The Xbox One hears all, sees all, and steals Google's dreams

Xbox One

Google is a company with many stated ambitions. They want to catalog the world's information. They want to bring you info before you know you need it. They want to build the Star Trek computer. That kind of omniscient service requires an omnipresent awareness.

Google's presence is felt just about everywhere. Google is the dominant search engine on desktops and in mobile. Google builds the operating system that powers an increasingly percentage of smartphones. Google offers an email service and a social networking service and instant messaging so much more. Google has fingers in every pot they can reach, though how far they've successfully plunged said fingers varies. When it comes to the living room, however, where Google's fingertips have just barely grazed the surface of the stock, Microsoft is ladling out the soup like it's their job. And with the newly-announced Xbox One that ladle is getting even bigger.

A picture of you

Google Now

To build that omniscient Star Trek computer, Google needs buckets and buckets of data about you. They get a lot of that just by your using Google's services. Your search queries are tabulated and your email contents are collated, and your friend patterns are analyzed. Even just using Google services through a desktop yields a tremendous amount of data about your being. If you're using Google services on your mobile device, such as an Android device or by using Google Now on an iPhone, Google learns even more about you, including where you go, how long you stay there, what you search for on the go, and more. Of course, those settings can be switched off, but the default behavior is for Google to know.

Google's picture of you can be stunningly accurate and prescient.

Google takes all of this data and builds a picture what it thinks you as a person look like. With some massaging of that data - telling Google that, no, I am in fact not interested in more on that topic, it was just a search for article research, thanks - Google's picture of you can be stunningly accurate and prescient. I carry both an iPhone and an Android device (specifically, a Nexus 4) on a regular basis, I use Gmail for work and personal, I search with Google dozens of times a day, and so forth. Google Now has built an interesting picture of me. It knows when I'm going to be flying, it knows when to offer up nearby restaurants and what I'm likely to like, it knows how far it is to my house and how long it will take thanks to traffic, and it knows that the weekends are the most likely time I'm going to go to the theater, and when I do I'm likely to check out the latest science fiction or mindless action flick.

But the behavioral tracking offered by a smartphone only extends to when I use it (excepting location tracking when I'm just carrying it around, of course). To be as omniscient as Google aims to be, more data is required. There's never enough data to accomplish what Google wants to accomplish. That means Google needs to know more about you. By and large what Google knows about us are things that we either tell Google directly (by way of our searches) and what we let Google know (Gmail, smartphone location tracking, etc).

Google's getting more personal with experiments like Google Glass, but even that requires that you be wearing the device for it to be collecting more information. And really right now the Glass experiment seems to be more focusing on delivering content directly to your eyeball than pushing more data about yourself to the Google cloud. That could change eventually, but it's not the reality of Glass right now. Frankly, as with many Google projects, the end game with Glass isn't exactly clear for us, and we aren't certain it's clear for Google either.

Your couch, the beachhead

Xbox One

Where Google has failed to make its mark, though, is beyond the smartphone and the desktop. The holy grail in Google's hardware trifecta isn't Glass - it's the living room. Google has tried time and again to make Google TV a success, but they've run into tremendous roadblocks of poor consumer awareness (and thus adoption) and severe interoperability problems that plague any effort to unify home entertainment with a single device.

Microsoft, for all their troubles, has actually established a covert beachhead in the living room hardware space with their Xbox game consoles. Being the cash-rich technology behemoth with long-term vision that they are, Microsoft has been more than willing to play the long game when it comes to living room technology. To wit, in less than ten years Microsoft's Xbox has become an accepted part of many home entertainment set-ups, getting favorable comparisons to long-time gaming companies like Sony and Nintendo. It cost them many billions of dollars to get it rolling, but now the Xbox is a gaming force with which one must contend.

With Microsoft's just announced and coming-later-this-year Xbox One, they're pushing up off the beach and into full home entertainment domination. It's an impressive piece of hardware - essentially it's a powerful and optimized gaming computer for your home theater stack - with some interesting features. The Xbox One features an HDMI pass-through so you can plug in your home cable box and control it (with IR blasters - joy) and a Blu-Ray drive. Games can be downloaded or purchased in stores, but purchasing in stores is more just like buying a gift card to download it later.

The Xbox One is the omnipresent surveyor of your living room. It sees all and hears all.

But most interesting is the new Kinect sensor. The depth-sensing, body-tracking sensor bar is even more accurate and detailed than before, going so far as being able to detect the movement of your wrists and your heartbeat from a distance. But what's possibly more interesting is that it's always on. If you walk up to your TV and say "Xbox on," Kinect is already listening, it hears you, and it boots up the Xbox. The Kinect camera uses facial recognition to determine who just told it to turn on, and can log you into your account and have all of your games and media at the ready. The Xbox One is the omnipresent surveyor of your living room. It sees all and hears all.

That can sound pretty scary, and in reality Microsoft isn't likely to use this for nefarious purposes. Being evil with all that data can destroy consumer trust in your product, and the dollars all that data was supposed to be used to pry from wallets will go elsewhere. But the ramifications of having an always-on camera and microphone in your living room, and having that attached to a device that knows what you're watching and is connected to the web, can be far-reaching.

See all, hear all, know all

Xbox One Kinect Sensor

This kind of all-aware technology can offer a massive trove of data on your habits and preferences that a company like Microsoft or Google - or Apple, for that matter - would kill to have their hands on. While Google will use it to better target advertising and maybe sell you some content from the Google Play store, Microsoft and Apple aren't so invested in the advertising game (though they do have fingers dabbling the surface of those pots, so they're not entirely innocent here). Microsoft and Apple are more interested in selling you content - books and movies and television shows and games and music.

Having computers and tablets and smartphones and corresponding software and services ecosystems can go a long way towards building that picture of who you are, what you like, and what you're apt to buy. On a micro scale, Netflix used that kind of data from the viewing habits of their users to construct the House of Cards series to be perfectly-suited to what the average Netflix user is likely to watch, and likely to watch a lot.

They want to take all the data they can to build a picture of you. The end goal for all three is to offer products that better suit your needs.

On the macro scale, Microsoft, Apple, and Google want to take all the data they can to build a picture of you. The end goal for all three is to offer products that better suit your needs, and thus are more likely to remove dollars from your wallet. Google just so happens to be the only one that's really upfront about their ambitions here, with a bravado and willingness to toe up to and even occasionally cross the creepy line in the goal of better serving you. That creepy line act can induce some uncomfortable feelings, however, but that's the price of dealing with Google, it seems.

But the living room has remained elusive to Google and Apple. Google has tried hard and failed to gain a foothold on that beach. Apple treats it like a hobby, offering up just the Apple TV. It's a fine device, but it's merely a portal to content you either already own or have to seek out. Microsoft owns a wide swath of that beach, and with the Xbox One they're going to be able to push deeper into uncharted and unclaimed territory.

If anything, Microsoft has the persistence to pull it off, and things are coming together as far as the Microsoft ecosystem is concerned. Windows 8 may not have been the blockbuster success that Microsoft was hoping for (and Windows RT has been an outright failure thanks to poor messaging and, well, conceiving), and Windows Phone has failed to make a real splash outside of the already tech-aware segment. But Xbox and the living room, Microsoft has succeeded beyond what anybody predicted possible a decade ago when the original black box launched.

Be, know, do

Xbox One Kinect tracking breakdown

Whether or not the push for environmental awareness from Google and Microsoft is a good thing or bad thing is up for debate, and it all comes down to how its used and your own personal comfort levels with such uses. In the end, it's all going to be geared towards making money, either by directly selling you goods, building a service that's so customized to your needs that switching becomes an unfathomable task and insurmountable barrier, or by selling that data to advertisers to offer you the service at no cost.

You've got to pick your poison with the awareness that the company's awareness of you comes entirely with the goal of lining their own pockets. It's capitalism. And through better data comes better products. There's a reason House of Cards has been such a smash hit for the Netflix crowd, and it's because the data showed Netflix exactly what they needed to make it a smash.

Microsoft, Google, and Apple are all driving to build that next smash hit, be it a gaming console that knows everything about your entertainment habits and preferences and can offer up games, movies, and music that suits your tastes; a predictive cloud service with an awareness of where you are, who you're with, and what you're doing so it can make suggestions of where to eat, when to leave to be on time, and what you'll need to know before you get there; or an integrated software ecosystem that shares and manages your data and has your media ready at a tap.

Whether or not this crosses the creepy line is your own personal call. When it comes to these sort of predictive services, Apple is behind the ball, at least with their publicly-announced products. Where Siri has slowly evolved as a personal assistant at your beck and call, Google's Now has become a personal assistant that's eager to answer your question before you've even asked it. Microsoft's voice controls aren't quite as advanced as Siri and their predictive services fall far short of what Google offers. But they've conquered the beach of the living room and are poised to learn more about you than you might ever have realized. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Prosecutors consider using racketeering law against SAC: source

By Emily Flitter

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Prosecutors are considering charging Steven A. Cohen's SAC Capital Advisors as a criminal enterprise engaged in a long pattern of insider trading in stocks, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors may use the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, most commonly associated with prosecutions against the mafia, to move against Cohen's $15 billion hedge fund company, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

While this is one option under consideration, no final decision has been made, the source added. Indeed, the approach carries its own set of risks and would require approval from top Department of Justice officials, legal experts said.

A spokeswoman for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara declined to comment, as did a spokesman for the Justice Department.

SAC Capital has previously denied any wrongdoing and a spokesman for the $15 billion firm declined to comment on the potential use of RICO against it.

Federal prosecutors have used the 40-year-old RICO statute to go after white collar crimes before. In 1989, junk bond king Michael Milken was indicted under RICO, with prosecutors claiming his firm Drexel Burnham Lambert routinely broke securities laws.

Milken, who pleaded guilty to lesser charges, was sentenced to two years in jail and paid $1.1 billion, $200 million of which consisted of criminal fines and $900 million of which settled civil suits.

So far, prosecutors have charged or implicated nine current or former SAC employees in insider trading schemes, including former portfolio manager Mathew Martoma, who was charged last November, and Michael Steinberg, a top Cohen deputy who was arrested and charged in late March. Both Martoma and Steinberg have pleaded not guilty.

Some legal experts say that if prosecutors had enough evidence to charge Cohen with a specific insider trading violation, they would have done so by now. The government has been investigating SAC for about six years.

A RICO prosecution would allow the government an avenue for pursuing criminal charges against SAC Capital as an entity, as well as potentially Cohen as the head of it, they said.

Michael Bowe, a partner at Kasowitz Benson Torres & Friedman in New York, who has done legal battle with Cohen in the past, said the benefit of a RICO case is prosecutors need not prove Cohen "knew the details of any particular act."

Instead, he said, prosecutors would have to prove several instances of insider trading first, and then they would have to prove that Cohen generally knew the practice was occurring.

Bowe represented Canadian insurance company Fairfax Financial in a lawsuit claiming SAC Capital and other hedge funds spread negative rumors between 2003 and 2006 about the company to drive down its stock price. A New Jersey judge eventually threw out the case against SAC Capital and most of the hedge funds.

Speculation about a potential RICO case grew after prosecutors took the rare step last week of trying to compel Cohen to testify before a grand jury. Normally, prosecutors do not subpoena someone who is the subject of the investigation.

"RICO is the ultimate heavy hammer in the government's arsenal," said Steven Crimmins, a partner at K&L Gates in Washington, who used to work for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

He said the government could use RICO charges as leverage in negotiations to get Cohen to plead guilty to lesser charges. A RICO conviction carries the potential for jail time and penalties three times the actual damages.

Through RICO, prosecutors could allege Cohen managed to stay away from specific incidents of insider trading but generally knew his employees were engaging in the practice to the benefit of the firm, legal experts said.

But a RICO prosecution presents its own set of challenges. The use of it as a prosecution strategy needs to be signed off by top officials at the Department of Justice, and some lawyers said it could be a stretch since SAC has nearly 1,000 employees and prosecutors have charged or implicated only nine so far.

Tom Gorman, a partner at Dorsey & Whitney in Washington, said it might make more sense for prosecutors to bring a charge against the hedge fund firm for failing to properly control its employees or a charge for conspiracy to commit insider trading.

The conspiracy charge would help the government stave off the five-year statute of limitations on insider trading cases, a cutoff that is fast approaching in the Steinberg and Martoma matters.

How to Make Your Own DIY Etch A Sketch

It's human nature to immediately pick up and play with an Etch A Sketch whenever you see one. It's in the Hall of Fame of toys (does that exist?) and almost everyone has struggled making anything more than squiggly lines with its knobs. But did you know that you can actually make an Etch A Sketch toy at home? Yeah.

Steve Hoefer of MAKE delves into the history behind the Etch A Sketch and then shows you how to build it in accordance to the patent. Creating the pulley mechanism to control the Etch a Sketch isn't so hard but re-creating the magic screen takes some, well, magic. In any case, it's fascinating to see how one of children's favorite toys (it's the tablet for when we were kids!) works. [MAKE via Mental Floss]

German central bank: Economy to improve 'markedly'

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Germany's central bank expects the country's economy to improve "markedly" in the second quarter ? a development that could boost the wider eurozone as it struggles to get out of recession.

The Bundesbank said Tuesday that Europe's largest economy should expand more robustly after a weak first three months of the year. Germany grew only 0.1 percent in the first quarter in part because cold weather delayed the construction season.

In its monthly report, it said that construction activity will catch up. It also cited "reason to hope" that companies will start investing in machinery and equipment to meet increased demand for goods ? a key stage in any recovery. Industrial orders unexpectedly rose in March by 2.2 percent, instead of declining as analysts had expected.

So far, the report said, corporations continue to hold back on new investment, primarily because of weak demand for products ? even though conditions for financing new investment are "exceptionally favorable." The European Central Bank cut its key interest rate to a record low of 0.5 percent on May 2 and bank lending rates remain low.

The Bundesbank warned, however, that troubles with too much government debt in other euro countries ? Germany's major trading partners ? means "risks remain high." While interest rates are low in Germany, they are higher in countries such as Spain and Italy, where banks are making loans harder to get and charging customers more because their own finances are strained.

Stronger German growth could help the eurozone climb out of its recession. The economy of the 17-country currency union shrank 0.2 percent in the first three months of the year. Growth is suffering as governments cut spending and raise taxes to try to reduce debt. The ECB expects a gradual recovery in the second half of the year.

Official German second-quarter growth figures are due in mid-August, a little over a month before elections in which Chancellor Angela Merkel will seek a third term as chancellor.

Accused Fort Hood shooter draws salary while victims struggle

Accused Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan (REUTERS/Bell County Sheriff's Office/Handout)Nidal Hasan (Bell County Sheriff's Office handout/Reuters)

Soldiers wounded in the Fort Hood shooting spree in November 2009 have a new problem on their hands: getting the shooting's classification changed from "workplace violence" to "combat related."

As reported by Dallas-Fort Worth's NBC 5 Investigates, the injured soldiers are struggling to pay their bills. Because the government doesn't classify the shooting as an act of combat or terror, those injured don't receive additional pay or Purple Hearts.

Receiving the "pay and medical benefits earned by those wounded in combat" would be a big help to these soldiers and their families, reports NBC 5.

Adding to the soldiers' concerns: Major Nidal Hasan, the man charged in the shootings, continues to be paid his salary and has earned more than $278,000 since the shooting, which resulted in 13 deaths and 32 injuries.

The news team reported that the Department of Defense confirmed that Hasan has continued to receive his salary because he has not yet been proved guilty. The salary rule is documented in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. (That Hasan would still receive his pay was first reported in 2011.)

NBC 5 spoke with Retired Army Spc. Logan Burnett and his wife, Torey Burnett, about the "workplace violence" designation. At the time of the shooting, the reservist was about to deploy to Iraq. He was shot three times by the gunman.

Via NBCDFW.com:

"Sickens me. Absolutely sickens me. Workplace violence? I don't even know if I have the words to say," said Burnett.

"They don't need to be treated like this. They don't need to sit and fight every day for this benefit or that,? said Torey Burnett.

As that fight continues, Burnett was stunned to see a letter detailing the more $278,000 Hasan has been paid since his arrest. NBC 5 Investigates received the letter from the Department of Defense in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

"There have been times when my wife and I cannot afford groceries. We cannot afford gas in our car,? Burnett said. ?Literally, times where we ate Ramen noodles for weeks on end. [That Hasan is still earning a paycheck] makes me sick to my stomach,? said Burnett.

Opening arguments for the trial are expected to begin on July 1. Hasan faces the death penalty. He was shot during the attack and is paralyzed from the chest down.

President appoints commission to improve election procedures

President Barack Obama on Tuesday filled out his Presidential Commission on Election Administration, which was created to improve election systems in the United States.

"As I said in my State of the Union Address, when any American, no matter where they live or what their party, is denied that right [to vote] simply because too many obstacles stand in their way, we are betraying our ideals," Obama said in a statement Tuesday. "We have an obligation to ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots without unwarranted obstructions or unnecessary delay."

Obama, who announced that the commission member limit would change from nine to 10, had previously revealed the names of the commissions' bipartisan co-chairs: Bob Bauer, who served as Obama's counsel, and Republican attorney Ben Ginsberg, who worked for Mitt Romney.

The other appointees?a mix that Steve Croley, deputy White House counsel, explained in April would be people who "run elections for a living"?are: Brian Britton, vice president of global park operations and planning at Walt Disney; Joe Echevarria, CEO at Deloitte LLP; Trey Grayson, a Republican who lost to Rand Paul in the 2010 Kentucky Senate primary and who now serves as director of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; Larry Lomax, Clark County registrar in Nevada; Michele Coleman Mayes, vice president, general counsel and secretary for the New York Public Library; Ann McGeehan, assistant general counsel of the Texas County and District Retirement System; Tammy Patrick, federal compliance officer for the Maricopa County Elections Department in Arizona; and Christopher Thomas, Michigan's director of elections.

Per the executive order creating the committee, the commission will examine voting problems highlighted in the 2012 election, specifically potential voting obstacles facing members of the military, overseas voters, voters with disabilities and voters ?with limited English proficiency." The training of polling workers, the operation of polling places and voting machines, ballot simplicity and overseas balloting were listed in the executive order as suggested areas of study.

Croley also said last month that the White House would take a hands-off approach to the commission, allowing it to set the agenda.

The commission is due to submit a report to the president within six months detailing its findings. They will be produced in part through significant outreach to those connected to the country's election systems.

Many voting rights advocates have expressed support for the commission but have reserved judgement on its effectiveness until it begins operations.

Location: Wilmington, Del.
Price: $1,350,000
The Skinny: The one and only Delaware house designed by iconic American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Dudley Spencer House, completed in 1958, was listed last month for $1.35 million. Tucked away on more than 6 acres, amid a dense stand of old-growth trees, the low-slung structure houses three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and ample indoor and outdoor entertaining space. The furnishings, particularly a pair of dated, overstuffed couches, detract from the architecture, but that's nothing that a new owner couldn't address, plus there is still plenty of built-in furniture designed by Wright. That the listing is lacking photos of the kitchen suggests that it is either in original condition, and thus poorly suited to the needs of a modern cook, or that it has been garishly overhauled. Still, the Spencer House is notable as one of Wright's last commissions; he died in April 1959.

3 Reasons You Need to Read Supplement Labels / Nutrition - FitDay

Quality control has been an issue for many dietary supplements due to the fact that the FDA does not approve dietary supplements the same way as prescription medications. There is insufficient evidence and information on the safety and effectiveness of many supplements currently on the market.

All supplement manufacturers must include on the supplement container: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."

Supplements are not conventional foods and have a "Supplement Facts" label instead of a "Nutrition Facts" label.

20_Supplements.jpg

1. Dietary supplements are not approved for safety and effectiveness by the FDA before going on the market. The manufacturer is responsible for the safety of the dietary supplement but there are no mandatory standards for the production of the supplement or the end product--only a sort of honor system. The only time the FDA steps in for safety of supplements is when there is sufficient evidence that the supplement is unsafe.

2. All supplement ingredients are not necessarily listed on the container. Supplement labeling requirements are in place, but are not regulated. Many supplements have been found to have contamination with heavy metals, or to contain much more, less, or none of the substances listed on the container.

20_FDA-teaser.jpg
WILL THIS FDA-APPROVED DRUG ACTUALLY HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?

3. Supplement manufacturers can make claims that the supplement can support health and health issues. Supplement claims and advertisements can be misleading as they're allowed to freely use dietary guidance statements and/or structure-function claims that are not necessarily true or evidence based. Food manufacturers also use these kinds of statements and claims. Supplement manufacturers can use these statements and claims to persuade consumers to use the supplement to treat certain health issues even when the statement on the container specifically says the supplement is not intended to do so. For example, a consumer may use garlic pills to treat their high blood pressure after reading "garlic supports a healthy blood pressure." The required statement on supplement containers specifically says the supplement is not intended to treat a health condition, but the structure-function claim persuades the consumer to do just that.

Studies show that taking supplements when you are not deficient provides little or no benefit and some supplements such as vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C can actually be toxic in large amounts. Your body absorbs most nutrients better if they come from a food source rather than a supplement.

Most popular supplement brands are safe (since they want to stay in business), but take into account the lack of standards and regulation for the supplement industry (other than those voluntarily set by the manufacturer), possible variation of the supplement, extra cost, possible contamination, and interactions with medications or other supplements you may take.

McConnell: ?Culture of intimidation throughout the administration?

Obama addresses the IRS scandal at a news conference. (Getty)

Republican Senators Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell and Rob Portman continued Sunday to press the Obama administration on the Internal Revenue Service scandal that's engulfed the White House.

On CNN's "State of the Union," Paul told Candy Crowley he heard about a "written policy" that encouraged IRS officials to target "those who are critical of the president."

"And when that comes forward, we need to know who wrote the policy and who approved the policy," Paul said.

The Kentucky senator seemed to backtrack when pressed about the existence of yet another controversial document.

"Well, we keep hearing the reports and we have several specifically worded items saying who was being targeted," Paul said. "I don't know if that comes from a policy, but that's what's being reported in the press and reported orally. I haven't seen a policy statement, but I think we need to see that."

Memo or no memo, McConnell said it's clear that political bullying is being cultivated by the Obama White House.

"There is a culture of intimidation throughout the administration," McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "The nanny state is here to tell us all what to do and if you start criticizing, you get targeted."

[Related: The IRS targeted tea party groups. Did liberal groups get better treatment?]

Earlier this month, an inspector general report disclosed that the IRS improperly scrutinized certain conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status. On Sunday's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos,? Portman called for a bipartisan investigation into inspector general's report.

"What we do know is that politics was put ahead of the public interest," Portman said. "And it was done in two of the most sensitive areas of our government."

"So, it seems to me that there's a lot of issues here we need to get bottom of," the Ohio Republican added. "We need to find out what really happened and ensure that we can begin to regain some trust in our government. That's my concern."

Meanwhile, White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer accused the GOP of conducting "fishing expeditions" ahead of next year's midterm elections.

"I think we've seen this playbook from Republicans before," Pfeiffer said on "Meet The Press" Sunday. "What they want to do when they are lacking a positive agenda is try to drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations. We're not going to let that happen."

Obama appears to be weathering the storm, the Associated Press noted. A poll released on Sunday by CNN/ORC International showed President Obama has a 53 percent approval rating, with just 45 percent saying they disapprove.

Tornadoes slam Kansas, Oklahoma

EDMOND, Okla. (AP) ? A powerful storm system rumbled through the Plains and upper Midwest on Sunday, spawning tornadoes that damaged roofs and structures near Oklahoma City and kicked up debris in Wichita, Kan.

There were no immediate reports of injuries caused by the funnel cloud that touched down in the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond before moving off to the northeast, or the one that touched down near Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport late Sunday afternoon.

Forecasters had been warning for days that a big storm may barrel through the region over the weekend, and emergency responders were keeping a close eye on the system in several other states, including Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Texas.

"I knew it was coming," said Randy Grau, who huddled with his wife and two young boys in their Edmond's home's safe room when the tornado hit. He said he peered out his window as the weather worsened and believed he saw a flock of birds heading down the street.

"Then I realized it was swirling debris," Grau said. "That's when we shut the door of the safe room.

"I probably had them in there for 10 minutes."

In Wichita, there were few reports of damage after a storm hit near the airport shortly before 4 p.m. Sedgwick County (Kan.) Emergency Management Director Randy Duncan said officials were "very grateful" that the storm wasn't more severe.

The Storm Prediction Center had been warning about severe weather in the region since last Wednesday and for the past two days had warned there was a moderate risk of severe weather on Sunday.

"They've been calling for this all day," Edmond resident Anita Wright said after riding out the twister in an underground shelter. She and her husband Ed emerged from their hiding place to find uprooted trees, downed limbs and damaged gutters in their home.

In Katie Leathers' backyard, the family's trampoline was tossed through a section of fence and a giant tree uprooted.

"I saw all the trees waving, and that's when I grabbed everyone and got into two closets," Leathers said. "All these trees just snapped."

Over 20 S.African boys die in circumcision rituals: police

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - More than 20 South African boys have died over the past week during coming of age rituals, police said on Thursday, and they blamed botched circumcisions as the likely cause of death.

Northern Mpumalanga province's police department has opened 22 murder cases but no arrests have been made so far, spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

Every year in South Africa, boys aged 10 to 15 years from several of the country's tribal groups are circumcised in traditional "initiation rituals". The ceremonies usually take place over a number of weeks in remote rural areas.

Deaths are often caused by blood loss or infection when circumcisions are poorly performed by traditional practitioners.

Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane this week called the recent deaths "regrettable".

"This has happened to young people who were still at their prime, looking forward to a brighter future where they could still reach their potential," he said in a statement.

(AP) ? The last thing Keegan Bradley wanted to do at the 18th hole with a cozy lead was flirt with the water on the left.

Bradley's drive on his final hole Friday was nowhere close to getting wet. He instead went well right under trees while bogeying No. 18 for the second day in a row, this time closing a 1-under 69 Friday that gave him a three-stroke lead after two rounds.

"I'm going to hit good ones on Saturday and Sunday. I'm due, I don't know when the last time is I hit the fairway," Bradley said. "It's just a matter of commitment. ... For me, I got to take it a little over the edge of the water. So, it's difficult because you know you have that bailout and I got a four-shot lead, so the last thing I wanted to do was plop it in the water."

Bradley bogeyed Nos. 1 and 18 again, just as he did during an opening 60 that set the TPC Four Seasons course record when his only bogeys came in the middle of that round.

In between the bogeys Friday, in tougher conditions, Bradley had another bogey at No. 6, four birdies and several nice par-savers. There was a two-putt from 35 feet after driving into the trees at No. 14 and a blast to 4 feet of the hole from a greenside bunker at No. 15.

"I'm almost more proud of this round than (Thursday) because I didn't feel comfortable all day," Bradley said. "I don't know what it was, I can't put my finger on it, but, you know, I bogeyed the first hole. I was a little uncomfortable and then I settled in and hit some really good shots."

Bradley's 11-under 129 is the lowest 36-hole total at the Nelson since 2001.He got his first PGA Tour victory as a rookie there two years ago, then followed that by winning the PGA Championship later that year and the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational last season.

Tom Gillis, who shot 63 in the first group of the day off the No. 10 tee, and Sang-Moon Bae (66), the 26-year-old South Korean who has 11 international victories but none on the PGA Tour, were tied for second place.

A stroke further back were 2012 PGA Tour rookie of the year John Huh (64), Ryan Palmer (68) and 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel (70). Schwartzel had an opening 63 and was the closest to Bradley after the first round.

"It was a bit up and down out there," said Schwartzel, who had three birdies and three bogeys. "Bit of a frustrating day, but I suppose it's the mix."

Guan Tianlang, the 14-year-old amateur from China, missed the cut with rounds of 70 and 77.

After driving into the rough and then hitting into two bunkers for a double-bogey 6 at No. 12, his third hole Friday, Guan had a 19-foot birdie putt on the following par 3. He then had five consecutive bogeys.

Guan last month made the cut at the Masters and then again in New Orleans, becoming the youngest player to make the cut on the PGA Tour. He said he "probably" would stay in the United States to play more golf, but wasn't specific about where or confirm if he would play in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier June 3.

Defending Nelson champion Jason Dufner, playing with good friend Bradley, had his second consecutive 70 to join 83 players making the cut of even par.

Gillis got rolling with three consecutive birdies, starting with a 13-foot putt at No. 12 before burying a 32-footer on the 180-yard par 3 right after that. His only bogey came at his closing hole, when he three-putted from 12 1/2 feet at the 427-yard ninth hole.

He had played an afternoon round Thursday, when 13 players shot 66 or better in the morning and the only one in the afternoon was Marc Leishman with a 66.

"It was easier, I think the wind was down and I was hoping that we would get a fair shot like they had (Thursday) morning just to see what it would be like," Gillis said. "Definitely, I thought it played better than in the afternoon."

Two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton matched Gillis for the best round Friday, his 63 a nine-stroke improvement from the opening round to put him in a tie for 13th.

Gillis had missed his last five cuts with 12 straight rounds without breaking 70 before his opening 1-under 69 even with bogeys on three of his last four holes.

Asked about what was different this week, Gillis said he was more relaxed after reuniting with his coach.

"Tried to do some things on my own and kind of got lost," Gillis said before explaining their separation. "We had disagreements on some things. ... You talk things out, work things out. People change. I think he was right all along, to be honest with you."

UK court jails 4 Lulzsec hackers for cyberattacks

(AP) ? Four young computer hackers who masterminded cyberattacks on targets from the CIA to Sony Pictures and Rupert Murdoch's News International were sentenced to up to 32 months in prison on Thursday.

The hackers, who were affiliated with the group Lulz Security, had all pleaded guilty to hacking charges. Prosecutors say they also targeted the websites of Britain's National Health Service and the U.K.'s Serious Organized Crime Agency, and posted stolen information including emails and credit card details belonging to millions of people on file-sharing sites like Pirate Bay in 2011.

The group also attacked their targets by launching distributed denial of service attacks, which overwhelm sites with traffic.

Sentencing the four, Judge Deborah Taylor said what they considered a "cyber game" had real consequences.

"You cared nothing for the privacy of others but did everything you could through your computer activities to hide your own identities while seeking publicity," she said.

She gave a 32-month sentence to Ryan Cleary, 21, who pleaded guilty to six charges including hacking into U.S. Air Force computers at the Pentagon.

The others were: Ryan Ackroyd, 26, jailed for 30 months; Jake Davis, 20, jailed for 24 months; and Mustafa Al-Bassam, 18, who was given a suspended 20-month sentence.

Prosecutor Andrew Hadik described the hackers' actions as "cowardly and vindictive" and said they caused companies serious financial and reputational damage.

"Coordinating and carrying out these attacks from the safety of their own bedrooms may have made the group feel detached from the consequences of their actions," Hadik said in a statement. "But to say it was all a bit of fun in no way reflects the reality of their actions."

France's Hollande urges euro zone government, common debt

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande called on Thursday for an economic government in the euro zone that would have its own budget, the right to issue debt, a harmonized tax system and a full-time president.

Speaking at a news conference marking his first year in office, a day after economic data showed France had slipped back into recession, the Socialist leader said he sought to create a full political European Union within two years.

His proposals seemed likely to encounter stiff resistance from Germany, Europe's leading power, which opposes mutualising debt among European states and is reluctant to give the euro zone its own secretariat or create new divisions in the EU, of which 10 countries are not in the 17-nation single currency.

It also comes as Britain's government faces growing domestic pressure to hold a referendum on leaving the bloc.

"My initiative has four points that I am putting to our partners. The first is to create an economic government with the euro zone countries which would meet every month with a real president appointed for a long period and who would be devoted to this task," Hollande said.

"This economic government will debate the main political and economic decisions to be taken by the member states, harmonize tax policy, start the convergence of social policies from the top and launch a battle against tax fraud."

The other planks were:

- an initiative to bring forward planned EU spending to combat youth unemployment, now at record levels across southern Europe;

- a European energy community to coordinate the transition to renewable energy sources;

- "a new stage in fiscal integration with a budget capacity that would be granted to the euro zone and the gradual possibility of raising debt".

Hollande, whose approval rating has fallen further than any previous elected president in his first year, sought to reassure his left-wing electorate that he remained true to his Socialist colors, saying France could keep its generous welfare state provided it was made more efficient.

He expressed full confidence in Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and played down criticism of clashes among his ministers on economic policy, saying there might eventually be a reshuffle but not now.

But he said the current pension system was unsustainable and, ahead of a reform due later this year, said the French would have to work longer in future to receive a full pension.

He stuck to a promise to reverse the rising trend in unemployment by the end of the year, despite widespread skepticism among economists that this can be achieved while the economy remains flat.

He also called for a 10-year public investment plan in the digital sector, the promised energy transition, public health and in big transport infrastructure projects.

Hollande said it was paradoxical that Europe, which remained the world's number one economic power, was regarded "as a sick, declining, doubting continent.

"It is my responsibility as the leader of a founder member of the European Union... to pull Europe out of this torpor which has gripped it, and to reduce people's disenchantment with it."

Nearly 50 injured as Conn. commuter trains collide

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? Two commuter trains serving New York City collided in Connecticut during Friday's evening rush hour, injuring about 50 people, authorities said. There were no reports of fatalities.

The Metro-North Railroad, a commuter line serving the northern suburbs, referred in a news release to a "major derailment" near Fairfield, just outside Bridgeport. It said emergency workers were at the scene of the accident, which came shortly after 6 p.m.

Bill Kaempffer, a spokesman for Bridgeport public safety, told The Associated Press approximately 49 people were injured, including four with serious injuries. About 250 people were on board the two trains, he said.

Photos taken at the scene showed a train car askew on the rails, with its end smashed up and brushing against another train. Amtrak suspended service indefinitely between New York and Boston.

"At this stage, we don't know if this is a mechanical failure, an accident or something deliberate," Fairfield police spokesman Lt. James Perez told the Connecticut Post.

The railroad said a train that departed New York City's Grand Central station en route to New Haven derailed. A westbound train on an adjacent track then struck the derailed train. Some cars on the second train also derailed as a result of the collision.

Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph Gaudett said everybody who needed treatment had been attended to, and authorities were beginning to turn their attention to investigating the cause.

"Everybody seemed pretty calm," he said. "Everybody was thankful they didn't get seriously hurt. They were anxious to get home to their families."

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority operates the Metro-North Railroad, the second-largest commuter railroad in the nation.

The Metro-North main lines ? the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven ? run northward from New York City's Grand Central Terminal into suburban New York and Connecticut.
