MONTROSE, Colo.- A deadly traffic accident shut down a Western Slope highway for hours on Tuesday morning.The Colorado State Patrol reports that the crash happened south of downtown Montrose shortly before 8 a.m. An F-250 pickup truck collided with a Montrose County dump truck at the intersection of Highway 550 and Racine Road.
Authorities say the 26-year-old Montrose man driving the pickup died at the scene; his identity has not yet been released. According to the State Patrol, both vehicles were southbound on Highway 550 when the dump truck slowed to make a left turn onto Racine. The pickup didn't slow down in time and slammed into the rear of the dump truck.
Officials say the dump truck driver, Jack Vette of Delta, was transported to a hospital but has since been released. Authorities say it is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
Highway 550 was shut down for more than two hours; it reopened at about 10:15 Tuesday morning.
