The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) called off its four-week teachers' strike Wednesday (July 17th), accepting a 16.8-billion shilling ($193-million) settlement offer from the government, Kenya's Capital FM reported.
KNUT decided to accept the offer, which they had previously rejected, after Deputy President William Ruto reiterated that the government would not offer any more money.
"The deal you have been given by the Teachers Service Commission on commuter allowance cannot be added or reduced. We are operating within a very tight budget," Ruto said.
KNUT acting Secretary General Mudzo Nzili blamed the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) for KNUT's inability to secure a better deal. "We wanted the commuter allowances to be paid at one go but we were unable to get the government to budge because KUPPET had already accepted a three-phase deal," he said.
Nzili directed the striking teachers to return to schools on Thursday at 8 am.
The deal came hours after Secretary of Education Jacob Kaimenyi ordered the indefinite closure of all public schools.
