COMMENTARY | The winner of Tuesday's Republican Presidential debate: the number nine. In all seriousness, the Republican candidates took part in a roundtable debate hosted by the Washington Post, which at times became heated. In summary, Cain floundered, Gingrich played second fiddle, and Perry continued his decline. Here is a deeper analysis of the night.
Cain's Ineffectiveness
Herman Cain's 999 plan came out of the debate beaten and bruised. Herman Cain was largely ignored in prior debates, and so was his plan. Yet, Cain's recent surge in the polls garnered the attention of his Republican colleagues. Congresswoman Bachmann stated that if you flipped 999, "the devil was in the details." Frontrunner Mitt Romney suggested that Cain's plan was too simplistic, and his own 59 point plan was more effective.
Cain didn't help his own cause when he couldn't name more than one economist who helps him develop his policies. Cain can repeat the number nine all he wants, but eventually he will have to present a broader platform. He doesn't seem capable of doing so.
Vice President Gingrich
As usual, Gingrich didn't pull any punches with his remarks. Chris Dodd and Ben Bernanke better get former President Clinton on the phone because Gingrich fell just short of demanding they be put in jail. One can't help to think Gingrich is running for Vice President. Gingrich refuses to attack any of the other candidates, which he would have us believe is a strategy to form a strong Republican coalition, but the former Speaker is too shrewd for that.
During the question segment. Gingrich lobbed a beach ball at Mitt Romney allowing him to explain his plan to cut capital gains taxes, rather than ask him a tough inquiry. Later, Gingrich basically went around the table and pointed out the positive aspects of the candidates' proposals. Gingrich is running for president on the surface, but his kissing up reveals his true intentions.
Perry's Continuing Decline
Perry did nothing to differentiate himself from the other candidates. In addition, he again refused to outline his jobs plan. The most poignant moment came when Governor Perry challenged Mitt Romney on "Romneycare," claiming that Massachusetts' healthcare plan drove up small business insurance 14%. Perry received a beat down at the hands of Romney, as Romney cited the large number of uninsured citizens in Texas. Romney scolded Perry saying, "I'm still speaking," and "I care about people," after pointing out that over one million children in Texas were uninsured.
Perry looked uncomfortable throughout the debate. During cut away shots, while other candidates were speaking, Perry looked frustrated. Someone in the Perry camp needs to coach the governor on debating because he is floundering badly.
The poor performances by the most legitimate contenders gave Romney a win on Tuesday. The status quo will suffice for Romney who is looking to fend off the next fair-weather challenger he encounters.
