Experts build crab-like robot to remove stomach cancer (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? Inspired by Singapore's famous chilli crab dish, researchers have created a miniature robot with a pincer and a hook that can remove early-stage stomach cancers without leaving any scars.

Mounted on an endoscope, it enters the patient's gut through the mouth. It has a pincer to hold cancerous tissues, and a hook that slices them off and coagulates blood to stop bleeding.

With the help of a tiny camera attached to the endoscope, the surgeon sees what's inside the gut and controls the robotic arms remotely while sitting in front of a monitor screen.

"Our movements are very huge and if you want to make very fine movements, your hands will tremble ... But robots can execute very fine movements without trembling," said enterologist Lawrence Ho, who helped design the robot.

Professor Ho, who is chair at the University Medicine Cluster of Singapore's National University Health System, said the robot helped remove early-stage stomach cancers in 5 patients in India and Hong Kong, using a fraction of the time normally taken in open and keyhole surgeries that put patients at higher risk of infection and leave behind scars.

Stomach, or gastric, cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide and is particularly common in east Asia. Diagnosis of gastric cancer usually occurs at a late stage of the disease when treatment is difficult and often unsuccessful.

Louis Phee, associate professor at Singapore's Nanyang Technological Institute's school of mechanical and aerospace engineering, helped design the robot with Ho.

They developed the robot after a seafood dinner in Singapore in 2004 with top Hong Kong surgeon Sydney Chung, who suggested they fashioned their device after the crab. Chung is best known for fighting SARS in Hong Kong in 2003.

"He (Chung) suggested we used the crab as a prototype. The crab can pick up sand and its pincers are very strong," said Ho.

"Many things are a certain way because they have evolved and adapted to certain functions ... we created something that followed the human anatomy and borrowed ideas from nature and incorporated the two."

The researchers formed a company last October and hope to make the robot commercially available in three years.

Super Bowl: viewer gender gap is narrowing (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Feb 1 (TheWrap.com) ? It may be time for Madison Avenue to reconsider all those car and beer ads run during the Super Bowl.

Sports Business Daily crunched Nielsen Media data and found that the divide between the number of women who watch the big game vs. men is getting smaller.

Last year, 54 percent of the roughly 111 million viewers who tuned in to watch the Packers and Steelers on Fox were men, compared to 46 percent women.

That compares with a 56 percent-male, 44 percent-female split in for the Steelers and Seahawks on ABC in 2006, Sports Business Daily notes, and a 51/43 male-to-female ratio for the Patriots and Rams on Fox in 2002.

That means the gap has narrowed from 14 percentage points to eight percentage points during the past decade.

Something for Hollywood to keep in mind when deciding which movies to advertise during the big game. "The Avengers," "John Carter" (above) and "G.I. Joe" sequel are among those movies that will get plugged in between the action on the field this year.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The agency building the new World Trade Center says a design flaw could add millions of dollars to the cost of the complex's signature tower.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Tuesday that the loading dock under One World Trade Center won't be finished in time for tenants to move their equipment into the 104-story tower. So it's building five temporary loading bays above ground.

A temporary station that was built for the Port Authority Trans Hudson subway is blocking access to the underground loading area. The station can't be dismantled to make way for underground freight areas until crews finish the permanent station.

"Several years ago there was a design miss," Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority, told reporters Tuesday. "Should it have been caught? The answer is, probably."

The temporary loading bays will add millions to the cost of One World Trade Center, the glass and steel spire previously known as the Freedom Tower. The building is now 90 stories high.

"We and the other concerned stakeholders believe this will be a short-term issue and will not impede completion of the site or tenants moving into the buildings," Foye said. He spoke after giving a speech to the Association for a Better New York.

The Wall Street Journal on Monday reported that the cost of One World Trade Center has soared to $3.8 billion, $700 million more than the last publicly released estimate in 2008.

Foye said the rising costs will be examined in a review of the agency that is being prepared for the governors of New York and New Jersey. He would not confirm the $3.8 billion figure.

Other problems at the World Trade Center have included a dispute with the foundation that is building a 9/11 museum and financial troubles that have dogged the company that is laying steel.

Foye said One World Trade Center is 60 percent leased by tenants including the Conde Nast magazine company and Vantone Industrial, a Chinese real estate company. But other buildings planned for the complex have struggled to find occupants.

Last week Silverstein Properties Inc., the developer building the 80-story Three World Trade Center, said it is still looking for tenants to fill the first 10 floors of that building, which is already under construction. If it cannot fill 10 floors, Silverstein must stop construction at seven floors under a financing agreement with the Port Authority.

The second-highest building in the planned complex, the 88-story Two World Trade Center, is also on hold because of a lack of tenants.

Foye said the Port Authority still expects to finish One World Trade by the end of 2013.

He said completion of the tower will allow the agency to refocus on its transportation duties, including long-overdue overhauls of its bridges and improvements to its airport terminals.

Tuesday was the deadline for contractors to send proposals to the Port Authority to replace La Guardia Airport's Central Terminal, which Foye called obsolete.

"It's got a quaint, nostalgic but unacceptable kind of 1940s, 1950s feel that's just not acceptable," he said.

Foye also said about $350 million is earmarked for overhauling Terminal B at Newark Liberty International Airport. Travelers have criticized that terminal because of the way it limits passengers to individual "piers" instead of allowing them to move around the whole terminal.

Later this year, the Port Authority will also ask contractors for proposals to build a new Terminal A at Newark, Foye said.

Delta Air Lines and the Port Authority are also renovating Delta's hub at John F. Kennedy International Airport's Terminal 4, mostly through $900 million in special-project bonds.

Clinton: Syria not another Libya

Speaking at the U.N. Security Council US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says, "It is time for the international community to put aside our own differences and send a clear message of support to the people of Syria."

Updated at 4:45 p.m. ET: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the Security Council to adopt the Arab League plan for a political process to end the violence in Syria, saying it?would be different from U.N. efforts to pacify Libya.

The?Arab League plan?calls for Syrian President Bashar Assad to transfer his powers to his deputy to prepare for elections.

"I know that some members here may be concerned that the Security Council is headed toward another Libya," she said. "That is a false analogy."

Updated at 3:45 p.m. ET: Western and Arab nations launched a major diplomatic offensive at the U.N. on Tuesday in hopes of overcoming Russia's opposition to a resolution demanding that Syrian President Bashar Assad relinquish power, The Associated Press reported.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the British and French foreign ministers traveled to New York for the afternoon Security Council session on the situation in Syria.

Nabil Elaraby, the chief of the Arab League, called on the Security Council to take 'rapid and decisive action' on Syria, Reuters reported

"Realizing the hopes of the Syrian people is in your hands," Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabr Al Thani told council members, asking them to adopt the resolution, based on the Arab League's peace plan for the country. "It is part of your responsibility under the (U.N.) charter," he said, according to The Associated Press.?

Updated at 12:35 p.m. ET: Syrian leader Bashar Assad cannot sustain his hold on power and it is a matter of time before his leadership falls, U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told senators, according to Reuters.

"I personally believe it's a question of time before Assad falls, but that's the issue, it could be a long time," Clapper told a Senate intelligence committee hearing. "Protraction of these demonstrations, the opposition continues to be fragmented, but I do not see how he can sustain his rule of Syria."

Meanwhile, British newspaper the Guardian reported that a copy of the draft U.N. resolution demanding Assad step aside tried to address Russian concerns that the vote could open the door to western military intervention.

The draft obtained by the newspaper said the council is "reaffirming its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, emphasising the need to resolve the current crisis in Syria peacefully, and stressing that nothing in this resolution compels states to resort to the use of force or the threat of force," according to the newspaper.

The draft did not entirely exclude the possibility of military action, however, the newspaper reported.

Published at 8:30 a.m. ET: A senior Russian diplomat warned Tuesday that a draft U.N. resolution demanding Syrian President Bashar Assad step aside is a "path to civil war," as Syrian troops crushed pockets of resistance by rebel soldiers on the outskirts of Damascus.

The U.N. Security Council was to meet Tuesday to discuss the draft, backed by Western and some Arab powers. But Russia would likely veto any punitive action.

"The Western draft Security Council resolution on Syria does not lead to a search for compromise," Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov wrote on Twitter. "Pushing this resolution is a path to civil war."

Russia has been one of Assad's strongest backers as he tries to crush an uprising that began nearly 11 months ago. In October, Moscow vetoed the first council attempt to condemn Syria's crackdown and has shown little sign of budging in its opposition.

President Bashar Assad's regime has slaughtered thousands of people since March, according to the United Nations. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

The draft text of the resolution, seen by The Associated Press, insists there will be no use of foreign forces in the country. It calls on Assad's regime to immediately put "an end to all human rights violations and attacks against those exercising their rights to freedom of expression."

It calls on Assad to delegate his "full authority to his deputy" to allow a national unity government to lead transition to a democratic system. The text, the drafting of which has been led by Morocco, insists it does not compel "states to resort to the use of force, or the threat of force."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday he hoped the Security Council would reflect international will when it deliberates the resolution.

"I sincerely hope the Security Council will be united and speak in a coherent manner reflecting the wishes of the international community," Ban told reporters in the Jordanian capital Amman. "This is crucially important."

China, which like Russia has a veto in the council, also has reservations about the draft. Russia and China vetoed a European-drafted resolution in October that condemned Syria and threatened it with sanctions.

"I don't think we can go on like this," Ban said.

Syria's crackdown on protesters and anti-government fighters had gone on despite a now-suspended Arab League monitoring mission and action was needed to stop the bloodshed, he said.

"Even with the monitoring missions having been there, more than a few hundred have been killed ... every day tens of people are killed ... this should stop immediately," Ban said. "It is crucially important for the Security Council to act on this."

Escalating violence
Meanwhile Tuesday, government troops were deploying in "massive numbers" to the suburbs of Damascus, the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told NBC News. The group said at least 11 people had been killed as of Tuesday morning.

The Observatory, which supports the Free Syrian Army, said government forces were targeting civilians who were aiding defectors, NBC reported.

Fighting has escalated in the past several days with at least 100 people killed on Monday alone.

The office of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay voiced alarm on Tuesday at the escalating violence and called on Syrian authorities to "stop the killing of civilians" while also urging opposition forces to show restraint.

"It does look like there's a very dangerous and alarming escalation taking place including right in the suburbs of Damascus," U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva.

"So once again we urge the Syrian authorities to stop the killing of civilians in Syria. And we also urge the opposition fighters to take extreme caution too and ensure that there is no more unnecessary killing," he said.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the uprising as of mid-December, according to Pillay's office.

Despite "high rates of casualties" since then, it has been impossible to verify incidents and lists of victims compiled by five or six human rights groups on the ground, Colville said.

How Mobile Games Leapt From Cult to Cultural Phenomenon

Although they?re played on small devices, mobile games are becoming a huge deal ? and they?re not just confined to smartphones anymore.

Games like Doodle Jump and Pocket God were some of the first to expand into multimedia and merchandise markets. And Angry Birds has become ubiquitous enough that retailer Barnes & Noble celebrated National Angry Birds Day at stores in December 2011, hosting scavenger hunts and merchandise sales.

How is it that these games, which sell for less than a cup of coffee, and in some instances are even free, can reach so far? Primarily, it?s because they?re cheap, and therefore, are able to more easily hook players. A console game that costs 60 times as much will have a higher barrier of entry, and therefore, won?t be as likely to achieve mainstream success.

A game like Temple Run, which will expand to Android in February, earns 7 million players on a daily basis. This exceeds most any other major console or PC title; only an extremely popular franchise like Call of Duty can even come close to that kind of user base. That lower barrier of entry is precisely why more people get hooked, and how games can start to reach mainstream acceptance.

Furthermore, people are able to carry smartphone-friendly games in their pockets, purses and backpacks. Often these games accompany people?s spare time and commutes. Players develop a positive attachment to mobile games, and are more likely to purchase associated t-shirts, plush toys and even media spinoffs.

So what else contributes to a mobile game?s success? One of the earliest titles to reach mainstream acceptance, Doodle Jump, was referenced on The Big Bang Theory, one of the most-watched shows in the U.S. Pocket God achieved popularity through its frequent updates ? weekly, at its peak ? and has introduced an accompanying comic book series and figurines. FarmVille, a game that started on Facebook before going mobile, has talked about a movie based on the game.

But the poster child for mobile games achieving broad cultural reach is Angry Birds. It?s the game that celebrities tweet about being addicted to, and the game that continues to top the iOS charts two years after its original release. You?ll commonly find Angry Birds merchandise in retail stores ? Rovio even opened up an Angry Birds retail store in Finland that immediately turned a profit.

Although many of these games get started on the iPhone, they are quickly spreading to other platforms, like Android. Angry Birds is also available on computers, and has been used by Google to promote its Chrome web browser. The game is also available on the PSP and PS3, where it has topped sales charts for multiple months. Cut the Rope also expanded to Android, and has been developed in HTML5 to help promote Internet Explorer. Fruit Ninja made its way to Kinect, and has sold over 739,000 copies to-date.

Not surprisingly, becoming involved in the mobile gaming industry can pay off big time. Chillingo, the company that published the original Angry Birds under their Clickgamer label, and later published Cut the Rope, was later bought out by EA for $20 million.

These games are even moving into non-interactive media. Pocket God and Cut The Rope have each introduced a comic book series with Ape Entertainment. Animation may be the next step for some of these properties. Rovio has mentioned creating an Angry Birds cartoon movie; its recent partnership with Dreamworks may be a step toward producing said film. Halfbrick acquired an Australian animation studio in 2011, which it used to create an animated trailer for its game, Jetpack Joyride. Gaming studios that wish to expand their franchises are considering these peripheral markets more and more.

What?s next for these superstar mobile games? While they continue to dominate the charts, other games are emerging as contenders. Disney?s Where?s My Water? has earned a solid spot in the top iPhone and Android charts. Disney?s established global presence and retail chains are an existing springboard for merchandise sales.

Temple Run, developed by the husband-and-wife team at Imangi Studios, could be on the road to app megastardom as well. The game?s already massive player base will likely expand in the next few months as the game releases on Android ? and the merchandising possibilities are already there. Evil monkey plush toys? No-brainer.

Basics

Old World-The realms from which the civilized races come, a continent across the seas where monsters once lived but long ago were driven to extinction.

New World- A large continent, many times the size of the New World whose boundaries have not yet been fully explored. It's habitat's range from arctic to tropical and only its eastern half is colonized. A large chain of mountains split it across the middle and form a barrier to settlers.

The Colonies- A band of settlements concentrated on the eastern shore which push ever inward into the wilderness. There are three main colonies (each founded by a separate race) which are bound together by loose treaties.

New Arcadia - The Elven colony named for its mother country. It is the southernmost of the three colonies. Much of its wealth comes from plantations which make the raw material for fine elven textiles from the sweat of enslaved monsters.

Duerheim - Located in the frozen north where only dwarves could prosper, this colony is focused unsurprisingly on extracting ore (particularly of the enchanted variety) which it ships back to the mother country for processing.

Cathandria - Named for the human saint and cleric, Cathandra, this colony is strictly regulated by the teachings of the church. It is overseen not by secular magistrates but by a grand cleric who's word is law and who answers only to the Anointed across the sea.

The Wilds - A catch all term for the uncivilized lands west of the colonies which covers many diverse regions.

The Gray Mountains - Named for the slate gray stone which composes much of its peaks and the gray fog which drifts down from it, these mountains separate the eastern half of the New World from the mysteries which lay beyond. Most mundane theorists guess another shore lies to the far west, but a few speculate that the world simply ends or one crosses over into the mythical Dragon Realm.

Dragon Realm - A myth told by sailors that a land of riches lies far to the East across the endless seas, or by some accounts beyond the Gray Mountains. Most such tales claim that the dragons, driven from the Old World, settled there, hence the name Dragon Realm.

Kandazur Jungle - A deep an impenetrable jungle east of Elven Colony of New Arcadia, it forms a barrier of thorns against all attempts at settlement. The jungle is known for its ancient ruins, hinting at lost civilizations, but explorers who venture within must be prepared to deal with the jungle's fierce predators which include giant serpents, basalisk and several varieties of troll.

Castle Betz

Castle Betz is an avarage size castle construted five hundered years ago by the Betz family. It is located in the south-western most part of the human kingdom. The castle was build too far away from any other human settlement at the time, because of this the castle often lacked the protection of the rest of the kingdom or the law enforcement making it a perfect place for bandits and outlaws. As the years past house Betz started loosing it's power and soon enough the area looked more like the wilds than a civilized human settlement. Shortly there after the castle was abandoned by house Betz which ended up moving to the human city of Cathandria in looks of political power. The castle still stands today, forgotten and in ruins, the place is left alone by most explorers and travelers since it is believed that it is haunted and that anyone that enters ends up a vampire.

100 years ago this castle stood as the pride of the noble LaFonte Family. With it's tall towers of gleaming white stone and it's grand chapel it also stood as a rightous fortress of the human God against the wilds and "evils" of the wilds. How ironic that it how lies in ruins and is deem haunted, taken back by the wilds all because of an act of greed. For another human lord in his greed sacked and killed the Lafonte family but his victory was short lived as all was killed by the cry of the LaFonte maiden now a banshee. It is said you can still hear the mournful song of the lost maiden coming from the ruins and that none who enter this once holy fortress ever return...
