at 5.9 ppm. ?
Text quality was sub-par for an inkjet. Although it?s fine for internal business correspondence, it faltered with smaller fonts, and I?d avoid using it for formal reports, resumes, and other documents in which visual impact is important.
Graphics quality was typical of an inkjet MFP. Two issues of note were banding, a regular pattern of thin lines of discoloration in some illustrations with solid backgrounds?and dithering, the breakup of solid areas into fine dot patterns. In neither case were the issues severe, and graphics quality should be good enough for internal business use, including PowerPoint handouts. Photo quality was slightly sub-par. Colors tended to be on the pale side, and didn?t really ?pop.? Although detail was good in darker areas, there was some loss of contrast in brighter areas. Some solid areas showed dithering (graininess). Many of the prints were of a quality you?d expect from drugstore prints. The quality is good enough for business uses like printing out images on Web pages, though I?d hesitate to use them for, say, real estate handouts.
It?s easy for me to recommend the Epson WorkForce WF-845. It brings a lot to the table: copious standard paper capacity, automatic duplexer, duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF), multiple-format media-card reader plus a port for a USB thumb drive, touch-screen control panel with embedded LCD. Though built for the office, it can double as a home and home-office printer if you can make do with less than stellar photos. It?s a great value for its price. The WF-845 doesn?t have either the speed or the output quality of the Editors? Choice HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One, but you can have it for $100 less.
